"Mesrine: Killer Instinct" Official Trailer

Music Box Films has released the official trailer for "Mesrine: Killer Instinct". You can view the trailer over at Apple Trailers.

Winner of three Césars (French Academy Awards) for Best Actor, Best Director and Best Sound, MESRINE was co-written and directed by Jean-François Richet, from a screenplay by Abdel Raouf Dafri (A PROPHET) adapted from Jacques Mesrine's autobiography L'Instinct de mort (Death Instinct).  The films star Vincent Cassel, Cécile de France, Gérard Depardieu, Roy Dupuis, Ludivine Sagnier, Mathieu Amalric, Elena Anaya and Olivier Gourmet.

MESRINE:  KILLER INSTINCT - the first of two parts - charts the outlaw odyssey of Jacques Mesrine (Vincent Cassel), the legendary French gangster of the 1960s and 1970s who came to be known as French Public Enemy No. 1 and The Man of a Thousand Faces.  Infamous for his bravado and outrageously daring prison escapes, Mesrine carried out numerous robberies, kidnappings and murders in a criminal career that spanned continents until he was shot dead in 1979 by France's notorious anti-gang unit. Thirty years after his death, his infamy lives on.

Mesrine was helped along the way by beautiful and equally reckless Jeanne Schneider (Cécile de France), a Bonnie to match his Clyde. Mesrine made up his own epic, between romanticism and cruelty, flamboyance and tragedy. Both a thriller and a biopic, KILLER INSTINCT explores the man behind the icon.

Maverick French star Vincent Cassel's performances include the upcoming Darren Aronofsky's BLACK SWAN and Romain Gavras' REDHEADS.  He previously appeared in Steven Soderbergh's OCEAN'S TWELVE and THIRTEEN and David Cronenberg's EASTERN PROMISES (as Kerill, the son of Russian mobster Semyon).  His other credits include Mathieu Kassovitz' LA HAINE and CRIMSON RIVERS, Christopher Gans' BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLVES and Gaspar Noé's IRREVERSIBLE.

Cassel is currently in production on Dominik Moll's THE MONK and will soon begin production on David Cronenberg's A DANGEROUS METHOD.   Award-winning director Jean-François Richet's credits include ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, DE L'AMOUR (ALL ABOUT LOVE), MA 6-T VA CRACK-ER and ETAT DES LIEUX.

MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT will open in select theaters August 13, 2010 from Music Box Films.

Ashton Kutcher Might Return for Valentine's Day Sequel

Audiences chose pretty-faced twenty/thirty-somethings getting all lovey-dovey instead of Benicio del Toro howling at the moon and sniffing Emily Blunt’s crotch. Couples went to see a movie called Valentine's Day on that very weekend? Fuck you, rocket science!

Not surprisingly, Warner Brothers starting chanting "Sequel! Sequel! Sequel!" when those big numbers came in that weekend and Valentine's Day is getting a follow-up film New Year's Eve.

One of its (many) stars Ashton Kutcher confirms to Movie Hole he might show back up for the next one:

"They've talked to me about it. But I haven't read the script yet... It's script dependent".

Granted, there’s awhile to go before cameras get rolling – again under Garry Marshall's direction. This won’t hit until December 30, 2011.

Yet Another Riddler/Batman 3 Rumor Surfaces

Certain rumors refuse to die. It doesn't matter if the claims have even a morsel of truth or are 100% Grade-A Internet bullshit. Some would rather die than give up on said rumor. It’s sad, really.

Here we have yet another "The Riddler will be the big baddie in Batman 3" story circulating the world-wide-web. This latest one comes courtesy of First Showing. Basically a source tells them the newest casting grid (i.e. industry documents giving the latest updates on productions, uncast roles in need of filling, etc.) says the question-prone villain is listed as a character in Christopher Nolan's third Batman installment.

It furthermore lists Joseph Gordon-Levitt (now an associate of Team Nolan with his co-starring role in current box-office champ Inception) as being "interested." He's no stranger to Batman 3 fodder, having been constantly suggested in threads, comment-sections, comic-book shops, parents’ basements, etc. as either a Joker replacement for the late Heath Ledger or Edward Nigma.

Assuming any of this is true; my guess is the Riddler would be one piece in a puzzle of antagonists not unlike how Nolan did Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Either way (I'm leaning towards it being bullshit personally), it shouldn't be too terribly much longer until Warner Brothers/Legendary Pictures release more details on the next one including a title and official confirmation on Nolan directing.

Is "The Hobbit" Wagging The Dog?

First it is happening, then it isn't happening, then it is delayed, then it isn't delayed. A director is on the project, then he is off the project. Now a new director who was an old director is back on the project. Where am I?

Thus has been the crazy mixed up tale that is the sort of pre-production we have been calling "The Hobbit". Now that Peter Jackson has again been thrust into the director's chair fans are even more hopeful that we get to see those mangled little Hobbit feet meandering around the plush grass of The Shire once again.

I hate to be the one who breaks the news to you, but it seems like Peter Jackson came back on for the sole purpose of diverting the attention of the fans and media from the mess going on with MGM, which makes it impossible for "The Hobbit" to get off the ground anyway.

Peter Jackson will go through the motions with casting and other such directorial maneuvers as he sits in an room with no windows void of furniture with the exception of a fold out chair, plywood table, and red rotary phone. This is most likely all that is left at MGM headquarters.

The presence of Peter Jackson lessens the blow of Hobbit not happening to the fanbase. When those still holding on to hope that this film is still happening finally realize there is no shot for a 2012 release, nevermind any time soon, they'll feel better about it because Peter Jackson was "doing his best" to get things done.

The problem is that Peter Jackson, even if he were wearing a ring, isn't some kind of magician. MGM is so far in the hole that if they move a rock they'll stick their head out and find themselves in China. Jackson is merely a figurehead, very similar to a country that has a president and a king, the king is just there to shake hands and greet people.

'A dog is smarter than its tail', but if the tail were smarter, then the tail would 'wag the dog.'

Batman 3: IMAX Compatible

Back in April, cinematographer Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight, Inception) shared his ideas for an entire Batman flick shot in the IMAX format. He and Nolan talked of shooting Inception in the format as well but agreed that the "hand-held camera" style they were aiming towards wouldn't quite work.

MTV now has an exclusive interview with the cinematographer about his plans for the upcoming Batman 3 and how he feels not only about IMAX shooting, but also the new go-to format, 3-D:

"I can't say until I read the script, but it would certainly be my preferred, amazing goal to shoot the whole movie in IMAX," Pfister said.

"I must say I'm a huge IMAX fan. I like IMAX more than I like 3-D," he explained. "Chris' films are so densely layered and have so much going on visually in every way that IMAX helps enhance that because of the scope and the scale of it — it becomes a much larger canvas to paint on. That's what we found on 'Dark Knight.'

"I'm not a big fan of 3-D," he continued. "I liken it to my View-Master I had 40 years ago. Are you really getting more out of the story with 3-D? When you separate those different planes and you're creating artificial depth, it looks phony to me."

Last year I would've leaned against his comments with the 3-D format. I was beginning to enjoy some of the films that were made specifically for the technology. When I actually go back and compare them to what the IMAX scenes brought and what the capabilities of an entire film shot with those cameras could bring, it heightens my anticipation further.

3-D is beginning to wear itself thin, and the idea of an entire live-action film in a huge, crisp format, I believe, benefits more for the general audience and the movie itself. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that they find away to make this happen.
