Batman 3 News Coming. Maybe. Probably.

If some loser-twerp says, “News is coming! I can’t say what it is, but its coming I tells ya!” that’s not news and they’re obviously just making shit up. Like the kind Peter was referring to in his Separating the Men From the Fanboys article from yesterday.

However if it’s a non-moron like Bill Ramey (aka Jett) over at Batman-On-Film and he actually talks about what we should expect to hear, then it is news, boys and girls. See? That wasn’t so hard to distinguish. Granted this is stuff everyone figured would take place but still. According to his source(s) (and citing “scuttlebutt”), any agreement between Christopher Nolan and Warner Brothers for Batman 3 should be signed, sealed and delivered by as early as January 2010.

I'm weary of this "An annoucement is coming!" type of news. What happens if January comes and goes and nothing happens? Are we prone for the go-to "Well, things change!" response/excuse. I'm taking Jett at his word here. But that's a fair and realistic question to pose, folks.

They also add, "the longer we don't here a Nolan/B3 announcement in 2010, the less likely it is that the director will return." That's a given though. But still we get what Jett (and his sources) is saying.

If Nolan is returning for a third trip to the director's chair (and I personally think he is), the best thing they can do is just go ahead and announce the damn thing. Give everyone some basic information like the title, release date, Christian Bale wearing the cape and cowl again, Jonah Nolan and David Goyer returning to write, etc. and leave it at that. Don't go into anymore details for the time being.

Then Warner Brothers and Nolan can spend the rest of their time promoting Inception and if some dipshit (like you know, MTV Movies Blog) asks about Batman 3, they just point to the previously unveiled information and leave it at that.

James McTeigue Keeps Talking Superman - For Some Reason

For any filmmaker, nerd, fanboy, etc. saying, “If I did the next Superman movie, I’d make it different from the last one. You know I’d make it dark and stuff,” then you actually didn’t sit through Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. No matter your opinion on its quality (or lack thereof), Singer tried to balance the well beloved and established myth of Krypton’s Last Son with a more realistic angle and edge (i.e. giving Supes and Lois a little boy, Lex gutting the Man of Steel with a kryptonite ice-pick, etc.)

So it was interesting when director James McTeigue said a few months back how he’d make Kal-El dark (here and here). Oy vey. To be fair, the difference between him and say, oh I don’t know Mark Millar is he had an actual chance of making a new Superman film. He’s not just talking outta his ass for attention unlike that press-whoring, bullshit-spreader. But that was a couple of months back.

Now MTV caught up with McTeigue while he’s making the rounds for Ninja Assassins. There was no way they weren’t going to ask him about Superman and that they did:

“It's in a weird place at the moment. They're trying to work out what they're doing. Warner Brothers is trying to figure out their next move on it. There's some things you can do with the 'Superman' franchise, there's other things you can't do. So it hasn't gone anywhere."

So this is obvious non-news and it’s merely a reiteration of Warner Brothers/DC’s “No current plans” status from yester-month. At least, he’s moved past his “I can neither confirm nor deny” answer. Will we get another Superman movie? Absolutely. Will the Man of Steel fly into cinemas anytime soon like 2011? Doubtful.

The Warriors Three Cast For Thor

UPDATE: Now Variety has put the original article in question back up this morning. Um, whatever. Weird.

More casting has gone down for Thor leading up to its January start-date.

Last night, Variety reported actors Tadanobu Asano, Ray Stevenson and Stuart Townsend signed on the dotted line to join the production. They’re to play the Warriors Three, the adventure-seeking god buddies of our hammer-carrying hero. Remember, Chuck’s Zachary Levi was originally cast as one of the members Fandral, but had to drop out.

Then a funny thing happened. The trades pulled the article. As if it never happened. Weird, huh? Why did they yank it to begin with? *Shrugs*

Nonetheless, Coming Soon has the original details so they’re the ones I’m crediting for the story. You can take it for what it’s worth until more info rears its head.

Disney Sinks The Nautilus

Captain Nemo’s days were numbers when the Disney D23 convention came and went without a single word uttered about it. Adding insult to injury was Tron: Legacy getting a prime Christmas 2010 release date which was previously intended for the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea prequel.

Now Variety confirms what everyone already knew. Disney has killed the project. Slight correction, it’s been “halted indefinitely.” As we all know, that’s an apolitical way of saying, “Never gonna happen.”

At the start of this year, it was considered a major coup on Disney’s part getting McG on-board. Terminator: Salvation was expected to dominant the summer box-office (Star Trek? The Hangover? What the Hell are those?) with projections ranging from $220-250 million domestically. After it tanked stateside, the chances of Nemo happening died with the Terminator franchise.

Harsh words? Sure. But it’s the truth. For those months leading up to Salvation’s May opening, McG was the Golden boy of Hollywood. It was going to be the film to prove he was more than just a stupid nick-name. Alas. I’d be surprised if any studio lets him take the reign on another mega-property now.

Rachel McAdams Denies Spider-Man 4 Rumors

If there’s any truth to those Rachel McAdams for Spider-Man 4 rumors from last week, don’t expect her to spill the beans. Entertainment Weekly caught up with the Sherlock Holmes actress (presumably beginning her press rounds for the Christmas tentpole) who categorically denied the story:

“I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, ‘I just heard you’re doing Spider-Man 4.’ And I said, ‘Really? No one told me!’ It’s not true. It’s an Internet rumor, as so many things are these days.”

Fair enough. She could be telling the truth. So I’ll just nod and give her the benefit of the doubt.

However I would direct the jury to what happened to Bradley Cooper. IESB leaked details that he would appear as Face in The A-Team months before it was officially announced. What happened when he was asked by the site point-blank? He initially confirmed it only to quickly deny the Hell out of it to CHUD.

There’s also the chance that an actress could come out of nowhere to get the role (assuming the Black Cat does in fact appear in Spider-Man 4).

Remember how many actors were leaked by movie-news sites to be meeting with Warner Brothers for Green Lantern? A LOT. And none of them were Ryan Reynolds.

Just saying, folks…

Four "Alice In Wonderland' Posters

The quirky cinematic eye of Tim Burton has gone from new and fresh to safe and comforting. To some that might be a bad thing but others might enjoy the satisfaction of knowing what they'll get for their two hour stay in a cramped seat at the local multiplex. Recognizing a Tim Buton film is like reading through an edition of "Where's Waldo" for the second time, he gets easier and easier to spot. Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" is no exception. It is big, bold, and Burtonesque. Johnny Depp is even along for the ride, playing The Mad Hatter. Check out the poster below. Three more for your viewing pleasure over at Coming Soon.

Fanboys 2 - The Revenge of McG

He’ll claim it’s not personal, but who’s he kidding? McG was practically crucified by the fanboy community for Terminator: Salvation. However unlike people like Brett Ratner, he brought the criticism all to himself. What with the constant lying and all.

However now that that tidal wave has passed, he can finally reap his revenge on those who shit on him (and his name). Variety reports the director and comedy writer/producer Larry Charles are developing an untitled pilot for NBC about (what else?) fanboys.

The potential comedy series (with this pilot being described as a “prototype”) involves a team of fanboys who decide to scrape up the money and shoot episodes of their favorite science fiction series after it’s cancelled by the network. So they’re basically making fun of Star Trek: Phase II from that description.

Will Peter Parker Be Changing Spider-Diapers?

I know that Sam Raimi said he loved Superman Returns. But it's safe to say no one thought he'd head in a direction not unlike Bryan Singer did with the Man of Steel. And we all know how overwhelmingly positive that movie was received by everyone.

SpoilerTV has apprehended a casting notice for Spider-Man 4 with the following name and description:

[TODDLER BOY]

2 or 3 year old boy to play 2 year old, Caucasian with RED HAIR, an adorable toddler with an engaging personality, on set experience preferred. IDENTICAL TWINS ONLY

Well, this would definitely advance Peter Parker since we last saw him at the end of Spider-Man 3. It would also make some sense when the trades stated that James Vanderbilt's Spider-Man 5 and 6 screenplays could be used as reboots to the franchises. Ending on Spider-Man swinging his little one to Superhero Daycare would be hard to avoid to a sequel.

That said, I would list this under "Rumor" for the time being. But I wouldn't put it past Raimi to do this for his swan-song from the series.

Separating The Men From The Fanboys

Fanboys. They've been around for years. On some level I am one, and if you are reading this article, you are most likely have a little fanboy in you as well. Maybe your dad was a fanboy, your little brother might be one. This group has certainly evolved over the years, they've come a long way from "Spock Ears" and the "World Science Fiction Convention". On some levels fanboys have influenced studios, many now run major movie websites, and a few even work at said studios. They are everywhere. At your local video store, comic book shop, multiplex, and infiltrating forums all across cyberspace. With advanced technology now at their disposal fanboys have a bigger voice and they are certainly taking advantage of it. The problem is some fanboys, not all, have this sense of entitlement. They are living in a fantasy world where studios should listen to their thoughts and adopt them. Some even lead others to believe they have direct lines to studio. This is when good fanboys go bad.

If you don't feed fanboys after midnight, keep them away from bright light, and avoid water, you still don't have a shot. Some of these individuals have parked themselves in a forum playing into the eagerness of other naive fanboys who just want to see their favorite comic book character on the big screen. They claim to be insiders with knowledge about casting and plot points. I call them "Zombies", they spread lies and infect an entire forum section, creating a pack of mindless "Zombies" in the process. They draw their fellow fanboys in like Mothra to a city aflame and these posters follow them like lemmings no matter how ridiculous their info may be. Once they have them hooked the "Zombies" tell these poor innocent fanboys what they want to hear. The fanboy posse grows and they will defend their "Zombie" leader no matter what the cost. The followers want to believe whatever information they are hearing so badly, that they even begin to buy into the lies and embrace them. It is really a sad and sorry addiction that sometimes takes years to overcome.

To be fair to the real insiders, there are actually what are called "Plants"on some of the bigger movie forums. These "Plants" post casting suggestions and plot points, sometimes even revealing breaking news before major websites even know what hit them. These "Plants" might work for the studio as an intern, or it might even be a higher level executive pounding out juicy info on a shiny silver netbook. There are times when studios will have on one of their own scout out a forum and select a poster to represent the studios interests. They will contact said poster and start feeding them info to pass on to their fellow posters, this is known as a "Contract "Plant". The studio might offer said "Plant" something in return, almost like a fanboy bartering system. Many times the poster is just happy with the new found "Forum-Fame" and will do whatever the studio wants them to. The question is, how do you separate the "Plants" from the "Zombies"? Follow me, I'll show you.

A new poster who just signed up to a forum and starts posting in rather large and cryptic paragraphs about the latest regarding a tentpole film is usually a sure sign of a "Zombie". They say a lot with out saying anything at all. Look for established posters with a large number of posts who have a good following in a certain forum. These are usually the types of posters a studio looks to when selecting a "Contract  Plant". If the new poster seems to know what they are talking about even if they are a "Newbie" poster, check out the screen name. A true "Plant" is going to want to blend in. They won't use a screen name like WBinsider or MarvelDeepThroat. That is almost a sure sign of a "Zombie". True "Plants" will throw out a casting suggestion and move on. They might open a thread about as storyline and just stand by to guage reactions. "Zombies"will hijack the thread turn the thread into a resource to draw in unsuspecting posters, it becomes about them not the news or the posters. "Look at me, look at me!"

A "Zombie" will use words like, "maybe" and "soon". They'll create riddles that could mean anything and leave the posters to solve them. "Zombies" will never give a concrete timetable, or specific news, they leave it open to interpretation. That way if any news happens to leak, they will scream at the top of their forums lungs that they were right all along.  When their info turns out to be bogus, as it usually does, "Zombies" blame Hollywood or point the finger at their sources but will never take the blame. A "Plant" won't be around for the aftermath if they happen to be wrong, they are already laying the foundation for their next assignment. "Plants" will never brag about their careers or tell you what they do. They don't get personal because they can't. This is how their employers want it. A "Zombie" however, will brag about the most mundane of achievements involving Hollywood in order to boost the number of "Zombies" in their brood. Now that you know the difference, let's hope you will be able to spot them and know what to do if you have the misfortune of coming across one.
