The Anderson Chronicles: Batman 3's Villains

In this week’s edition of The Anderson Chronicles I delve into the behind the scenes happenings on Batman 3, and presumably what will be the villains in Nolan's final instalment. I have to say right off the bat I don’t know anything for sure, as I’m sure no one really does at this point. So you should take this almost entirely as speculation.

Two years ago before The Dark Knight was released and before Heath ledger passed on, there was huge buzz in Hollywood about Ledgers performance. It was rumoured he would most definitely be reprising his role as the iconic villain The Joker. Then there was Ledgers death, the hugely successful release of The Dark Knight, and a posthumous Oscar win. After all the smoke had cleared no one, not even Warner Bros themselves was sure that Christopher Nolan would even return to the director’s chair, let alone proceed to re-cast The Joker for Batman 3 presumably as he was intended to appear. Message boards, blogs, and fans everywhere were torn in two different directions. As much everyone loved Ledgers performance there were a few people that felt The Joker was too iconic of a character to be held back regardless of ledgers passing, as sad as it may have been. While everyone else had already decided it would be tasteless to re-cast the character regardless of the fact this soon after. Thankfully Nolan put all the speculation to rest in a recent Interview he did with Empire Magazine. He made it very clear that The Joker will not be re-cast in Batman 3, but that’s not to say they plan to write the character off all together. They could have him mentioned in name only, which I think is a safe bet to say we it's something we “might” see.

Now that we have the whole Joker controversy/speculation recast fiasco out of the way we can look at the most presumably likely villains to appear in Nolan’s final Batman film.

I know the fan favourite right now is Catwoman/Selina Kyle, but that means nothing when it comes to Nolan. He’s said time and time again that he pays no attention to the online community when making decisions (no one tell this to Jett from Batman-On-Film). He does what he feels will work best for the continuity of his story. Would Catwoman work? Sure, but so would a plethora of other villains you could choose from. The thing that makes her the most likely though to be at least one half of the films antagonists is with the death of Rachel in TDK we were left with a void for a love interest. Selina Kyle could serve as a love interest to both Batman and Bruce Wayne, as well as serve an important purpose in the overall plot. The one problem with a character like Catwoman , is she can’t carry an entire film on her own like a different villain such as The Joker could.

Assuming that Catwoman is the most likely to appear, what other villain would work along with her in one film? The almost too obvious choice for everyone seems to be The Riddler. The problem with this is, everyone assumes The Riddler for the wrong reasons. They immediately assume him for his likeness to Joker, and having seen him most recently it seems most logical, while other theorists will tell you can’t include him for this very reason. From the start of this new franchise starting with Batman Begins Nolan has sworn up and down that he wants his “Batman Universe” grounded in reality. That being said it makes it hard to include certain characters from the rouges gallery. The Riddler though, could be handled similarly to Kevin Spacey’s character in Se7en and a lot less like what Jim Carrey did in Batman Forever. You’d be able to maintain the suspension of disbelief in Nolan’s grounded in reality take on Batman, and not interfere with or imitate what ledger did with The Joker.

Even still the problem with this is, Nolan doesn’t do anything in a predictive manner. Aside from the obvious clue at the end of Batman Begins, Nolan’s future plans are rarely ever discussed. The only thing we really know for sure, is he won’t do Mr. Freeze or The Penguin. With Catwoman as the one almost certainty to appear, I’m expecting to see something completely left field and/or a character we haven’t seen adapted for the big screen before. Who would’ve thought we would ever see a realistic approach on Scarecrow or Ras al Ghul before Batman Begins.

The nice thing is we’ll know at the very least who will appear if not be cast for said role before the end of the year. I’m personally expecting to be surprised by what we hear, but you never know maybe Eddie Murphy or Johnny Depp really is the Riddler, and Philip Seymour Hoffman is the Penguin.

Box Office Predictions July 2 - 5

New openings this weekend are the Tween monster Twilight, and Last Airbender from M. Night Shyamalan.

With out a doubt the Tweens will help hugely to push Eclipse further than New Moon which made 709 million world wide. Over the four day weekend expect Eclipse to pull in close 100 million. Paramount was bat shit crazy to put The Last Airbender opening next to twilight, so that will surely hurt the potential boxoffice it "could" have pulled in.

In it's third week the very overrated Toy Story 3 will rake in close to another 38 million beating out Grown Ups which opened just last weekend and should earn another 26 million.

1. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Summit) - $97 million

2. The Last Airbender (Paramount) - $45 million

3. Toy Story 3 (Disney/Pixar) - $38 million

4. Grown Ups (Sony) - $26 million

5. Knight and Day (20th Century Fox) - $13.5 million

6. The Karate Kid (Sony) - $10.5 million

7. The A-Team (20th Century Fox) - $3.7 million

8. Get Him to the Greek (Universal) - $2.8 million

9. Shrek Forever After (DreamWorks Animation/Paramount) - $1.9 million

10. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (Disney) - $1.6 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday for the Box Office estimates from Jen, and again next Wednesday for the predictions.

Next week the Robert Rodriguez produced Predator remake hits the big screen, and Steve Carell plays a super-villain in the animated comedy Despicable Me.

Ashley Greene Is Laughing Out Loud

Well we finally have an "LOL" film, it is only a matter of time before we get "WTF" and "BRB". Maybe they will be the sequels if they haven't already been made. The lovely Ashley Greene, most known for her portrayal of Alice Cullen in the money making and fangirl shaking "Twilight" series, is in negotiations for a role in "LOL" according to THR. She would be joining Demi Moore and Miley Cyrus in what is a remake of a French comedy released "way back" in 2008. They really aren't even waiting or trying anymore are they?

Also in negotiations is "Thomas Jane" most recently of HBO's "Hung", but I'll always think of Jane as "The Punisher". Liza Azuelos is directing the remake which involves a teen girl that going through a breakup with her much more sexually advanced boyfriend while her divorced mother is struggling to pick up the pieces. Miley Cyrus is locked in as the teen girl lead while Moore is playing the mom. Jane would beplaying the father and Greene a high school misfit, who most likely will befriend Cyrus. A little fun fact, Liza Azuelos also directed the original French version. Who says you can't go home?

Edgar Wright Talks "Ant Man"

Edgar Wright the director of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World recently sat down with Box Office Magazine and talked a bit more about the "Ant Man" film he's been developing for Marvel.

I haven't actually started the second draft yet--I'm not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out--but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it's funny, but it's a genre film. It's about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it's within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we've all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I'm not really a multi-tasker--I haven't done anything since Marvel liked our first draft.

I liked Shaun of the Dead, but Hot Fuzz didn't work as well for me, and I'll admit when I first heard about Scott Pilgrim it sounded retarded. But now after seeing a few trailers it looks pretty damn awesome. So I'm on the fence about an Ant Man movie. I don't know the character all that well, and I'm pretty sure general audiences don't either, so it could go either way for me and general audiences alike. Iron Man was a relatively unknown character outside of avid comic book readers, and went on to be a huge success. The question is will Marvel just try to use the same formula that worked there or are they doing something different. By the sounds of things, they're hoping for something similar to Iron Man.

There's a good possibility this could go on to be a huge success, but that's all dependant on who they cast in the lead, and just how funny they make the character. There's a thin line between having a genre film be campy and having "some" humor. On the other hand they could be looking at a huge flop like DC's recent run at a second tier hero with Jonah Hex. Time will tell.

The First "Paranormal Activity 2" Trailer

Well because some of us are not interested in standing in lines with a bunch of tweenieboppers or are just too damn lazy to take our lady friends to the theater, the "Paranormal Activity 2" trailer has found its way onto the interwebs.

I just watched it and now I am hiding under the blankets with a flashlight and my dog hoping for the best while my significant other is sound asleep dreaming of shopping sprees. Check it out below courtesy of the keyboard zombies at Bloody Disgusting. Thanks for scaring the shit out of me Paramount.

Top Gun The Sequel?

MTV recently talked with producer Jerry Bruckheimer about the upcoming The Sourcerers Apprentice and were able to get a bit of information out of him about the possibility of a Top Gun sequel:

"We tried to develop [a sequel] and we couldn't do it-- I was with my partner Don Simpson," Bruckheimer explained. "And then Tom took it over and he tried to develop something and it never quite happened." That's all in the past though. It turns out that "Top Gun" has been the subject of much more recent sequel discussions as well.

"We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet," he continued. "We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it."

If you've been following TMT's podcast, Crashing Hollywood then you know I am gathering quite a list of classic movies that are must see. Now we can add Top Gun to this ever growing list. From friends telling me its one of the great 80's movies and that the soundtrack is one of the best of all time, I believe its well past time to view the original. Either way I'm sure this news of a potential sequel is sure to get fans of the original excited. Everything else is being remade or 'sequeled' so why not this?

The Night Chronicles: Devil To Get An Early Release Date

Shocktillyoudrop.com has reported that The Night Chronicles: Devil directed by John Erick and Drew Dowdle will see an earlier release date than planned. Moved from February 11, 2011, to this years September 17th, Devil is one in a series of horror-thriller styled movies being produced by M. Night Shyamalan. Details about the movie are still being kept tightly hidden from general public at this point.

It will be interesting to see what reaction these movies receive not only in reviews but also at the box office. Lately Shyamalan's films have been a miss with the movie going audience and its hard to say how his Last Airbender will fare going up against the monster hit that is The Twilight Saga.

Exclusive "Last Supper: The Russelville Hacksaw Murders" Casting News!

Sources close to TMT tell us that the production team behind the Halloween Spin off Last Supper: The Russelvile Hacksaw Murders have reached out to cast members of John Carpenter's original Halloween.

Among the Cast rumored to be joining the film is Charles Cyphers, who is in early talks to take on the role of Charlie Bowles father in law. He will not be reprising his role as Sheriff Leigh Brackett, which he portrayed in both Halloween in 78' and Halloween II in 81'.

Officially confirmed is actor Brian Andrews, who played Tommy Doyle in Carpenter's Original and had a a small role in the sequel as well. Unfortunately, he will not be reprising his role, but will cameo in the film.

Last Supper is based on a line of dialogue from John Carpenter’s “Halloween”. In the film Dr. Loomis goes to a cemetery in search of Judith Myers’ grave, the graveyard keeper tells Dr. Loomis a story about Charlie Bowles, while in search of the grave marker, but in the middle of his story he is interrupted by Loomis about Michael Myers and Carpenter’s story of Halloween continues from there. The line of dialogue for reference is as follows:

Every town has something like this happen. I remember a guy over in Russellville. Charlie Bowles. About fifteen year ago, he finished dinner, excused himself from the table, went out into the garage and got a hacksaw, then came back into the house, kissed his wife and two children goodbye, and then proceeded to…

Filming is set to start this October in Fairhope Alabama. Last Supper is being written and Directed by William Sanders and Co-Directed by Christoff Neal, and produced by both JKSR Productions amd Ben Gallaty of Bear Trap Productions.

Also be sure to visit the  Facebook Page and Twitter for Last Supper and JKSR Productions.

Andy Serkis Leading the Rise of the Apes!

Already visualizing in the board-room at 20th Century Fox there’s an old-school movie executive with a big cigar in his mouth giving orders to the pinions beneath him. When someone asks, "Sir, we need an actor who can do the motion-capture work for that Planet of the Apes prequel we’re fast-tracking for next summer."

Is it safe to assume his immediate response is "Get me Andy Serkis!"

If it isn’t, then color me surprised. Via their Twitter account, 20th Century Fox has officially announced the actor (having previously Middle Earth's resident crack-whore Gollum and the King of the Apes himself) will play Caesar, the li'l chimp bastard responsible for the monkey-calypse in Rise of the Apes.

The prequel is scheduled for release June 24, 2011 and I'd be hard-pressed to think of a bigger flop this time next summer. Sorry, folks, but this whole thing is just a bad idea
