Movie Moan: Do Androids Dream Of First Class Damn Dirty Apes: Ghost Protocol - Part 12

The deluge of unnecessary sequels that is the current Hollywood trend has even spread to our own podcast this week. We're so swamped talking about unoriginal films that we don't have time for our usual 'moan of the week'.
However, Phil brings you his exclusive (in only that you Yanks don't get to see it till December for some reason) review of Steven Spielberg's 'The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn'.
The official Movie Moan countdown to Bond 23 (now officially titled 'Skyfall') begins and Phil and Jamie couldn't be happier. Ridley Scott's return to 'Blade Runner' for an official sequel is the only reason we would want to talk about it. The sequel to 'X-Men: First Class' attempts to join the 'G.I.Joe: Retaliation' school of follow ups to first films that didn't do very well at the box office. We discuss the new trailers for 'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol' and '21 Jump Street' (with divisive opinions all around).
Finally, the sequel to 'Rise Of The Apes' is officially on the way. No doubt, the official title will be 'Before The Planet Of The Apes' or 'Damn Dirty Apes' or 'Virus Of The Apes' or 'Wrath Of The Apes' or 'Apes II: Banana Boogaloo' or....

Ok, I gotta chime in here.
The one thing I've noticed about Jamie is that he's often if not all the time the biggest perpetrator of his own accusations.
What he said about MI4( I film I really don't care for myself). Fans are rooting for it when in reality it looks like just another trailer. And that people often judge films poorly or enthusiastically based on some form of agenda. umm, go back and re-listen the coverage you guys gave on the super bowl spots. I mean my god. It's basically what internet blogging is all about lives on.
Wanting films to succeed based on what you guys perceived as some sort of cred merit. Super 8 was the darling of that pre-season cause most of you people have/had a jones for either or both of the the creative heads on that project and what the film represented in light of the evil Michael bay and his ilk. The film came out and the truth was revealed. It wasn't anything to write home about.
My point, you guys and Jamie in particular do this more than you know, and that's just the beginning.
speaking of MI4.
I'm calling it now, it's biggest critique will be that it had too much going on. And phil will get into one of his calm never rants about "remember when spy films were simple to follow...etc" It looks like 2 films put into one. Hopefully it does well.
Secondly, as far as First Class. I'm sorry but the word of mouth was absolutely nothing but positive for this film. I'm not sure I heard anyone say don't watch it but rather, hey you gotta see it. Absolutely everyone. It was basically planet of the apes but without the surprise and without the low budget and lack of competition. It far and away had better "word of mouth" than the other marvel films this year. I mean seriously champion them all you want(phil) but there were tons of legitimate flaws the public had with them. They made as modest returns as they did and on their merit alone. For example the action in cap(compared to XFC)..etc. First Class had great word of mouth it just had a lot going against it including (a the move fox thought would help but really hurt) being tied to the previous films. Jamie hit the nail on the head. Batman had no competition when it came out. And it coasted moderately to it's moderate success that year. Something the far more entertaining sequel rectified. XFC is the Begins of it's franchise and a superior sequel to a film the audience has learned to trust again would do very strong numbers.
As for where the franchise can go, phil is right Vaughn already proved he is willing to make changes when the need arises and so is Fox, I mean have you guys actually seen Origins? As for Apocalypse, he doesn't need look any more or less wonky than a transformer or lord of the rings final villain. Vaughn is good that way.
peace.
No Jamie! Don't watch Jack & Jill! It's suicide!
