    'Shutter Island' Teaser Poster

Rope of Silicon was sent a teaser poster of Martin Scorsese’s "Shutter Island scanned from a newspaper of one of their users:

Synopsis: From Oscar®-winning director Martin Scorsese, "Shutter Island" is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island's fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

Head over to Rope of Silicon for a bigger version of the poster and to the Official Site for cast information and company credits.

Wonder Woman Hoping To Lasso Director

I'm beginning to think that IESB has a parking space located somewhere on 4000 Warner Boulevard or maybe a locker in the Hall of Justice? IESB has received some more information on another WB/DC film and surprisingly it doesn't involve Batman or Superman, nor is it even related to Green Lantern.

A few weeks ago, we told you that the live action Wonder Woman film set up over at WB and Silver Pictures had been picking up speed as of late. Last we heard they were on the hunt for new writers and were taking pitches.

Now, we've gotten another tidbit of news from this long dormant franchise, looks like WB and Silver Pictures are now looking for a director. The studios are enthusiastically working together to attach elements to the film to get it up and going quickly.

Looks as though the powers that be are trying to get "Princess Diana" on a fast track to the big screen. Is it possible that they are trying to lasso a spot for 2011 in order to fill WB/DC's comic book film void? You have to wonder when we'll start hearing some news on a possible Flash movie as well. Could WB actually be on their way to executing a team up film for these characters? Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

'Life On Mars' Ends Wednesday, But DVD Details Released

On Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET, the ABC crime show "Life on Mars" will finish its first, and only, season.

The show, a remake of a British show of the same name, will end at 17 episodes. The good news is that the show's creators knew of the impending cancellation in advance, so the show is scheduled to wrap up its storylines.

As "Life on Mars" is one of the few hour-long dramas on TV right now that I truly enjoy, I'm not happy about the cancellation. However, I am grateful that the show will finish what it started.

For those who don't watch the show -- and apparently that's a lot of you -- "Life on Mars" centers around detective Sam Tyler, who is transported from 2008 to 1973 via a mysterious car accident. Along the way, Tyler (played excellently by Jason O'Mara) receives clues as to why this has happened. The top-notch cast also includes Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Mol, Jonathan Murphy and Harvey Keitel.

Now, as much as I am disappointed by the fact that the show will not return for another season, I will admit that wrapping the show up after a single season could be a blessing in disguise. The plot of Det. Tyler being from 2008 and mysteriously ending up in 1973 could have become tedious and frustrating if stretched for too many seasons.

Conversely, though, "Life on Mars" is one of those shows that begins with a gimmick, but becomes so good on its own merits that the gimmick ultimately becomes a handicap. (See also: "How I Met Your Mother.") The cast and stories of "Life on Mars" would be just as compelling if the show was a crime drama set in 1973.

For those who missed the show this season, I have some good news. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release the complete series on DVD Sept. 29.

The four-disc set will include all 17 episodes and four featurettes:

    • A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Life on Mars Concept
    • Learn About the Design and Styles of the 1970s Wardrobe
    • The 1970 Perspective: Police Procedure and Precincts
    • Behind-the-Scenes with a Special Guest

A Pair of Ricky Gervais Movie Updates

There are two new bits of information out about Ricky Gervais movie projects that I wanted to pass along.

First, the not-so-good news. Gervais' directorial debut, "This Side of the Truth," has been pushed back from a March opening until September. The March opening was never set in stone, but the move to Sept. 25 was made official by Gervais in a video blog.

The high-concept comedy film is set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain. If the plot doesn't have you buying your tickets in advance, maybe the film's all-star cast will. How does Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, Christopher Guest, Jonah Hill, Rob Lowe, Jennifer Garner, Jeffrey Tambor and Patrick Stewart sound?

Rumors had the movie being pushed back to 2010 (which is partially the reason for Gervais saying the Sept. 25 date is "good news"). A September release puts the movie out roughly a year after Gervais' previous movie, "Ghost Town," hit theaters.

In other news, Gervais has lined up his next directorial outing -- "The Men at the Pru," described as "a coming-of-age tale about a group of men working at an insurance company in the 1970s."

In addition to directing and producing, Gervais will co-write the movie with Stephen Merchant. Gervais and Merchant co-created and co-starred in "The Office" and "Extras."

According to Variety, Gervais will have a supporting role in the flick, which is set to go into production later this summer.

"This Side of the Truth" will be released by Warner Bros., while Sony is handling "The Men at the Pru."

New Star Trek posters are not logical Jim!

Hey folks, shall we play a little game of spot the difference.  Okey dokey then.  Ready, set........GO:

    Hmmmmmmm....

There are much bigger concerns in the world right now than how the art of the modern movie poster is dying, replaced by the menace of 'the floating head' but I think Paramount may have crossed the line this time by directly ripping off a poster to one of their own blockbusters from only last year (unless it's just me that thinks this and I'm crazily seeing things that aren't there).

Aside from that, notice the wording directly below the title on the 'Star Trek' poster; 'The Future Begins'.  Is this the new subtitle for the film?  Apparently, this is one of the UK posters for the film so it might simply be a European exclusive subtitle.  We know that 'The Future Begins' was the subtitle of the subtitle of 'Terminator: Salvation' for a while before it got dropped.  Have Paramount stolen that as well?  Does 'Star Trek' need a subtitle?

Even though I think the answer is 'no', I'd love to hear your thoughts.  I'm really rather disappointed at Paramount right now.

A shout out to 'MovieWeb' which have some more brand new Trek posters right here

Superman Limbo II: Why The World Needs Superman

Warner Bros. is actually making a bold move when you think about it, they are introducing the cinema world to a DC hero other than Superman or Batman. (Does Catwoman Really Count?) Green Lantern is set to light up the screen on December 17th, 2010 and if done right, this could be a staple franchise for years to come. Now that Lantern finally has a firm date and the “Dark Knight” has turned into dollar signs, where does that leave our favorite alien with a red cape? Does WB even need him? Do we need him?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to return to the world of “Giant Spiders” and “Polar Bears” ie development hell. I don’t think WB wants to either, at least I hope not. There has been a lot going on behind the scenes with the “Brothers Warner” since "Superman Returns" ended its theater run in 2006. They have stopped and started on multiple Superman projects, met with multiple directors and writers, who have thrown out both reboot and sequel ideas. These ideas have turned into outlines and treatments and then subsequently crumpled up and thrown into the trash. All of this occurring while Bryan Singer is under some kind of “right-to-refusal/pay-or-play” deal.

Bryan Singer was given the opportunity of a life time, a project he has coveted for years, and some feel he dropped the ball. Others felt like he hit it out of the park like your average steroid heavy slugger. Obviously WB was mixed on subject, but in the end, money talks and it looks like Bryan finally walked. After the success of “Valkyrie” Bryan is going to stick to what made him and has signed on to direct “The Prisoners”. Although directing Valkyrie might have helped to bury his chance to direct a sequel to “Superman Returns” it was probably the best thing that could have happened to him at this time.

WB obviously wants to get Superman right, thus why they have been meeting with as many directors and writers as possible since 2007. The likes of Gore Verbinski and Orci and Kurtzman reportedly met or spoke with WB on multiple occasions along with other big names. Early pitches delivered by Bryan and concocted by him and writers Mike Dougherty and Dan Harris didn’t seem to impress WB. I give them credit for being careful with the character but if there is any time to get the most out of Superman it is now. Comic book films are bigger then ever and besides “The Dark Knight” WB is falling further behind Marvel each and every day.

Warner Bros has been lucky enough to have the Harry Potter franchise at their disposal for the last decade but the spectacled man child is about to bow out. With Batman, Green Lantern, Terminator, Sherlock Holmes and Hobbit in their arsenal WB is armed and dangerous for some years to come, but having Superman on their side doesn’t hurt. It all depends on Alan Horn who just signed a new two year deal with WB which will be the end of his run with the studio. Does Horn want to redeem himself with a more action packed Superman film or go to battle with what he has and leave Superman to somebody like Jeff Robinov who will go “darker” with the character in 2012 or beyond?

My sources at the studio insist that Brandon Routh is still their Superman no matter the direction they choose to go. However, if Horn isn’t up to facing the risk for a Superman film flying to theaters in Summer or Winter 2011 then Routh has run out of luck and wouldn’t be strapping on the boots for another adventure. At this point every day that passes is critical for the character of Superman, you remember the 90’s? Let’s face it, Christopher Reeve isn’t walking through that door, Richard Donner isn’t walking through that door. We just have to hope that Superman will fly again in the near future, preferably in 2011. You’re on the clock Mr. Horn. Time is ticking.

Oscars Move Away From Showdown With Olympics in 2010

AMPAS (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) announced it has moved the annual Academy Awards ceremony back for next year.

The event will take place March 7 in 2010, instead of in late February as has been the case since 2004.

If the Oscars had not moved, the event would have faced the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, which will be held in Vancouver, Canada.

"Why have two gigantic, spectacular events happen on the same day, particularly these days? The Olympics have some 237 events and we are one big event, so it was easier for us to move and we were happy to do it," said AMPAS President Sid Gani to The Los Angeles Times.

The Grammy Awards also will move out of its typical February spot next year. The Grammy Awards will take place on Jan. 31, 2010.

    Abrams Sticking with Paramount

Paramount has just given J.J. Abrams a big vote of confidence.

The studio has decided to extend their partnership with Abrams and his Bad Robot production company now through 2013.

Abrams currently has an exclusivity deal regarding film-related properties with them. Meanwhile he has a similar television exclusive deal set up over at Warner Brothers. Thus why he's earning big bucks from shows like Lost and films like Star Trek con-currently.

The fact that said deal has been inked a little over a month before Abrams' Trek "requel" beams into theaters shouldn't be a coincidence. Although the film won't be officially screened for critics for another two weeks, Paramount has to already know they might have a big hit on their hands and want to pertain the services of Abrams & Co. for any sequel(s) ASAP.

Even if Star Trek turns out be a box-office monster, I can't see Abrams returning to the director's chair for the sequel. I could certainly be wrong however - just a hunch on my part.

Fox Plots Possible Cruise and Diaz Team Up

Fox are hoping to cast the megastar pairing of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in a romantic comedy that they have been trying to get off the ground for a while according to Variety, '3:10 To Yuma' helmer James Manglond is lined up to direct.

James Mangold is attached to direct the untitled romantic comedy formerly known as "Wichita" and "Trouble Man" at 20th Century Fox. It's eyed as a potential pairing of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

Scott Frank is working on a rewrite.

Mangold's Tree Line Films partner Cathy Konrad joins as producer with Joe Roth, Steve Pink and Todd Garner.

Story revolves around a woman who has terrible luck with men but finds her path intertwined with that of a mysterious handsome man she meets on a blind date.

The studio has been sweet on the two-hander for some time. Chris Tucker and Eva Mendes were attached last year along with director Tom Dey, but that incarnation fizzled. The script was originated by Patrick O'Neill, and prior drafts have been done by Frank and Dana Fox, who wrote the Diaz starrer "What Happens in Vegas" for Fox.

Mangold last directed "Walk the Line" and "3:10 to Yuma."

Neither Cruise nor Diaz is formally attached, but the project is one of several films at various studios that Cruise is considering for his next star vehicle. Diaz just became attached to "Swingles," a romantic comedy at Paramount.

Cruise and Diaz appeared together in 2001's "Vanilla Sky."

Ive always liked Cameron Diaz and I think Mangold is a good director but Cruise has way more interesting projects on the table than this, not to mention it is at the dreaded Fox, the last thing Cruise needs is some vacuous 90 minute rom com after the success of Valkyrie.
