Screen Gems Want To Remake 'The Raid'

The pitchforks and burning torches are already out on the internet, although how many of the people upset about this remake have seen the film is uncertain given it only just played at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it got a lot of love and won an award.

I've seen the trailer and it looks pretty violent so of course that means it's "cool" in the eyes upset at the death of the R rated action film in the US. The Hollywood Reporter got the scoop.

The Raid, the Indonesian action movie that is fresh off winning the Midnight Madness sidebar’s audience award at TIFF, is getting the Hollywood remake treatment.

Screen Gems is in negotiations on a remake, a move made possible for the label since sister arm Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions picked up North American distribution rights to the film during the Cannes Film Festival. The initial deal called for Sony to have an exclusive negotiating period and right of refusal on a remake in its deal with XYZ Films, the makers of the original.

The movie was the only Midnight Madness flick that already had a distributor when it premiered at TIFF’s Midnight Madness, the late-night screening series that showcases genre flicks. The movie kicked off the series and was a sensation from the get-go, becoming one of the talks of the festival.

The movie tells the story of a SWAT team that becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster, armed with two highly violent martial arts killers and an army of machete-swinging, machine gun-toting dealers and thugs.

One of the buzz-generating aspects of the movie is the Indonesian fighting form called silat that were put into it by writer-director Gareth Evans, who just signed with Management 360.

How this unique aspect would be handled by a remake is not clear although Screen Gems is aware the unique fighting style is one of the movie’s strengths.

The company is hoping to tie down a filmmaker shortly though it will not be Evans, who opted out of repeating himself and will focus on making a sequel that he hopes to shoot in February

Screen Gems has tackled remakes of foreign films in the past, most successfully with Quarantine, a horror movie starring Jennifer Carpenter which was a remake of the Spanish scary movie Rec.

DC's animated arm has always delivered the goods, their last outing 'Under the Red Hood' being perhaps their best to date. Next month sees the release of their adaption of Frank Millers classic, game changing 'Batman: Year One', and Comingsoon.net via Warner Home Video has the first clip from the movie.

Anyone familiar with the book should love the clip, it's a classic and pivotal scene that has been translated perfectly from the book without any real fiddling.

Gangster Squad Set Pics!

This thing has a cast the size of a Football squad and Comingsoon.Net has the first set pictures, featuring indie favourite Ryan Gosling and the awesome Emma Stone.

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop... except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart.

"1911" Trailer

At the beginning of the 20th century, China is in a state of crisis. The country is split into warring factions, the citizens are starving, and recent political reforms have made matters worse, not better. The ruling Qing Dynasty, led by a seven-year-old emperor and his ruthless mother, Empress Dowager Longyu, is completely out of touch after 250 years of unquestioned power.

With ordinary citizens beginning to revolt openly, the Qing Dynasty has created a powerful, modern army (the "New Army") to quash any rebellion. But weapons are expensive, and desperate for cash, the Qing leaders are trading anything they can get their hands on with foreign countries... and selling China's future in the process. Huang Xing (Chan) has recently returned from Japan, where he has studied the art of modern warfare. When he finds his country falling apart, he feels he has no choice but to pick up the sword, leading an increasingly desperate series of violent rebellions against the powerful Qing Dynasty and the New Army- several with tragic consequences

Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Blu-Ray Clip

As reported on Blu-Ray.com earlier today, Warner Brothers has announced that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 will be released on DVD/blu-ray in on November 11.  The blu-ray news was a little mixed...sure, we'll be able to own the awesome Harry Potter finale soon, but the release seems a bit light on extra features (presumably because the inevitable 'Ultimate Edition' blu-ray will out next year sometime), and while there will be a box set of all 8 films, that's basically going to be a bare-bones set as well.  I'm guessing that they're waiting for at least another year or so to release whatever ultimate, gotta-have, super-cool box set of the entire series fans are really waiting for.

In the meantime, Deathly Hallows - Part 2 will still have some nice extras included on the 2-disc, including deleted scenes and a conversation with JK Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe, which all sounds pretty good.  Plus it will have 9 featurettes on the final film as part of the Maximum Movie Mode, hosted by Matthew Lewis (aka: Neville Longbottom), including this behind-the-scenes clip of Hermione and Ron's infamous first snog:

Too cute.  And it was still awkward as all hell in the final film.

Real Steel Gets a Little Flirty

I still think this movie looks like a lot of fun.  And Hugh Jackman is in it, so I'm definitely there.  Popsugar has premiered a new clip from Real Steel, which opens in theaters on October 7.  In a clip that does not feature a single robot, Jackman and co-star Evangeline Lilly spar and flirt a bit over the fate of Lilly's father's gym:

If that was a little cutesy for you, there's always Hugh Jackman's WWE Raw debut promoting the movie, which aired last night.  If nothing else, it's probably the only time the Tony Awards will ever mentioned during a wrestling match.

Avengers Footage At NYCC

With the New York Comic Con less than a month away, the schedule slate has been revealed and Marvel Studios will be greeting the fans at the event with some new footage of the highly anticipated Avengers flick. They also give a tease that mystery guests will show up which I assume could include any members of the cast from the movie, possibly director Joss Whedon even. Look for bootleg quality of the footage to find its way online before the studio requests or demands it be taken down. Fans attending can catch all the goodies on Saturday, October 15 from 6:30pm - 7:30pm in the IGN Theater.

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger," in "Marvel's The Avengers" the world's greatest Super Heroes must assemble to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security. This special presentation will feature never-before-seen footage and appearances by special surprise guests.
