Because Noone Asked For It: Post-Apocalyptic Zorro In Development

I'll always remember back during the summer of '98 and being pumped for The Mask of Zorro as a kid. That teaser trailer was in front of every other movie I saw during that season and I was counting down the weeks till it opened in late July. Even showed up during its opening 12:00 P.M. screening, and yes, I loved the movie. Didn't catch its 2005 sequel The Legend of Zorro because frankly, it reeked from its trailers and Phil has subsequently confirmed my sense of smell was working just fine.

But it's a matter of time before Johnson McCulley's pulp hero gets a new incarnation because there have been so many before in years past. Nothing wrong with that, but when I hear a radical new take is in development, I'm thinking they'll set it in modern-times, and the BBC's Sherlock has proven that can be successfully done. Correct me if I'm wrong, and that's already been done before with the character.

Zorro Reborn is the newest iteration in the works, and well, I'll let 24 Frames say it:

"Unlike many of the previous Zorros (real name: Don Diego de la Vega) brandishing whips and swords, the hero of the new installment will live in the future -- specifically a desolate and post-apocalyptic one, according to a person familiar with the film who asked not to be identified. A Fox spokeswoman declined to comment."

Fox has commissioned another special effects guy-turned-yes man director (Rpin Suwannath) who will have his nuts squeezed in every argument against studio heads. And who doesn't want to see Zorro sporting ass-less leather chaps and fighting mutants? Oh that's right; most of you good readers out there.
