Akiva Goldsman Directorial Debut Is 'Man and Wife '

Deadline reports, Akiva Goldsman, who began as a writer and branched into producing, is now taking a turn in the director’s chair.

Goldsman has closed a deal to helm Man and Wife, a 20th Century Fox drama about an assassin who’s hired to kill a family but becomes conflicted when he falls in love with them. Alan McElroy wrote the script and Jason Keller is rewriting. Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark will produce with Ralph Winter. Clark, the former Universal exec, has history with Goldsman on films like Cinderella Man. The film had been a rumored vehicle for Goldsman.

Another forgettable project Goldsman's producing is Jonah Hex, but who cares because his directorial debut actually sounds promising. As much as I despise Fox right now for their two Arnie remakes in development, I think I'll actually be seeing this one.

James Franco Joins Rise Of the Apes

James Franco known mostly for his role in the Spider-Man franchise, and being Seth Rogens stoner buddy in Pineapple Express, will be the first actual person to be cast in  the Planet of The Apes remake Rise of The Apes, which is scheduled to start filming on July 5 for its planned June 24, 2011 release date.

As previously reported the apes in the remake will be CGI, so obviously we know Franco won't be wearing any make-up or fur, in fact he's playing a human, essentially a scientist who is pivotal in the war between the humans and the apes. It's safe to say we can expect a lot more casting announced in the next few weeks leading to the start of filming.

I'm not completely ecstatic about the remake, but at least it sounds a lot more promising then War Monkeys which was announced yesterday.

The Empire Turns 30

"It is a dark time for the Rebellion.  Although the Death Star has been destroyed, Imperial troops have driven the Rebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them across the galaxy.  Evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, a group of freedom fighters led by Luke Skywalker has established a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth.  The evil lord Darth Vader, obsessed with finding young Skywalker, has dispatched thousands of remote probes into the far reaches of space..."

It has now been 30 years since Star Wars fans read that opening crawl for the first time.  Thirty years since we first heard John Williams' "Imperial March," watched a rebel base get destroyed by an army of AT-ATs, met Yoda, Boba Fett, and Lando Calrissian, found out what the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field were, heard Harrison Ford's most famous ad-lib, and watched Luke Skywalker go from a Death Star-destroying hero to a Wampa-clobbered, Jedi-in-training who loses a hand and finds out that Darth Vader is his father just 10 minutes before the movie's end credits rolled.

May 21, 1980 was the day The Empire Strikes Back was released in theaters, and is still considered by many fans today to be one of the rare sequels that was even better than the original film.  Which is particularly impressive, considering that Star Wars was a cultural phenomenon when it was released in 1977.

A special anniversary screening of Empire was held at the Arclight Cinema in Los Angeles last night as part of Lucasfilm's year-long Empire Gives Back initiative, which will be holding screenings of the movie for various charities throughout the year (unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any events planned for us New York-area fans).  Last night's screening, which raised over $40,000 for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, was attended by Empire stars Harrison Ford, Billy Dee Williams, Peter Mayhew (no relation!), the prequel trilogy's Obi-Wan, Ewan McGregor, as well as several of the voice actors from the Clone Wars animated series.  Other attendees included Jon Favreau and Christopher Nolan.

Harrison Ford spoke highly of the film, “It was the only Star Wars movie I paid to see,” he told Wired. “I enjoyed it that much and went back to see it more than once.”

Ford also participated in a Q&A session with the audience, where he shared some well-known anecdotes about how Han Solo's infamous "I know" line came about, as well as how he arrived on the Norweigan Hoth set in a snowplow and filmed all of the outdoor scenes just steps away from the hotel due to the severe weather conditions.

He also praised his Wookie co-star, Peter Mayhew (who celebrated his 66th birthday yesterday), calling him "the hardest working man in show business at the time," since he not only had to spend long hours in that Chewbacca costume, he actually didn't fit in the Millenium Falcon cockpit set.

On why Empire Strikes Back is still so popular after 30 years, Ford answered in typical fashion, "I don't know that I understood it very well, and I don't know that I understand it yet. The invention of it is obvious; even after 30 years, the originality of it was very striking for the time. The mythology of it is what it works as much as anything else, and I think George tapped into a psychic vein that made the whole thing work."

It certainly did work, I think that's one thing all Star Wars fans can agree on.

Even if I don't get to see an anniversary screening of Empire (come on, Lucasfilm, show us some love!), I was lucky enough to have gotten to see it in theaters first time around in 1980, when I was only 6 years old.  I first saw Star Wars when I was 3, and had been obsessed with it ever since, so much so that when there was a Darth Vader appearance at our local mall, I not only believed my dad when he told me Vader's TIE fighter was in the parking lot, I claimed for weeks afterwards that I had actually seen the damn thing out there.

Empire was probably a little much for a 6-year-old, especially one who was so freaked out by Darth Vader that I wouldn't keep his action figure in my room with me at night.  Let's face it, the only other live-action movie I'd seen other than Star Wars by 1980 had starred The Muppets.  The good guys don't lose limbs or get beaten by the bad guys in movies you see when you're just out of kindergarten.

But that is definitely what made Empire so memorable, even 30 years later.  I still remember being stunned when Darth Vader told Luke "I am your father," and spending the next three years refusing to believe it was true.  We had no internet to give away the entire script to the next film years in advance, so we didn't get to find out what happened next until we actually got to see the next movie (which thanks to a surprise from my mom, I got to see on opening day in 1983).

It's something movies can't really get away with now, and it's a shame that's been lost.

As much as people these days like to complain how the prequel trilogy 'destroyed' their childhood, I find looking back on Empire Strikes Back now that my childhood memories of Star Wars are still very much intact.  And while I'm definitely feeling a little old now that two of my favorite movies have celebrated 30th anniversaries (and when Jedi gets there I'll officially feel older than Yoda), I'm glad I got to see them in the theater the first time around.

Happy Anniversary, Empire!  And may the Force continue to be with it for the next 30 years.

New Trailer 'Megamind'

DreamWorks Animation has revealed the new trailer for Megamind, coming to 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on November 5th. The animated supervillain comedy is voiced by Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey and Jonah Hill. You can check out the trailer below the synopsis:

When super villain Megamind (Ferrell) defeats his archrival Metro Man (Pitt), the world should be his oyster. But instead, Megamind falls into total despair. It turns out that life without a rival is life without a point for him. So, he creates a new superhero rival, Titan (Hill). Unfortunately, the new hero wants to be a super villain, too. Caught in the middle, star reporter Roxanne Ritchi (Fey) asks the tough questions: Who can we turn to? Who has what it takes to stand up to this menace? Who will defend the innocent? Megamind! That's who.

Normally I'm not a huge fan of Ferrell, but every once in a while he does something actually funny or interesting, like this. After seeing Shrek in 3D, and seeing just how much flying and awesome shit there is in this trailer, I can't wait to see it, and i'll probably see it in 3D.

The Looney Tunes Are Back!

If your like me you grew up watching Looney Tunes, and the cartoons our kids watch now just don't do it for you like bugs bunny or road runner once did. If I asked my six year old daughter who Bugs Bunny was, she'd say is he friends with Dora? Well Warner Bros has plans to change that very soon.

A new 26-episode half-hour series, “The Looney Tunes Show,” is headed toward Cartoon Network in the fall and will star Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck as odd-couple roommates in a contemporary cul-de-sac. Yosemite Sam, Tweety Bird, Sylvester, Marvin the Martian and Porky Pig are their neighbors.

Meanwhile, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote are going back to work in movie theaters in a series of 3-D shorts. The first of these shorts — Warner has approved three, and three more are in development — will play ahead of the movie “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore,” which arrives in theaters July 30.

More recently, big plans for an online Looney Tunes world fizzled amid the economic downturn. “The Loonatics Unleashed,” another television series, was yet another sprucing-up effort from 2005 that introduced futuristic-looking, anime-influenced versions of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, was a wipeout. Many parents hated the Loonatics, which had mohawks and menacing eyes, and the series was canceled in 2007.

Big-screen resuscitation efforts have not fared much better. “Space Jam,” a mix of animation and live action starring Michael Jordan, turned a profit back in 1996. But the most recent picture, the 2003 animation-live-action hybrid “Looney Tunes: Back in Action,” left North American audiences holding their noses. The movie, with Brendan Fraser, cost an estimated $95 million and sold $25 million in tickets in North America, according to Box Office Mojo and adjusting for inflation.

Sales of Looney Tunes merchandise have been sliding for about eight years, but still ring up over $1 billion annually on a global basis via 1,000 licensees. (To compare, Winnie the Pooh generates about $5 billion annually for Disney.) The hope is that “The Looney Tunes Show,” supported by the theatrical shorts, will fuel new product lines.

I wish I actually wanted to see Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, I'd love to see my favorite Tunes back up on the big screen. I know one thing for sure, once the show airs there'll be a little less Dora and Mickey Mouse in my house, and a lot more "what's up Doc".

Gemma Arterton Replacing Megan Fox In Transformers 3?

As we reported earlier today Megan Fox has essentially been fired from Transformers 3 for making ridiculous remarks about director Michael Bay.

Well apparently Bay has wasted no time at all in finding her replacement. The Wrap reports the film makers have already met with Brooklyn Decker, Miranda Kerr and Bar Rafaeli to play the new female lead.

But according to their sources Prince of Persia star Gemma Arterton is the front-runner to replace Megan Fox. An individual close to the casting process says the actress has already had discussions with Bay about the coveted role.

Arterton remains the possibility who makes the most sense, as she plays Jake Gyllenhaal's love interest in "Prince of Persia" and is no stranger to Hollywood blockbusters, having also starred in "Clash of the Titans" and "Quantum of Solace."

While she is very attractive, some will still argue she is no where near Megan Fox' "sex symbol" status. I say, who cares she can actually act, unlike Fox who was really only good for looking at.

Box Office Predictions May 21-23

New in theaters this weekend is Shrek Forever After, expected to be the new champ, and MacGruber, not expected to do much at all. I just saw Shrek and was very happy with the end result, you can read my review HERE. As for MacGruber, I'm not expecting much and I have very little to say about it.

Iron Man 2 will finally take it's fall from the number one spot to number 2 this weekend, followed by Robin Hood in third.

Next week is the opening of Sex and The City 2, being that it's rated R I'm not sure it will beat out the family friendly Shrek in its second weekend. Never the less check back this time next week for my official review.

2. Iron Man 2 (Marvel/Paramount) - $23.0 million

Megan Fox Won't Be In Transformers 3!

Earlier this month, Megan Fox was spotted doing previz shots for Transformers 3, but now Variety is reporting that she will not appear as Mikaela in the third installment after all.

Is anyone really that suprised by this news?  I know I'm not.

In an interview last year with Wonderland Magazine Fox had the following to say about Transformers director Michael Bay:

"God, I really wish I could go loose on this one. He's like Napoleon and he wants to create this insane, infamous mad-man reputation. He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is. So he's a nightmare to work for".

"Shia and I almost die when we make a Transformers movie. He has you do some really insane things that insurance would never let you do."

Paramount Pictures reportedly decided not to pick up her option as the studio and director Michael Bay want to take the story line in another direction and plan to cast another actress as the love interest for Sam Witwicky, played by Shia LaBeouf.

The trade says the decision was unrelated to the September interview. Right, and we'll pretend to believe that.

With Fox getting the axe and dropping the racist robots from the sequel, Transformers 3 just might be headed in the right direction.

The third installment is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2011.

Conan O’Brien Returns November 8

The short lived Tonight Show host has recently been doing a comedy tour called "The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour". But now comes news we've all been waiting for:  TBS has just announced that Conan’s new show will premiere on the station on November 8, 2010 at 11 PM. It will be followed by Lopez Tonight.

This last year has been quite the shit show for COCO. After losing the Tonight Show to Ultra Douche Bag Jay Leno, and a ridiculous legal battle with NBC, which ended with an agreement stating that he could not publicly disparage NBC nor appear on television for about six months, O’Brien is finally ready to make the return to late night.

Blake Lively Talks Green Lantern

Blake Lively is featured in the June issue of Vogue magazine and the actress talked about her role in Green Lantern:

The adventure begins in the Vogue offices when I am bidden to look at the fittings shots of Blake Lively, which reveal a body sublimely toned for her upcoming role as Carol Ferris (a.k.a. ultravillain Star Sapphire) in Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, based on the DC Comics superhero introduced in 1940. "All I want is to be a hero to my nephews and nieces," Lively says, laughing. "I'm going to be the coolest aunt ever."

Lively has been rehearsing with a stunt coordinator who works on the Bond movies and with gymnastic acrobats from Cirque du Soleil. "Our director likes it real—the fights close and dirty," she explains, and for added veracity aerial stunts are being filmed in the rig created for The Matrix. "I'm 40 feet in the air, spiraling around. That's the best workout you can ever do because it's all core," she tells me. "You do that for ten minutes and you should see your body the next day! It's so exhilarating, so thrilling—and nauseating," she adds, all of which promises to stand her in good stead for the surf experience to come.

I haven't actually read any Green Lantern comics before, but from the sounds of her comments she will be the villain Star Sapphire as well, at least at some point in the film.

Green Lantern opens every June 17, 2011.
