The Hobbit 3 Goes There & Back Again to Christmas 2014

Don't act surprised. This was always going to happen.

The Hobbit: There & Back Again is migrating away from July 18, 2014 (Same date as X-Men: Days of Future Past – where the mutants would have clobbered the dwarfs) and headed to December 17, 2014. The summer slot never made sense. This isn't Harry Potter where you can move it wherever you so please and still earn $290 million on average. The Lord of the Rings flicks belong in Christmas.

This always felt like a place-holder 'till the studio found something else, like Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, Transcendence or even possibly move Godzilla. Well on the latter, that's if Pacific Rim registers.

But back to Bilbo, it allows Peter Jackson his usual time for reshoots (New round of filming for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hasn't yet begun) and simultaneously working on those Extended Edition DVD/Blu-Rays.

Trailer for Aaron Eckhart Actioner 'Erased'

The first - and likely only - trailer is now online for the Aaron Eckhart Taken-like flick, Erased (formerly called The Expatriate) which has actually already been released in the U.K. under that name.

For those unfamiliar, this film was shot nearly two years ago which is obviously never a good sign (it is being released in May so it has a chance to make some money).

Erased tells the story of a former CIA agent who moves to Belgium with his 15 year-old daughter to start a new life, though soon learns things aren't what they seem as an international conspiracy has targeted himself and his daughter for assassination.

The film looks good, but I can't help but think its original title should have been left alone.  I may be in the minority, but I first thought it was a sequel to the Arnold Schwarzenegger film, Eraser, when I caught glimpse.

Anyway, the trailer and synopsis are below:

When ex-CIA agent Ben Logan discovers that he and his daughter have been marked for termination as part of a wide-reaching international conspiracy, a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse ensues as Logan tries to outsmart his hunters and uncover the truth.

Erased opens in theaters May 10th.

Gary Oldman Leading Mankind in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

The ways of the character actor...

You're so convincing in a role, casting agents only want you for "another one of those" from then onward. Back in the 90s, it was impossible to not see Gary Oldman playing someone villainous or merely... not right. Not sure where that started (Bram Stoker's Dracula, perhaps?) but Oldman was living it up, and cashing plenty of paychecks, as the heavy. Hey, work is work.

And like the snap of a finger, one role playing the polar opposite and guess what? Suddenly after Batman Begins, Oldman was playing the good guy. True, he was Sirius Black first. But there was still that lingering villainy to his role until the reveal of his real persona in the 3rd Act of Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban (Spoiler alert for a nine year old movie everyone saw based on a fourteen year old book everyone read!)

He's sticking to the light side of the Force as the latest addition to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, reports Coming Soon. The Oscar-nominated British thesp will play "the leader of a human colony." The Matt Reeves-helmed follow-up to 2011's surprise hit (We all laughed off those trailers, even devoted fan of the original Apes fan yours truly but damn it didn't turn out great!) starts filming in my neck of the woods pretty soon. I'll have to hit up some of my pals for details.

Sadly It's The Final "Spring Breakers" Poster

From visionary provocateur Harmony Korine comes a bold new vision of the seasonal American ritual known as spring break — the bacchanalia of bikinis, beach parties and beer bongs that draws hordes of college students to the Florida coast and elsewhere each year.

Brit (Ashley Benson), Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens) and Cotty (Rachel Korine) are best friends anxious to cut loose on their own spring break adventure, but they lack sufficient funds. After holding up a restaurant for quick cash, the girls head to the shore for what they discover is the party of a lifetime. They’re thrown in jail — and quickly bailed out by Alien (James Franco), a local rapper, drug pusher and arms dealer who lures them into a criminal underbelly that’s as lurid as it is liberating for a close-knit gang of girlfriends who are still figuring out their path.

RUMOR: David Goyer Penning Man of Steel Sequel

Reports surfaced over the last few weeks, specifically yesterday outta the offices of JoBlo and Slashfilm on Zack Snyder's cinematic reintroduction to Superman, The Man of Steel.

Yes, it's screened to select crowds. Friends & Family, different levels of execs, and the filmmakers themselves have taken a gander at what Snyder hath wroth. And yes, the word is good. The range of positive varies. One trusted source liked it, with reservations, while another exclaimed it as downright "AMAZING" (their exact words – all caps included). Regardless of how good, it is good and high-ups at Burbank are walking on clouds like Kal-El. Now the question leading up to June 14 is, "Great... and then what?"

We all know Warner Brothers/DC Entertainment can't get their house in order. The narrative for the longest has been they'll wait and see how the Supes redo does. Then they'll make their move. All the talk has been pumping adrenaline into Justice League and have that out by 2015 – a non-subtle way of countering The Avengers 2. A tall order with no director within walking distance and the most recent script, by Gangster Squad typist-turned-WB Golden Boy Will Beall tossed faster than a speeding bullet. It's doable – just looking less likely by each passing day.

Some rumblings suggest Justice League remains the priority, others suggest it's on hold. Rumor we're hearing, and frankly the one that makes the most sense – hence the article you're reading, has the studio aiming their tractor beams at a Superman sequel. Whatever title they bestow upon it (The Man of Tomorrow? The Last Son of Krypton? It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman Two?) the studio is accelerating it into development with David Goyer back on writing duties. Script problems, be damned! Goes to show how tensions disappear in the face of success or in this case, confidence there is success to be had.

Yeah, yeah I know. "Didn't you guys say they were looking at a bunch of writers who weren't Goyer like two years ago?" Correctamundo. They were spit-balling ideas. Execs do that – for the kind of cash they pocket that’s all they do besides li'l things like overseeing productions and making sure they keep their jobs upon the latest regime change.

So if Superman's return (again) to the multiplexes delivers (All signs are good), WB, to their credit, is thinking smart. Supes is here to stay. For real this time.

"Ninja Turtles" Moved To June 6th, 2014

I'm sure when this project was pitched it went something like this:

Bay Or Somebody Like Him: "It's like Transformers meets Batman Begins meets Superman. They come to earth as aliens this time. Forget the radioactive sludge. They're not radioactive. They are martians. They are here for a reason, but it's gritty and dark. They'll still like pizza and say things from the 80s."

Generic Studio Suit Guy: "You had me at Transformers & Batman. Here is money. Go make a movie."

Now that Paramount Pictures has their April O'Neil, the studio has decided to push Ninja Turtles back three weeks to June 6th, 2014. The film was set to drop on May 16th. Production to commence in April.

They keep trying to force these fun loving turtles down our throats but for some reason it just doesn't quite work. I am all for Hollyweird taking another whack at this but I'm not sure there are many more chances after this one. If they need more time to work on the CGI turtles, so be it.
