Wolverine Updates From Jackman

MTV talked with Hugh Jackman about the upcoming Wolverine film which is on to begin filming next year.

"There's such great temptation to make an R-rated 'Wolverine'," he says, "I've always felt that. I know a lot of fans would like that. I totally get it. If there was ever a superhero that was going to be R-rated, it's Wolverine. However, in the last ten years, I've also met many, many 12, 13, dare I say 10, 14, 15 year-olds who, for them, Wolverine is not just cool, you see it in their eyes. He's everything to them. So my thing is -- which James Mangold and I talked about -- is let's not put it off the table. There's even a talk of us doing two versions, as in finding a way for us to do both as you shoot it, which could be really cool. But you need to have a really good reason to exclude those fans."

Boston Commuters Already Hate "R.I.P.D"

Even though it was a holiday for a good number of Massachusetts residents, it was still business as usual for some of you out there, including Hollywoodites Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Bacon. Their new flick "R.I.P.D." was shooting in Boston this morning which shut-down the Zakim Bridge leaving rowdy commuters stuck in staring at break lights on and off from early morning rush hour until noon.

According to state police spokesperson David Procopio State troopers were initiating what are called "rolling roadblocks" on route 93 which didn't help drivers get to where they wanted to go. Commuter Sharon Lundin of Burlington MA was none to happy about the movie roadblocking her morning:

“It’s a mess. I feel bad for all the people who had to come to work and sit in traffic waiting for the stupid movie. That should be done in the middle of the night with lights.”

If there is one group of people you don't want to mess with, it's Boston drivers. I'm hoping that Kevin Bacon and Reynolds are looking over their shoulders. The Red Sox folding like a blanket in September is not going to help their moods.

Don't Like a Movie? "Sue the Distributor!" Says One Moron

Everyone has their own taste in important, life-altering topics like religion or politics and more meaningless bullshit like film, television, music, fashion and so on. Having your own train-of-thought that doesn't gel with others is perfectly fine and doesn’t make you stupid.

On the other hand, filing a frivolous lawsuit against a film distributor because you didn't like the motion-picture in question definitely makes you a jackass.

Detroit station WDIV-TV (via Gawker) reports local Sarah Deming filed a claim against FilmDistrict for the art-house actioner Drive starring Ryan Gosling and Albert Brooks and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. Her argument is the movie FilmDistrict sold to her and the general movie-going public wasn't the movie they saw. While there's legitimacy to her claim (I can vouch my audience walked out hating Drive), such practice has been going on for as long as film has been a viable medium. We see this happen all the time.

Where she loses what admittedly-little credibility she had is the claim Drive is also anti-Semitic stating it "contained extreme gratuitous defamatory dehumanizing racism directed against members of the Jewish faith, and thereby promoted criminal violence against members of the Jewish faith." Yeah, Driver (Gosling) totally went after Bernie (Brooks) and Nino (Ron Perlman) for being Jewish and not because they were violent gangsters who were after him.

When the judge inevitably dismisses this case, I sincerely hope they also make Deming cover the costs of the proceedings for wasting everyone's time with this crap.

"A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas" Character Posters

After years of growing apart, Harold Lee (John Cho) and Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) have replaced each other with new friends and are preparing for their respective Yuletide celebrations. But when a mysterious package mistakenly arrives at Kumar's door on Christmas Eve, his attempt to redirect it to Harold's house ends with the "high grade" contents—and Harold's father-in-law's prize Christmas tree—going up in smoke. With his in-laws out of the house for the day, Harold decides to cover his tracks, rather than come clean. Reluctantly embarking on another ill-advised journey with Kumar through New York City, their search for the perfect replacement tree almost blows Christmas Eve sky high.

Superman's Birth Mother Looks Good In Tight Jeans

It looks like Ayelet Zurer has arrived on "The Man Of Steel" set in Vancouver to take on the role of Superman's birth mother Lara. Superman might have two of the hottest mom's in the universe with Zurer as his Kryptonian parent and Diane Lane playing the role of Ma Kent. I don't think Eva Marie Saint could pull off those tight jeans.

You may know Zurer from "Angels & Demons" or "Munich" two high profile gigs. Zurer is replacing Julia Ormand in the role. Based on what we have seen so far on set, I am assuming we are going to get a different looking Lara. Hopefully she she'll take a smoke break with Russell Crowe so we can see what Kryptonian garb she'll be wearing.

Weekend Box Office: October 7-9

Courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

1.  Real Steel - $27.3 million

2.  The Ides of March - $10.4 million

3.  Dolphin Tale - $9.1 million

4.  Moneyball - $7.5 million

5.  50/50 - $5.5 million

6.  Courageous - $4.6 million

7.  The Lion King 3D - $4.552 million

8.  Dream House - $4.5 million

9.  What's Your Number? - $3 million

10.  Abduction - $2.9 million

The box office was ruled by boxing robots this weekend as Real Steel takes the top spot with an estimated $27.3 million.  While it wasn't an earth-shattering debut, it was a decent start in what was essentially another relatively quiet weekend at the box office.  However, the film did earn an impressive "A" Cinemascore rating from audiences (which, unsurprisingly, were mostly guys), and with no big family films opening until Puss In Boots hits theaters at the end of the month, good word of mouth could sustain some steady box office for this one until then.

I'll add to the good word-of-mouth for Real Steel with a mini-review here:  I saw the movie this weekend and it was a blast.  It was basically a mashup of Rocky, The Iron Giant, and The Champ (without the miserable ending), and shockingly, it all worked.  Even the kid did a great job.  The audience I saw it with went nuts for it, and the fight scene at the end was worth the extra cash spent on the IMAX ticket.  Definitely catch it if you get the chance.

As far as the rest of the box office, the George Clooney/Ryan Gosling political thriller The Ides of March opened about as expected with $10.4 million.  Whether or not that keeps it in the Oscar race will depend on how well it does from here.  Oscar contender Moneyball continues to play well, landing in fourth place with $7.5 million.

Dolphin Tale remained a popular choice for the family crowd this weekend, dropping only 34% to earn another $9.1 million.  With The Lion King arriving on DVD/blu-ray this past week, the 3D theatrical release is quickly fading out, falling down to seventh place with $4.5 million.  The re-release has grossed an impressive $86 million since returning to theaters last month, which is why Disney recently announced that 3D re-releases of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, and Monsters Inc. will be heading to theaters in 2012 and 2013.

It was better news this weekend for 50/50, which dropped only 36% from its not-so-great opening last weekend, so positive word about the movie seems to be taking hold a little.  The mainly church-group audiences that fueled Courageous to an $8 million opening dropped by half this weekend with $4.6 million, although with a budget of about $2 million, it's still a big hit.

Next weekend sees the releases of two remakes that no one asked for:  The Thing (which is actually a remake of a remake), and Footloose (which, going by the ads, looks like the exact same film as the 1984 version, only the Kevin Bacon character has a Boston accent).  Who said Hollywood has run out of ideas?
