Movie Moan - BROUGHT TO YOU BY DELICIOUS CINNABON
Mon, November 11, 2013
This week, in what must be the most exclusive advance review we've ever had on our show, Gabe Toro, film critic for The Playlist and Jump Cut Junkies, give us his thoughts on 'The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty'. The only way to make the film seem less horrendous than it sounds is to make sure our podcast contains more product placement than the movie itself.
Elsewhere, it's an amazing ensemble of talent this week showing up Phil and Jamie as we are joined once again by Spencer Perry of Superhero Hype, and celebrate the long awaited return of The Weekend Warrior himself Mr Ed Douglas. Together, we deliver the most in-depth roundtable discussion you can get for 'Thor: The Dark World', belatedly and bravely assert that 'Gravity' is not a film for the ages, just a film for the theatre, some members of the show are chastised for wasting their time on the 'Man Of Steel' live non-event, and find time to cover the sad news over 'Tomorrowland's move to Summer 2015 (yeah, fuck that other Disney movie that was in the news this week).
And back to that Walter Mitty review, that's just the tip of the cinnabon. Gabe also has some choice words for the 'journalists' who called him a sourpuss that ain't down with the young groove something or other. Keep listening and it'll all make sense.
I think!

Note: The play version only goes up to the first hour for some reason but the downloadable version should work fine.

The THOR discussion was a classic. I really dug the film, but I would certainly agree that it’s lower-tier Marvel… but even lower-tier Marvel is still highly entertaining.
Phil, you are not alone in your thoughts on Thor The Dark World. I truly think that it is the worst Marvel Studios film to date. While you articulated perfectly as to why you disliked it in the last episode, allow me to take a different strand on why it is a bad movie. While Alan Taylor does broaden the universe visually in this film, I feel that is all he does and the way the film is composed and edited, all its dramatic juice is sucked out of it utterly.
At least with the first movie, there was dramatic core and conflict, as opposed to the sequel where Marvel get pretty annoying in their humour is grounding mantra. Branagh`s approach with the first film was more interesting to me, he treated the material with a level of seriousness that made you believe in the world of Asgard but was not afraid to make fun of it via the humour. The humour not only working on an fish out of water level but also a rift on the Twilight as well as camping up the material like Branagh did in his adaptation of Frankenstein.
The humour in Dark World was excessive and clashed with the tone of the serious moments. I think the reception of this film shows that people are just defending the enterprise of Marvel and what they are doing as opposed to look at the product in of itself. All I can in the way of good is that the film to me had a theme of sacrifice but it is not interested in developing it that all that much. Never fear, a fellow Brit shares your sentiments on this movie, keep up the great on the podcast.
It's lovely to get such a comment Sartaj. Literally, you are the only person I have encoutered who agrees with me. Apparently we are asking too much for something better.
Both the Sound Cloud and download version both end at 1:09:42 right before the Gravity discussion starts.
