Robert Englund talks "Nightmare Remake'

Shocktillyoudrop had a chance to sit down with the original Freddy Kreuger, Robert Englund. When asked if he had a chance to meet Jackie Earle Haley, who has taken over the role from him, he gave a really weird answer "We were supposed to have dinner together and I was going to give him a list of all my favorite film festivals for him to go to in Europe. ‘Robert's Top Five': my favorite little resorts from the southern coast of Spain and stuff. I'm hoping to get him that list anyway, because after wearing the makeup and after doing publicity for the movie it's kind of fun to go over there and have a little bit of distance from the United States, and the hospitality is very wonderful over there. They come at the project with a little bit of a different angle and it's a little bit refreshing. You don't feel like you're repeating yourself quite as much, so I want to give him my Robert Englund's Top Five list of film festivals to go to.

I have no idea why Haley would want a list of film festivals in Europe to visit from his 'Nightmare' predecessor.

When asked if He was excited to see the new 'Nightmare On Elm Street' he also had the following to say, "I'm really curious. I'm a big fan of talented actors and there's some real talented actors in this project. Clancy Brown, Connie Britton from Friday Night Lights. Especially a young actor that I love from The Sarah Conner Chronicleswhich was recently cancelled, Thomas Dekker – I think he's playing the Johnny Depp role, and Jackie. I've been a fan of Jackie's since the early '80s. He did a wonderful film called 'Breaking Away'. In fact, I think if you go back and really watch that movie Jackie's probably the actor who invented the sort of slacker character even before Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and even before Kevin Smith's Clerks. He kind of coined that character and I don't think that he ever got enough credit for that."

Maybe now the "original" Nightmare fanboys will quit their bitching, Englund basically gives his blessing to the cast, Haley included. That's not saying they needed it, or were looking for it, if anything I think the only real blessing they should have been looking for is from Wes Craven the original creator.

Joss Whedon Directing 'The Avengers'

Deadline New York reports that Marvel Studios is moving ahead with Joss Whedon as director of The Avengers. The site says he is now in final negotiations to helm the action adventure scheduled for a May 4, 2012 release.

The film would feature many of the lead actors involved in Marvel Studios adaptations right now, including Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man" films), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and more.

Paramount Pictures will distribute the film, that is for now that's the plan, Disney may decide to change this before the presumed 2012 release date.

Casting Couch: Super Edition

Yes, the casting couch, in its most original design, was supposed to be a weekly article, in which I gave my opinion, and possibly that of TMT as a whole, of whom should be cast in upcoming epic movies. Unfortunately, due to swaying changes both in and out of the TMT world, we had an obvious lapse in our intended continuity. And I missed the opportunity to give my thoughts on Captain America before Chris Evans was announced for the role. (I would have used Thor’s little brother Liam Hemsworth)

So, in an effort to somewhat make amends, I’m tackling the big one. The queen mother of casting dilemmas. Today I cast Superman.

This edition is going to be a little different than the previous, because, one, I’m going to provide three hopefuls for the lead character with a nod to my personal favorite, although it’ll never happen. Then, two, with such an important supporting cast, I’ll give ideas on who should be slotted in those places as well. So, without further ado…

Scott Porter: Most of the masses know him as Jason Street from television’s Friday Night Lights. A few others might have seen him as Rex Racer in The Wachowski Brothers’ Speed Racer. Okay, you’re right. No one saw that. He even did some work on As the World Turns, but we won’t count that against him. Even George Clooney did his time in the soap opera world. Okay, bad analogy. I just remembered that ghastly performance as Batman that Clooney crapped out for us. Anyway, if you’re still not familiar with Porter, you can check out the rest of his acting resumé HERE.

Travis Van Winkle: Funny name. Serious look. This guy’s face is almost too chiseled, but I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. I have to admit that I caught Meet the Spartans on HBO awhile back, and it was then that I noticed Van Winkle for the first time. Well, that and the mediocre performance as that dickhead in 2009’s remake of Friday the 13th. I think that was the actual name for that character. Looking over the rest of his work, which you can do as well HERE , I think if he can shed that frat boy persona that goes hand in hand with his look, which and ACTOR should be able to do, he might really be in the running for this role.

Henry Cavill: If any of you readers follow internet message boards related to casting or movie rumors, which I would expect you do if you’re reading this, you’ll know that Cavill has been a heavy fan favorite for this role even before Brandon Routh was chosen for Returns. I can’t really disagree here. In my opinion, the decision on casting should be even more dependant on acting ability than looks. Yes, there’s a certain amount of importance riding on a basic resemblance to the character, which Cavill meets, but remember, different artist have portrayed Superman with only similar physical attributes over the years. The real constant is his presence. So, we need an actor that can pull off this god-like being that was raised with the most humble morals of middle America. Watch the Tudors and see what you think.

I’ll just quickly mention two other names that I personally wouldn’t mind. Jim Caviezel, in my opinion, would be perfect. Especially if we were to ever see a team up with Christian Bale’s Batman. I’ve been told it’ll never happen with him. The other name, and I’m probably going to be stoned for this, but if they went with the Alex Ross version, I’d suggest Chris Noth. Hell, Routh could even cameo in a flashback. But that’s really reaching on all parts.

Now, on to Luthor. He’s almost as pivotal as Superman, because the ultimate good guy needs the ultimate bad guy to play off. I was actually really excited, when I heard Kevin Spacey had been cast in Returns. He was just given the wrong material. With that said, I’m going to have to cast my vote for Timothy Olyphant. And no, its not just because he played a bald guy in Hitman. Its more for his performance as the villain in Live Free or Die Hard. He was cold, calculating and collected the entire time he was wreaking absolute havoc to the entire country. Plus, he has a naturally sinister look. Even when he’s smiling, he looks like he’s hiding a secret or an ulterior motive. My back up plan on this one would be Olyphant’s co-star in Die Hard, Bruce Willis. Again, this depends on the version of the characters approached by the writers. Also, Nolan nodded to his intentions to mimic Donner’s approach to casting, in that he would pick an unknown for the lead role and surround him by already established stars.

Lois Lane has always been an easy pick for me. Jennifer Morrison, from Fox’s House just embodies that character. And its not just because I dated a girl by the same name in high school, either. She carries a pouty smirk that’s both adorable and irritating, depending upon which end of the conversation you land. She can play the strong, passionate persona without making it feel forced, too. Please, just don’t even argue.

Keeping with the talent of Fox, I’d put Hugh Laurie in the editor’s chair of The Daily Planet as Perry White. You may remember that he was also my pick for J. Jonah Jameson in the Spiderman reboot. After seeing him as a leader and mentor figure on House for so long, I just picture him as the boss. I’m hoping the new film will portray Perry as a little edgier, more influential character, too.

And finally, if it has to be discussed, there’s Clark’s little buddy Jimmy Olson. I’ve got to say, I thought Lois and Clark got it right with their first casting of Jimmy. There’s no need to make him overly annoying. He’s a good use of comedic relief and a source of respect for both Clark and Superman. For that, I’d choose Ben Feldman. He’s kind of a smaller guy and can work well with sarcasm, which would play well with Perry.

I’ve pretty well covered the main characters that we know will be in the film. As more information about the story and the characters involved is released, I’ll revisit this article and possibly add a few more picks for additional characters. I know that this is a touchy subject for many of you. I, just like you, have been following forums for years. And I’ve seen tons of proposals from different fans. These are my picks, but I always love to hear feedback from the readers. Good or bad. So, the shooting gallery is officially open. Bring it on.

In The Heights to Start in August?

Variety is reporting that Universal is moving forward with the film adaptation of In The Heights, with plans to start shooting in New York in August.  The film, based on the hit Broadway musical that won four Tony Awards (including Best Musical) in 2008, centers around the vibrant neighborhood of Washington Heights over a scorching July 4th weekend.

Heights creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will reprise his role from the stage production as Usnavi, the bodega owner whose life may change forever after his store sells a winning lottery ticket.  Universal has picked TMI writer Marc Klein to adapt the script.

Kenny Ortega, of High School Musical fame and countless other musical projects, including Michael Jackson's This Is It, is set to direct.  Coincidentally, HSM's Corbin Bleu is currently playing Usnavi in the Broadway production of In The Heights, and has been getting rave reviews.

I'm very excited for this film.  I saw the show on Broadway last year, and it's one of my favorite musicals of the last few years.  The music is fantastic (it's a mix of hip-hop, salsa, and soul music) and the cast album is still in constant rotation on my iPod.  In fact, I was just listening to it this morning.

I'm also psyched that Lin-Manuel Miranda will get to reprise his role in the film version.  That doesn't always get to happen when a Broadway show makes it to the big screen, but as the creator of the show who originated the role onstage, it's only fair and he deserves it.  I did get to see him in the show just a week before he left the cast, and he was terrific.

Besides, you gotta love a guy who celebrates his Best Original Score Tony win by rapping his acceptance speech.

Yes, it's a musical...but it's a really good musical.  And I think it's in capable enough hands to make a great film.

Razzies Coming to TV Next Year?

Everyone's favorite 'bad' awards show might be headed to TV for the first time next year.

Boosted by the online response to Sandra Bullock's hilarious Razzie acceptance speech for her Worst Actress win in last year's All About Steve (the night before winning her Oscar, no less), the official Golden Raspberry Award Foundation is now looking for a way to get the entire ceremony honoring the worst in film televised.

According to a press release on their official website, the plan is to air the show when the awards are given out - which is usually the night before the Oscar telecast.  They are also developing several other "Razzie-branded properties," although they did not reveal what those properties would be.

I'm not so sure about this plan.  Sure, they've gotten stars like Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry, Ben Affleck and Bill Cosby to actually show up and accept the award, but can they guarantee that anyone else in Hollywood is willing to be a good sport about accepting a 'worst'-anything award?  That might make it a tough sell to advertisers if they can't get too many celebrities to play along.

Also, in the last few years the Razzies have seemed to be less about honoring the worst and more about just giving an excuse to call out current tabloid fodder or stars just that annoy them.  And we already have TMZ doing that job on a nightly basis.

But if they can find a way to make a really funny show that 'honors' some truly bad films that doesn't scare away the people they're trying to honor, it might work.

Conan O'Brien to Host Show on TBS

Comingsoon reports, Conan O'Brien is joining TBS to host a late-night talk show that is expected to debut in November. The Emmy-winning comedian's new program will be followed by "Lopez Tonight," which will shift to a midnight time slot.

O'Brien began talks in earnest with TBS just last week, after George Lopez personally called him to ask that he consider joining the network's late-night line-up. "I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," Lopez said. "It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy."

Said O'Brien: "In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly."

O'Brien will host his hour-long, yet-to-be-titled show Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. (ET/PT).

"Conan has been the comedic voice for a generation. TBS already has a huge audience of young comedy lovers, and Conan's show will give these fans even more reasons to watch our network," said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks.

"For decades, late-night TV has been dominated by broadcast television," Koonin said. "Now, with a young audience and a growing late-night lineup, TBS is set to be the choice of comedy fans for years to come."

Following his brief run on NBC's "The Tonight Show," O'Brien is currently touring the United States and Canada with his live show, "Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour."

Update: Sony Denies Logan Lerman is Spider-Man

Mike Fleming from deadline reports, insiders at Sony say that the young actor is not getting the role. In fact, these sources were very definitive in denying the story, and were sure that Lerman was 100% not going to be Spidey and that he is not on the list of candidates being seriously considered. for the new film that will be directed by (500) Days of Summer helmer Marc Webb. On the other hand, Drew McWeeny is often right about stuff--he was first to accurately note that Fox was eyeing other directors for the X-Men: First Class spinoff film because Bryan Singer had committed to direct Jack The Giant Killer.

Is the Logan Lerman casting, just the same rumor that started back in February, coming back around for a second run? We don't know for sure, it is possible that Sony is denying the rumors until Lerman has signed an official contract, but on the other hand, they could just not be interested in him for the role. If he is in fact up for the role and currently in contract negotiations with Sony, its likely we'll here something sooner then later.

Green Lanterns Suit Will be CG!

Everyone would like to get a look at Ryan Reynolds in costume in the big screen adaptation of DC Comics 'Green Lantern'. Production started earlier this month in New Orleans, and while the first set photos have begun to hit the web — don’t expect to see Reynolds in the green suit. Not today, not next week, not next month, not ever. So don’t expect to see any leaked shots of Reynolds in the actual suit until Warner Bros makes the official full reveal.

Jack Ryan reboot working title 'Moscow'?

Very liitle has been said in regards to the "Jack Ryan" reboot. At least ever since Paramount locked in Chris Pine (Captain Kirk) to take over the franchise from Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck.

Pajiba have some updates on Tom Clancy's CIA hero and his next cinematic undertaking. Surprisingly, the working title for the reboot (the second for the series after Ben Affleck's popular-at-the-time 'Sum of All Fears' from 2002) is Moscow. Certainly not what I was expecting, but I'm sure, or atleast I hope it will change by the time its released.

IESB adds, The script (which apparently shares plot elements from a sold, but unmade spec script titled Dubai – both written by Adam Cozen) involves a pre-CIA assigned Jack employed in Moscow (hence the title?) as a financial advisor for a billionaire. Only things get intense when he uncovers a terrorist plot specifically designed to sink the U.S. economy by his employer. And to make things personal (because it has to be in order to drive our hero), Ryan's wife is taken hostage by the billionaire bastard!

Apparently, there's still no director on-board. Even if there were, Paramount has bigger fish to fry with Pine for the time being. They've got their insanely anticipated Star Trek sequel set for release June 2012. The Abrams follow-up will, no doubt, be one of the killer money-makers two years from now. So they can still take their time finding the suitable helmer for Jack Ryan.

I also hafto say I'd agree with Iesb in that we probably won't be seeing this before 2013.
