Movie Moan's Summer 2014 Box Office Predictions Special

Movie Moan is back!............because we never left you.

Our podcast returns for a near four hour epic comeback special as we bring you the show you love the most out of the entire year; the Box Office prediction game.

And as always, you don't have to listen to us ramble on for the sake of it.  You get to take part in the action.

So get your game faces on and join your regular Movie Moan competitors Phil Gee, Jamie Williams, ComingSoon.net's Ed Douglas, and BoxOffice.com's Shawn Robbins as we predict the US domestic box office on most of Summer 2014's big movies, and how much they will make up the cut off date of September 1st.

If you want to take part and potentially be a 'web winner' then all you need to do is put out your own predictions in the comments section.  Just lay them out by film title in the following order with your prediction next to it:

    1. The Amazing Spider-man 2
    2. Neighbours
    3. Godzilla
    4. X-Men: Days Of Future Past
    5. Maleficent
    6. A Million Ways To Die In The West
    7. Edge Of Tomorrow
    8. How To Train Your Dragon 2
    9. 22 Jump Street
    10. Transformers; Age Of Extinction
    11. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
    12. Jupiter Ascending
    13. Hercules
    14. Guardians Of The Galaxy
    15. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    16. The Expendables 3

Best of Luck!  We'll see you in September for the results.

Hey Phil, are you guys going to do an X-Men Movie Retrospective Podcast? :)

    04-13-2014 | Unregistered CommenterRobb

    ASM 2: $280M
I'm hoping big on this one. It could overblow tracking or fizzle out, either way it comes down to Sony's aggressive marketing campaign.
    Neighbours: $110M
It'll be grand, will reach wide demo.
    Godzilla: $176M
Rise of the Apes is my basis for this. Will hold strong it seems despite X-Men.
    X-Men: $250M
Gonna be BIG! This could be the surprise mega-hit of the Summer. Huge scale, star-power and early buzz is great.
    Maleficent: $115M
Will be very frontloaded and will fizzle out I think.
    AMWTDITW: $160M
Trailer is getting positive reactions from audiences, but conceit will hurt it I think.
    EOT: $75M
Tough to market to be fair, Tom Cruise is the only thing here that will make it money (albeit little).
    HTTYD 2: $325M
Biggest film of the summer. That is all.
    22 Jump Street: $185M
Sequel bump will be there for sure, but I feel it might be a bit underwhelming.
    TRANS4MERS: $275M
Lowest grossing domestic (franchise fatigue), but could still reach $1 billion thanks to China.
    DOTPOTA: $185M
Solid sequel bump here, could very well reach $200M. No other big July releases.
    Jupiter Ascending: $55M
    lol.
    Hercules: $120M
    Rock star-power... and that's it.
    GOTG: $170M
Marvel brand will help but strong marketing will propel for solid numbers.
    TMNT: $125M
I don't know what the first teaser is trying to market here. Michael Bay? Humor? Darkngritty? Shrek turtles?
    Expendables 3: $75M
    Who cares anymore?

As usual, a fantastic show, guys! I’ve been waiting for this!

    1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $236m
    2. Neighbors - $130m
    3. Godzilla - $184m

    9. 22 Jump Street - $143m
    10. Transformers: Age Of Extinction - $293m
    11. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes - $202m

    14. Guardians Of The Galaxy - $150m
    15. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - $77m

You're back, yay! At the risk of sounding pathetic and lifeless (which I am) I've been checking every Monday waiting for this show. But as I haven't even heard of some of these movies much less seen trailers of them yet, I'm going to have to wait to put up predictions till later this week.

Btw, Phil, sorry for the rudeness you experienced at Box Office Forums - making fun of your voice, really? So totally uncalled for for them to do that. I could understand them poking fun of some of the predictions, but yeesh.

    04-16-2014 | Unregistered Commentershelly

    Entertaining show everyone!

It's always interesting listening to everyone's thought processes even more than the number you all arrive at.

Heeding the mantra, never underestimate the power of a family movie, How To Train Your Dragon 2 should reign supreme at the Box Office.

All right, first time ever I'm jumping in, and I have to add, I generally don't follow box office numbers on a daily/weekly basis. Thankfully, a lot of these are sequels though (which is typical of Hollywood nowadays) so I'm basing most of the numbers on my expectations, gut feelings, marketing, and the numbers the previous movies did in franchises. I guess that's kinda what you guys do too though haha. Let's see then:

    1. The Amazing Spider-man 2 $265 million
    2. Neighbours $70 million
    3. Godzilla $190 million
    4. X-Men: Days Of Future Past $300 million
    5. Maleficent $215 million
    6. A Million Ways To Die In The West $103 million
    7. Edge Of Tomorrow $79 million
    8. How To Train Your Dragon 2 $285 million
    9. 22 Jump Street $113 million
    10. Transformers; Age Of Extinction $299 million
    11. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes $205 million
    12. Jupiter Ascending $70 million
    13. Hercules $55 million
    14. Guardians Of The Galaxy $180 million
    15. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles $115 million
    16. The Expendables 3 $80 million

Ok everyone, go easy on Gotcha all you've have me to answer to :). We've got a first timer here. Welcome to the fight and we're honoured to have you here.

@Shelly - Making sure we have new content to entertain 'you' is what keeps driving me forward. I hope we make it worth the wait and the F5 page refreshes. And you're concern is very much appreciated.

@Everyone - Again folks, superb turnout for the results. I think there's a few more coming though. Am I right?

    04-19-2014 | Unregistered CommenterPhil Gee

Long time listener, first time caller...

    1. The Amazing Spider-man 2- $190m I don't think anyone is calling just how far this movie drops from the last one.
    2. Neighbours- $105m
    3. Godzilla- $220m
    4. X-Men: Days Of Future Past- $180m I think this Singer coverage might hurt X Men.
    5. Maleficent- $185m
    6. A Million Ways To Die In The West- $67m
    7. Edge Of Tomorrow- $82m
    8. How To Train Your Dragon 2- $220m
    9. 22 Jump Street- $162m
    10. Transformers: Age Of Extinction- $250m
    11. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes- $150m
    12. Jupiter Ascending- $145m I'll call a surprise mid level hit.
    13. Hercules- $90m
    14. Guardians Of The Galaxy- $215m This looks as fun as hell, plus it's Marvel. Gangbusters, this one.
    15. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- $63m
    16. The Expendables 3- $40m And judging by Stallone and Schwarzennegger's current appeal, i wouldn't surprise me if it does less.

Neighbors - $130 million (surprisingly 100% fresh at RT right now)
    Godzilla - $170 million

    Maleficient - $140 million
    A Million Ways...-$80 million
