No Dark Tower For J.J. Abrams

If you’re one of those hoping to see a Dark Tower movie, don’t expect it anytime in the near future – especially not with J.J. Abrams in the director’s chair. The Stephen King series has long been on the part-time Verizon Wireless salesman’s “To Do” list. But considering he’s already attached to 40 billion other projects, there was going to be a casualty.

The Star Trek (and presumably Trek 2) helmer confirms to MTV his time on the would-be property is a thing of the past:

“After working six years on 'Lost,' the last thing I want to do is spend the next seven years adapting one of my favorite books of all time. I'm such a massive Stephen King fan that I'm terrified of screwing it up. I'd do anything to see those movies written by someone else. My guess is they will get made because they're so incredible. But not by me.”

To his credit, Abrams’ isn’t blaming this on Paramount or anyone else. If he really wanted to get this made, he could with the kind of clout he has right now. So the closest thing you’re going to get for the time-being will be the li’l cocktease at the beginning of Frank Darabont’s The Mist.
