Hugh Jackman Takes a "Fantastic Voyage"?

The pairing of Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy on this fall's Real Steel sounds like it may have turned out to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.  Not only are they already planning to re-team on a sequel to their robot-boxing action flick, which opens in theaters on October 7, but according to a Deadline report today, Levy is hoping that Jackman will star in his upcoming remake of Fantastic Voyage.

The original Fantastic Voyage, which was released in 1966 and for some reason forced viewing for elementary school science classes back in the 1980s (at least it was for me), was about a science team who is miniaturized along with their itty-bitty submarine and injected into the body of a wounded diplomat.  From there they have about an hour to repair the guy's blood clot before they turn back into their normal size.  Yeesh.

Naturally, the 21st century version of Voyage will be receiving the 3D treatment (flying blood cells!  um, yay?), courtesy of producer James Cameron.  So, at least there's a good chance that the 3D won't suck.  The new script, written by Shane Salerno, is said to now include a love story.  Love among the arteries, isn't that sweet?

Now, the film is still not officially greenlit and Jackman, who starts a two-week concert gig at San Francisco's Curran Theater tomorrow night, is not yet officially involved.  But with The Wolverine still without a director, and a few months to wait until we find out if Real Steel is still as big of a hit as Dreamworks is betting on, it could be a good project for both of them in the meantime.
