    Movie Moan: Honestly? PIGS!

    That's how George Lucas pitched the infamous pig-transformation scene from the "classic" Willow. At least according to Jamie.

    On this week's podcast, Phil eviscerates Knight & Day and Jamie reviews The Other Guys. In a weak weeks' worth of news, the guys discuss Jon Favreau and Disney being on the outs, Quentin Tarantino rumored to be directing The Shadow, Stephen Sommers helming the G.I. Joe sequel, Liam Neeson exits Lincoln and Ridley Scot attached to Forever War.

    All of that plus the passing of the great Tom Mankiewicz, Phil catching up with video-games, Yogi-Bear and this week's debate on the shitty state of movie-posters.

    I saw Knight and Day friday night...

    I don't think I disliked it as much as you, phil, but we have definitely come to a point (and be we, I mean the world) where a film based on both Cruise's and Diaz' charisma just isn't enough. I will disagree with you to a certain extent, when it comes to the Cruise and Diaz chemistry, as they do sort of have it (though I didn't quite buy the sexiness of it all).

    the problem is, you can write the outline for the entire film on the back of your cinema stub in the dark... while the trailers are still running! Also, those two actors are really starting to show their age, especially (and I feel cruel for saying this) Diaz (though I certainly wouldn't kick her out of bed for farting). Not that good, but I must say, I liked it more than The A Team. I'd give it 5 out of 10.

    Can't believe they are actually considering a G.I Joe sequel! If it made a profit, then it was pretty modest in the grand scheme of things. I know it tanked in the U.K, because no one really grew up with the animated show, here.

    A Welshman as Lincoln? Hmmm...

    I'll get back to you on the posters lark...

    PARTY ON, DUDES!

    Your debate about movie posters reminded me of an article Devin from CHUD posted. It's an interesting read about modern movie posters.

    An eclectic bunch, I's sure you'll agree? I tried to mix up old and new in both catagories.

    And just as a matter of interest... who got paid to write the blur on the back of this video?!?!

    I wonder how many people rented that tape, circa 1987?

    And this just scared the fucking crap out of me as a kid!

    @Lighthouse

    Ha ha, Superman III is an interesting choice but surely you picked up because of what it represents rather than because it is an ugly looking poster. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    @Welshfilmbuff

    You're definately talking my language bringing up Tim Curry's Lord of Darkness. Him and Max Headroom populated all of my nightmares as a kid. What we didn't get to talk about in the debate is the magic I used to feel strolling down the aisles of my local video store and being presented with a feast of titles with the most beautifully designed cover art. It wouldn't matter what quality of film we were talking about, the cover would catch you're eye and you would pick it up. Some images would be burned into your brain for life. I would say the one that creeped me out more than any other would be:

    I thought I was the only one who was scared of Max Headroom. The fact that he looked real yet unreal, was I think, the main reason he was creepy...

    Remember these ads? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REU8c0R0Gh0 It was "round the back of the sofa, time" whenever those came on...

    Heh, my mam went out with somebody in the 90's who owned "Vamp" on video (with a different cover) He was always trying to get me to watch it, but I never would. Even to the average 15 year old, Grace Jones is far too scary!

    This is another video cover I remember well from my childhood http://www.best-horror-movies.com/image-files/ghoulies-horror-movie-poster.jpg

    To this day, I still haven't seen the film, but I recently heard that there isn't even a scene like it in the film! They got so many complaints about it, that they had to include one for the sequel.

    @Phil
    I'll just say that I react very negatively to looking at the Superman III poster.

    08-9-2010 | Unregistered CommenterLighthouse

    I agree with you guys I wish there were more great movie posters. I'm actually disappointed that Liam Neeson is not going to be Lincoln. It's all Spielberg's fault! I'm up for anything Tarantino. This whole Favreau/Marvel is total crap. The Avengers movie is in danger. Hmm a Siskel and Ebert movie would have never lived up to it's hype anyway. You guys better talk about the last episode of At The Movies next week.

    Just saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World today. You know, even summer's where the movies are good rarely have two masterpieces. Inception and Scott Pilgrim, in my humble opinion, are both masterpieces. Along with the very, very good Toy Story 3, and the pretty fun A-Team, this summer didn't turn out so bad after all.
