Bruce Willis to star in Looper

Rian Johnson's debut movie was Brick starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, it was a high school set noir and it was pretty brilliant, if you haven't seen it I suggest you pick it up. He followed that with the Brothers Bloom, a quirky comedy caper movie that seemed to take forever to get released and then when it did it was gone as quickly as it arrived, despite getting decent reviews.

Now he is gearing up for his third movie which is set to be a sci fi action film called Looper, it was announced the other week that Joseph Gordon Levitt would be starring in it and now comes news from Deadline.com that action icon Bruce Willis will also be coming aboard.

EXCLUSIVE: Bruce Willis is joining the cast of Looper, a science fiction time travel tale that reunites the Brick team of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and writer/director Rian Johnson. The Terminator-esque action film has a clever premise. Loopers are hit men whose victims are sent back in time from the future to be executed. The Loopers bump them off in the present, so there is no trace of a crime in the future. I'm told that Willis and Gordon-Levitt will play the same character, in those different time frames. That ploy is also being used in Men in Black 3, with Josh Brolin playing the younger version of Tommy Lee Jones's Agent Kay. CAA is repping North American rights, and FilmNation Entertainment is repping it. Insiders said it is not being shopped at this fest. But buyers are all over it.

Sci Fi is hitting a purple patch right now with Avatar and Star Trek hitting big last year and Moon garnering huge critical praise, then this summer will see Inception and Source Code (directed by Moon director Duncan Jones) is tipped to big by those that have read the script, and now we have Looper which quite frankly sounds like it may top the lot. I've been a fan of Willis since I was a kid and JGL is one of the most talented young actors working today, this combined with an interesting director and killer hook put Looper right up top of my anticipation list.

    The A Team character spots

As a child of the 80's the A Team is one of the shows I grew up on and will always have a soft spot for, so far Joe Carnahan's modern movie take seems to hit all the right touchstones and I think it will turn out to be a fun slice of summer action, which in truth is all you can ask for from an A Team movie.

Four Character TV spots have been released and you can check them out below, The A Team opens on June 11th.

Next fast & the furious to get rocked!

Fast and the Furious, no one would have expected it to spawn 4 sequels when it was released back in 2001 but here we are on the cusp of "Fast Five"......Yes the titles aren't getting better any time soon.

Anyway we know that Paul Walker and Vin Dieserl are returning because...well lets face it not much else they do would actually be deemed a hit, so this is their bread and butter baby! however the big news is on who might be joining them in the 5th installement. Deadline New York has the scoop!

Is a match-up between action icons Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel in the works for the next installment of The Fast and the Furious? Sources tell me it’s not a done deal but that Johnson is eyeing a starring role in Fast & Furious 5.  He's already is driving mode on the CBS Films revenge drama Faster, and here, it appears Johnson's character will be on the right side of the law.  Fast & Furious 4 reinvigorated the franchise with a $155M domestic haul.

They can call him Dwayne all they want be he'll always be The Rock to me jabronis! I am not sure if this is a step back for The Rock after Get Smart and the forthcoming The Other Guys, I see it more as a step sideways and a chance to outshine Vinnie D and show the world who the daddy is when it comes to the quest for Arnie and Sly's one liner spouting muscly throne.

    Brad Bird takes Mission Impossible

It was announced earlier today that Mission Impossible IV was moving dates to December 16th 2011, now comes news direct from Tom Cruise via Empire, that Brad Bird is definitely directing the 4th installment in the franchise.

Since Tom Cruise decided to accept another fiendishly-difficult-but-let’s-face-it-not-quite-Impossible-or-there-would-be-no-movie Mission, there’s been speculation as to who would direct the fourth outing in his spy series.

Rumour suggested Brad Bird... Well, it's no longer rumour: it’s Brad Bird.

As previously reported, Cruise – who is producing with part three’s creator, JJ Abrams – was considering both Bird and Blighty’s own Edgar Wright, but Mission: Impossible IV is officially going to The Incredibles writer/director.

Wright, who is still tied up with post-production on his hotly anticipated comic-book adaptation Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, is still on Cruise’s must-work-with list, though.

“I dig Edgar. Very nice guy, very smart, very talented, I’d really like to do something with him,” said Cruise, talking to Empire recently in Los Angeles. “I met Edgar on the set of Mission 3. Simon Pegg and those guys are hilarious. I love Shaun Of The Dead. It’s amazing. But we’re working with Brad right now. I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it but everything’s signed... Brad is doing it.”

The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille – Brad is enormously talented and JJ and I are having a blast, cranking away,” Cruise continued. “We’re having a lot of fun. I like working with people I just love hanging out with. You get to hang out and laugh and talk stories and movies and technology: what are we going to do?”

Bird is a great stryteller with an exuberant imagination, this of course will be his first live action outing however I have faith he will knock it out of the park.

    Inception IMAX POster

Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated Inception is due to get a full trailer with the release of Iron Man 2, in fact if I have my times right many US folks will be enjoying it round about now.

For the rest of us Yahoo Movies has gotten hold of the fantastic IMAX poster. The posters so far have drawn criticism from some for being too similar to the TDK posters but this one is fantastic and represents the gravity defying nature of the film as seen in the prior two teasers.

JJ Abrams’ Super 8 Teaser Trailer Description

The net has been buzzing all week with news that a secret trailer for a new JJ Abrams movie will be shown with Iron Man 2 screenings this Friday, well /Film now has a detailed description of the trailer and man does it sound great. The film is called Super 8 and is the project announced a couple of weeks ago that will see JJ using Steven Spielberg as an inspiration, Spielberg for his part is a producer.

    Check the description out below.

The trailer lasts about one minute and a half.

It begins with the Green MPAA screen, followed by the Paramount Pictures logo. No Bad Robot at the header.

A train rushes by the screen. We notice that it has lots of cargo.

Text comes on the screen: “In 1979, The U.S. Air Force Closed A Section of AREA 51.”

We see the railroad crossing light blinking and ringing as the camera pans up we see some sort of light moving in the background. What is it? A UFO?

More Text: “All The Materials Were To Be Transported To A Secure Facility In Ohio.”

No, it appears to be the headlights of a yellow 1970’s truck, which skids in a 180 degree motion, and suddenly pulls onto the tracks.

Point of view of the truck heading into the light.

Black screen and white text: “From Producer Steve Spielberg”

We see the truck explode as it hits the train.

Then… the cargo train is heading towards the car explosion - BAM. It is wrecked, thrown from the tracks like a wild snake. The flaming metal body flipping towards the camera. Cars flying through the air. It is INTENSE.

Another black screen and the text: “And Director JJ Abrams”

The camera really slowly moves in on the wrecked pieces of the train, most of which is now just scrap metal. At least one car remains intact.

Black screen, white test: “Next Summer”

    We see some sparks.

Black screen, white text: “It Arrives”

We pull up on one of the train cars with a US Airforce logo. The wheel on the door begins to spin out of control as we pull in closer. The wall of the door begins to bend like some huge force is punching it from the inside.

Cut to one second of a close up of an 8mm camera lens.

Cut to black. White text: “Super 8″

The credits at the end were pretty bare.

Paramount Pictures Presents, An Amblin Entertainment/Bad Robot Production

    “Super 8″

PRoduced By Steve Spielberg JJ Abrams Bryan Burk

Written and Directed by JJ Abrams

And the bottom featured the Amblin Entertainment, Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures Logo.

It definitely feels like a late 1970’s Spielberg film, think Close Encounters of a Third Kind. I’m excited to see what the actual movie is about.

    The Killer Inside Me Trailer

Michael Winterbottom's adaption of Jim Thompson's searing noir. The film played to mixed receptions on the festival circuit and was deemed too nasty and gratuitous by some, those though who are fans of the book felt it was a faithful adaption.

The trailer gives very little away but indicates another fine performance from Casey Affleck in the lead role of the psychotic sheriff, Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson both get to step out of the formulaic rom com mode both have been in and Alba in particular has a strong role by all accounts.

The film clearly is dark and unforgiving and not for everyone, however for those with the stomach it looks like a promising thriller and bleak character study. Check the trailer out below to see which category you are in.

Steven Spielberg to Direct War Horse

Steven Spielberg has been circling several projects for a while now trying to chhose his his next, from his long in gestation Lincoln biopic to an adaption of Michael Crichton's last novel Pirate Latitudes, at one point even a remake of Harvey was on the cards, but now he has finally chosen according to Variety.

Steven Spielberg has selected his next directing job: World War I epic "War Horse."

Disney and DreamWorks will release the film Aug. 10, 2011.

"War Horse" is based on Michael Morpurgo's novel of the same name, as well as a stage adaptation. Spielberg is producing with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Revel Guest. Scribes Lee Hall and Richard Curtis are penning the adapted script.

Set against the sweeping backdrop of the Great War, storyline charts the extraordinary friendship between a boy and a horse who are separated but whose fates continue to intertwine over the course of WWI.

Here's a synopsis of the book from Amazon.

From master storyteller, Michael Morpurgo comes an incredibly moving story about one horse's experience in the deadly chaos of the first world war. In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the frontline. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him.

This sounds like a return to his 80's and early 90's roots to me, a story with a certain innocence and hope to it, personally I think Spielberg has made a wise choice here. Granted it could turn out cheesy but that is the risk often taken with material that aspires to be inspirational, however given the glowing reviews of the book it seems Spielberg has got the material to work with that will allow him to tread on the right side of that line.
