It's 'Impossible" For Cruise To "Trek" On Without Abrams

Tom Cruise's stock has certainly experienced a steady climb due to his turn as poison tongued movie executive Les Grossman in "Tropic Thunder" and his performance as the heroic Claus von Stauffenberg in "Valkyrie". He has come a long way from jumping on couches and making himself available as a target for water squirting faux microphones. This new found swagger seems to have Tom feeling a little bit nostalgic according to J.J. Abrams from an interview in the latest TV Guide.

The man behind “Lost,” “Fringe” and the latest Star Trek smash is reteaming with Tom Cruise to resurrect superspy Ethan Hunt for a fourth installment of the popular franchise. “I am incredibly honored that Tom has invited me back as a producer on Mission Impossible 4,” says J.J. Abrams, who directed 2006’s MI: 3, but hasn’t yet committed to directing the fourth. “Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing.” Send Ethan to the “Lost” island to find out what the hell’s going on. That mission is really impossible!

It isn't really breaking news that Tom Cruise would want J.J. Abrams on board with him for a possible "MI:4". Abrams is responsible for the most talked about film of the summer in "Star Trek". Sure, MI:3 didn't fair all that well at the box office, but do you think that is the fault of the spectacled Abrams or the once overzealous antics of Tom Cruise? I would have to say that some bad buzz created by Tom Cruise himself didn't really help what was considered by critics the best of the "Mission Impossible" series.

Cruise previously mentioned that he was writing MI:4 but the question remains will step back into the shoes of Ethan Hunt? At one point Brad Pitt was beeing coddled by Paramount to take on the role as a new agent and breath some life back into the series, this of course fell through. Later the studio threw the idea against the wall of bringing on Brandon Routh to either play a young Ethan Hunt or a different character all together in a reboot of the series, which also fell by the way side.

I guess the bigger question might be the level of Abrams involvement if this small piece of news ever actually turns into a "Mission Impossible 4" later down the line. Many fans think that Abrams continuing on as the director of a Star Trek Sequel is a sure thing at this point but I wouldn't tell Scottie to beam him up just yet. Abrams could very well produce and help with the writing process on a possible sequel and move on to other projects. Does that leave him open to a bigger role with Cruise on MI:4, or the more likely scenario, he moves on to something else all together.

    Johnny 5 Is Back Alive

A little over two weeks ago I was sitting on my couch working on an article. My dog and my girlfriend were both asleep on the couch next to me and I just finished watching the Red Sox. I decided to scroll through some of the free movies and I don't know if I just had a hankering for some Steve Guttenberg or a desire to witness some advanced robotics in action, but I rented "Short Circuit". I watched it from beginning to end and enjoyed it just as much as I did so many years ago.

Cut to this past week and Variety reports that Dimension has selected Dan Millano of "Robot Chicken" fame to pen a remake of "Short Circuit". I'm usually not too keen on remakes but I can get on board with this one. I'm actually looking to an update to one of my favorite childhood flicks.

"We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals," Foster said.

I'm expecting that there will be a little more darkness to this version of "Short Circuit" but I expect some laughs as well. Hopefully this will actually make it to the screen and isn't "disassembled" before cameras start rolling.

    Dunst On Board 'Spiderman 4'...Again

This past week the movie news pioneers over at Aint It Cool News revealed what was thought to be a teaser poster for "Spiderman 4" which was photographed hanging at the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas. Although the poster was actually present at the Expo sources have told SuperHeroHype! that no official artwork has been released for "Spiderman 4" which is still in development.

Yesterday N.Y. Post.com blogs. posted an interview with Sony producer Todd Black which confirmed AGAIN that Kirstin Dunst was indeed in place to reprise her role as the wispy haired MJ in "Spiderman 4". Black also revealed the description of the villian to be:

"We're just coming up with who the villain's going to be now. We'll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it'll be a big part of New York."

Rumors are abound that the villian could very well be Kingpin, who we last saw stalking Daredevil on the big screen.

    Transformers: Marketing Meets The Eye

The marketing for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has officially kicked into 2nd gear.

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" International Poster

Four "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" TV Spots

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" Promo Shot

"Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen" Footage From 'BotCon'

The footage started with John Turturro and Sam's roomate in the middle of a construction zone looking on to a group of construction vehicles surround them. The constructicons were revealed when Mixmasters Decepticon symbol is shown and Scavenger begins to transform. At the same time the other constructicons move closer to form Devastator!!!

Scavenger literally forces all the other constructicons into the gestalt ala Scorpion in Mortal Kombat. Tuturro then runs with Sam's roomate when the scene cuts to Sam and Mikaela running from Rampage.

Rampage begins chasing Sam's father when Sam jumps in front of him to draw his attention. Sam then says "Wait, it's not them you want. It's this, the MATRIX! He then holds up an item and continues to coax Rampage when Bumblebee arrives. The battle begins.

Rampage and Bumblebee fight ferociously with Bumblebee getting the better of Rampage when Ravage enters the fray. Using his hip cannons he blasts Bee and jumps on his back. Bumblebee then forces Rampage to the ground when Rampage lunges for Sam and takes Ravage and terrors him apart piece by piece.

Bumblebee then rips Rampages arm off and decapitates him.
