Steve Carell Going Dark With 'Foxcatcher'

Steve Carell is heading to the place where many comedic actors have ventured to: dramatic acting.

Like Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, and Will Ferrell before him, Carell will attempt to give a full-fledged, serious role a shot.

Variety reports the former Office star has been picked by director Bennett Miller (the newly released Moneyball) to topline Foxcatcher, the true story of John du Pont, who murdered an Olympic wrestler back in 1996.

Apparently, Miller has been working on this project for nearly four years with scripting duties coming from E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, the duo that wrote his debut feature, Capote.

The film will tell the story of John du Pont (Carell) who, while being both a paranoid schizophrenic and heir to his family's chemical fortune, builds a wrestling gym on his Pennsylvania estate called Team Foxcatcher.  It was there in 1996 that du Pont shot and killed Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler David Schultz in front of Schultz's wife and du Pont's head of security.  du Pont then proceeded to lock himself in his mansion for the next two days while police negotiated his surrender.

This will be quite a turn for Carell as many know him as the lovable idiot, Michael Scott, from TV's The Office, or his comdedic films like The 40-Year Old Virgin and Get Smart.

Filming is expected to get underway in March.

Images From The Avengers

After the underwhelming cover the images from within EW seem to be a lot more exciting, even if they are non SFX related shots from the movie. I particularly like the pic of Black Widow and you know Sam Jackson is gonna love being in on the action at last! Anyway you can check them out below.

Contraband Trailer

This is a remake of an Icelandic film and it looks badass. A no holds barred crime thriller with a bit of flair and plenty of grit. It's tried and tested stuff but when done well that can be enough, and with Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale in the leads I think this will work.

Yahoo! Movies got the trailer scoop.

Chris Farraday long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy, botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs, Chris is forced back into doing what he does best -- running contraband -- to settle Andy's debt. Chris is a legendary smuggler and quickly assembles a crew with the help of his best friend, Sebastian, to head to Panama and return with millions in counterfeit bills.

Things quickly fall apart and with only hours to reach the cash, Chris must use his rusty skills to successfully navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate, and sons become their target.

Rooney Mara May Continue "Female Lead with Issues" Trend with Oldboy Remake

It's a point we've made here at TMT towards Chris Pine, Ryan Reynolds and Sam Worthington. But it just as much applies to Rooney Mara.

After The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens in three months, you're going to hear two possible things said about her from your family, friends and co-workers who see the David Fincher-directed, Daniel Craig-co-starring thriller. Either "Oh my God, I love her!" or "Who?"

If the reception to the film and her performance is the former, then it's all about the next step she takes with that success. Beyond her commitment to playing Lisbeth Salander again, that'll leave an open space (depending on how quickly Sony wants The Girl Who Played with Fire) to make an impression with John & Jane Doe Movie-Goer and show she can play more than her iconic, career-making role and avoid the dreaded trap-falls of type-casting. Like I said...it's something we've harped on multiple times about a number of actors.

Twitch says one such project that could serve that agenda is Spike Lee's American remake of Oldboy with Josh Brolin in the lead. Word from their sources (and before anyone starts mouthing off to their detriment, they were the guys who broke that both Lee and Brolin were up for it – thus adding legitimacy to this news-item) is Mara's name has been bantered about for the female lead and if you've seen the 2003 Korean film then the phrase "Oh boy..." comes to mind.

It would most definitely be a different kind of part compared to Salander but continue to show Mara can go to dark places as an actor.

The Avengers First-Look - An Exercise in Bad Photoshop

UPDATE: Now with non-shitty/non-photoshop pictures of the actors and helmer/geek god Joss Whedon on set in laughing and action-figure posing mode (in green-screen too!) Also via EW and seeing all this still doesn't muster up much of a reaction from me. I am a DC guy after all...

I want you kids to close your eyes, clear your mind and think back to when you first saw how Rooney Mara was going to look as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Andrew Garfield as the new Spider-Man and Henry Cavill as the new Superman. Those first-looks of them in character looked great, didn't they?

Now open your eyes to a big surprise this morning. Marvel/Disney has dropped our first glimpse of The Avengers, the big superhero team-up shindig that opens the 2012 summer movie season next May, in the latest issue of EW.

It looks pretty shitty, doesn't it? The wonders of bad photoshop at work here with those always-weird looking necks attached to the actor's heads and Marc Ruffalo playing Derek Zoolander as Bruce Banner.

Way to make a great first impression, fellas. For the first time (in quite awhile), it looks like Warner Brothers/DC might have bested Marvel at something.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Poster And Trailer

This is a Christmas Day release with two big Hollywood stars in Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock (With a hairstyle from the 40's) in it, however the trailer pretty much indicates that the lead of the movie is the young boy, played by Thomas Horn.

The story is a real tearjerker as the boys father (Hanks) dies in the 9/11 tragedy and leaves both wife and son distraught, however the son sets out on a journey to find whatever it is a key his father left him opens.

It's hard to tell is this will be very corny or uplifting, though it also looks perhaps too sad to be suited to a Christmas Day release.

New Paranormal Activity 3 Trailer

Just when I think I've had enough of this franchise, they yank me back in.  Actually, from what we can see in this new trailer for Paranormal Activity 3, people are going to get yanked all over the place - violently and often.  Considering that Paranormal Activity 2 seemed like an endless loop of watching a pool cleaner moving around by itself on a home security video, color me impressed that they seem to be bringing some major jump-out-of-your-seat scenes this time around.

I also have a feeling that even if the movie stinks (which is likely), it will still be worth going to an opening night show just to hear the audience freak out.

Paranormal Activity 3 opens in theaters on October 21.

Another Real Steel Clip!

The movie is getting very positive early reviews and here is another fun scene. You know when you order an item and it looks great and the price is reasonable, then it arrives and something if slightly off? well that's this scene.

I really like the chemistry in the scenes I've seen so far between Jackman, Lilly and the kid, and this scene with the three of them in together plays well, check it out below and the movie when it opens on  October 7th.

Kristen Stewart Becomes A Knight!

Ok I'm not sure if that is strictly true but in that armour she looks like Aragorn in ROTK if Aragorn was a pasty, thin young girl. Kristen Stewart is actually a good young actress as her indie work has shown, but she gets a lot of stick because of Twilight, a franchise that as many people hate as love, and because she is awkwardly nervy in interviews. This project is another potential blockbuster franchise and hopefully will do better critically for her than the often panned Twilight.

Of the two Snow White movies currently being made this one "Snow White and The Huntsman" seems far the more interesting to me, with Chris 'Thor' Hemsworth as The Hunstman training Snow White so she can fend off the evil Queen played by Charlize Theron.

War horse Poster

It's been a while since the master Steven Spielberg bestowed a movie on us and suddenly he has two coming out in the final quarter of this year, it's like that old cliche about buses.

One is Tintin which my interest is 50/50 for and the other is War horse, which looks to be a classic bit of sentimental Spielberg with stunning cinematography. Truthfully I'm more interested in his 2013 offering Robopocalypse but for now War Horse shall do when it's released this Christmas.

EW got the scoop on the poster.
