Movie Moan TV - 'El Cid' (1961)

It's an almost double length show this week and it's only appropriate since we finally tackle one of cinema's greatest epic films 'El Cid'.

Join us as Jamie Williams, Queen Kristina and Phil Gee are unable to detach themselves from the conditioning of having been brought up on shitty 80's comedy movies and the horrible repercussions that has on one of cinema's greatest endings.

New X-Men: First Class Posters Beaten with the Ugly Stick

Look, everyone knew X-Men: First Class was going to be a tough sell.

The last two installments weren't well-received, and this will be the first one without Hugh Jackman charming the pants off the press talking about how much wicked-shape he got in. Then there's the whole 1960s-era theme, which I can't imagine is a big turn-on for the masses like it is for, say, people like me. I also like the director/producer duo of Matthew Vaughn and Bryan Singer behind the camera, and the international posters from a few weeks back looked great.

But these latest posters (courtesy of the X-Men Movies Facebook account) are ugly. As in "Got their asses beat with an ugly stick and totally done over 'Ned Beatty in Deliverance' style" ugly.

New "Cars 2" Trailer

Cars has always been the whipping boy of Pixar's thus-far perfect stream of box office hits, but let's face it:  the kids love it.  In fact, I like Cars too.  Yes, it was predictable as hell, but it was sweet and funny, the animation was beautiful and I loved the soundtrack.  Seriously, if Cars is Pixar's "worst," I'll take that any day over most of the animated crap hitting theaters the rest of the year.

So like it or not, we're getting a Cars 2 this summer.  You can check the new trailer below.  And as the aunt to a small army of nephews/cousins all under the age of 9, I can already tell they're going to love the hell out of this, which will be worth the price of admission alone.  So deal with it, Cars-haters.

Cars 2, along with the new short Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation, opens in theaters on June 24th.

Fast Five Trailer

Never been my cup of coffee, but people really, really like the Fast & the Furious series.

So I'm sure they'll be delighted to see Yahoo! Movies has the trailer for the latest, Fast Five online. Besides Dwayne Johnson rocking that van-dyke, it looks like more of the same: sleek cars, hot women and more bromantic-hijacks between Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.

Obviously I won't be in attendance when this drops on April 29. But it's safe to say a shitload of others will be. Seriously, this could wind eating Thor's business (which opens the following weekend and officially kick-starts the 2011 summer film season) and will no doubt massacre Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.

The House From "Up" Really Exists!

As I have mentioned many a time during my articles, I am a sucker for those CG Animated features. I love every one of them big or small. "UP" is one of my favorites out of the plethora of them which have dropped in theaters, a movie featuring a house floating with the help of a large number of balloons. How can you beat that. Apparently National Geographic can, because they did it for real.

An episode of the upcoming new Fall show titled "How Hard Can It Be" will explore whether or not it is actually possible to use balloons to propel a house into the stratosphere. From the photos, it is! On March 5th a group featuring two balloon pilots, scientists, and engineers used 300 8' weather balloons in a myriad of colors to force a 16 x 16 inch house into the sky.

Check out the rest of the pictures at My Modern Met and enjoy the video below.

"Footprints" Opening April 15, 2011 In NYC & LA

Award-winning writer Steven Peros, author of the play and screenplay for The Cat’s Meow (directed by Peter Bogdanovich) and twice-published Samuel French playwright, comes FOOTPRINTS, a haunting, hopeful and unforgettable mystery. The film chronicles a young woman’s journey of discovery in one day, from sunrise to sunset.

Sybil Temtchine (Ten Benny, Passion of Ayn Rand) stars as a young woman who wakes up at dawn on the footprints and handprints of the famed Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood with no idea who she or how she got there.  Upon awakening, she wonders if she isn’t, in fact, lost in a dream.  And perhaps she is…

Regardless of whether she is dreaming or wide awake, Our Gal sets off on her journey, from one person to the next, one famous locale after the other. Among the Hollywood fringe denizens with whom she comes into contact are a pair of tour guides (Charley Rossman, John Brickner), two super hero impersonators (Catherine Bruhier, Riley Weston), a Scientology auditor (Joe Roseto), and a memorabilia shop owner (R.J. Cantu). She also finds herself disquietingly followed by a Stranger (Kirk Bovill) who may be real or a figment of her unsteady imagination.

Although her feet only fleetingly leave Hollywood Boulevard, by sundown Our Gal will piece together the revelatory truth about her existence and the reason for her awakening, forcing her to make choices that will literally result in either her life… or death.

In their heart-breaking portrayals of two veterans of the boulevard and all it represents, FOOTPRINTS marks the return to the big screen of The Searchers’ Pippa Scott and H. M. Wynant (The Twilight Zone, Sam Fuller’s Run of the Arrow, Budd Boetticher’s Decision at Sundown).

At the Mountains of Madness is No More

At the Mountains of Madness, long-time dream project of acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, is dead.

This comes after a string of news over the past 24 hours that began with claims of an official June start-date on the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation and signing of Tom Cruise to star, as per I09, concluding with confirmation from both Collider and director del Toro himself to the Criterion Cast pronouncing it's death.

Here lies the aftermath of that decision. We're hearing loud cries of Universal being "chicken-shitted" for rejecting a project large in ambition, talent (along with del Toro and possibly Cruise, James Cameron was on-board to produce) and, in what ultimately proved to be its killing stroke, cost.

No need of reiterating what Drew McWeeny said other than how dead-on he is. That studio has taken financial and creative risks the last couple of years that didn't pan out on their bottom line, and now their new ownership under Comcast we can expect next-to-none of that. It's what I say about Paramount fast-tracking that G.I. Joe sequel. Yeah, you might not like "the Justin Bieber guy" directing. But under these extraordinary circumstances, there wouldn’t be another G.I. Joe to look forward to next August. Be grateful you're getting that.

Alas it's all "Fuck so-and-so for not doing exactly what I want them to!" reactions from the typically childish fan-community. Such mentality also shows the overall lack-of-thinking from fandom who takes everything at face value, refuse to dissect and process information to form one’s own opinion and never willing to be open-minded when "outside the box" filmmakers or actors are chosen for big properties because they don't fit their pre-conceived notions (i.e. "So-and-so looks the part so that makes them the perfect choice!") Thinking doesn’t hurt, children.

The general movie-going-public outnumbers hardcore fans, 100-to-1 if not more. It's what those people (whom I often refer to as "John & Jane Doe Movie-Goer") choose to spend their coin to see who studios typically pay attention to, as they should, and there's zero evidence to suggest said people would pay to see something like At the Mountains of Madness. After a string of costly-failures, Universal just plain can't afford to that another risk like that.

As for Mr. del Toro, we all feel bad for him, but he will move on. The man has talent, and as we've heard in the past practically had to fight off big offers with a stick over the years; Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, a Wizard of Oz project at Legendary Pictures, Superman: The Man of Steel and The Hobbit which as we all know he actually said "Yes" and two years working on before understandably bowing when it appeared a real start-date wasn’t in sight.

It appears that his next project will indeed be Pacific Rim first broken by Latino Review, thus continuing his love for big-screen monsters. Good for him. Perhaps with a couple of commercial hits under his belt, he’ll gain the clout to commander the budget and creative freedom required for At Mountains of Madness.

That time just isn't now.

Two More "Green Lantern" Images

I really don't consider this newsworthy but it is still worth a look. In addition to the interview with Ryan Reynolds, Empire has two new photos from the upcoming space adventure. We get Hal and Carol having drinks at a bar and another of Hal alone looking hesitant to pace the ring on his finger. It's okay Hal, that one doesn't mean you're getting married.
