"The Devil's Double" Poster

Based on a gripping, unbelievable true story of money, power and opulent decadence, Lionsgate’s The Devil's Double takes a white-knuckle ride deep into the lawless playground of excess and violence known as Bagdad, 1987. Summoned from the frontline to Saddam Hussein’s palace, Iraqi army lieutenant Latif Yahia (Dominic Cooper) is thrust into the highest echelons of the “royal family” when he’s ordered to become the ‘fiday’ – or body double – to Saddam’s son, the notorious “Black Prince” Uday Hussein (also Dominic Cooper), a reckless, sadistic party-boy with a rabid hunger for sex and brutality. With his and his family’s lives at stake, Latif must surrender his former self forever as he learns to walk, talk and act like Uday. But nothing could have prepared him for the horror of the Black Prince’s psychotic, drug-addled life of fast cars, easy women and impulsive violence. With one wrong move costing him his life, Latif forges an intimate bond with Sarrab (Ludivine Sangier), Uday’s seductive mistress who’s haunted by her own secrets. But as war looms with Kuwait and Uday’s depraved gangster regime threatens to destroy them all, Latif realizes that escape from the devil’s den will only come at the highest possible cost.

Weekend Box Office: June 17 - 19

Courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

1.  Green Lantern - $53.1 million

2.  Super 8 - $21.4 million

3.  Mr. Popper's Penguins - $18.4 million

4.  X-Men: First Class - $11.9 million

5.  The Hangover Part II - $10 million

6.  Kung Fu Panda 2 - $9 million

7.  Bridesmaids - $7 million

8.  Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - $6.6 million

9.  Midnight in Paris - $4.8 million

10.  Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer - $2.1 million

Well...that could have gone better.  Green Lantern, Warner Bros' massively-budgeted attempt to start a big franchise with a DC Comics character who is not Superman or Batman fell a bit flat this weekend, earning a so-so $53.1 million.  That's behind the opening weekends of Thor's $65 million (which, like Green Lantern, had the benefit of 3D), and X-Men: First Class' $55 million (which did not have 3D).  More alarming was the 22% drop from Friday to Saturday, which meant word-of-mouth just wasn't very good, and doesn't bode well for next weekend, when Cars 2 arrives to drive off with the family crowd.

I liked Green Lantern.  Not as much as First Class (my favorite of the summer so far) or Thor, but it was fun and it certainly wasn't the abomination most of the mainstream critics made it out to be.

It wasn't such a great weekend for Jim Carrey, either, as Mr. Popper's Penguins opened with a lackluster $18.4 million.  That movie couldn't even surpass last week's champ, Super 8, which held up well in its second weekend with $21.5 million.  That's only a 39% drop from last week, which would indicate that word of mouth is good for this one, and even though it won't be breaking any box office records, it seems to be the go-to movie for audiences who are sick of 3D and superheros.

In its third weekend, X-Men: First Class grossed an $11.9 million, bringing it to $120 million stateside, making it so far the lowest-grossing film of the series.  Sigh.  Worldwide, the movie has made $282 million.

The Hangover Part II has officially become the highest-grossing film of 2011, adding $10 million to bring its domestic total up to $223 million.  Pirates 4 is the 2011 runner-up with $220 million, and worldwide the movie has made a staggering $952 million.  I liked Pirates 4, but seriously...that is just insane.  Expect Transformers and Harry Potter to push both of thos films out of the way in the next few weeks.

Next weekend, Lightning McQueen and Mater return in Cars 2, which is already getting some nice early reviews.  Will Pixar have another hit?  Of course they will, why do we even ask this question anymore?  Also, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, will start up their IMAX screenings even earlier now (if they bump up this release any more, they'll have the DVD out before it hits theaters), with IMAX showings now starting at 9pm on June 28.  I'm sure the decision to give it an early start had nothing to do with this looming to take over a mere two weeks later.  Nothing whatsover.

"Puss In Boots" Poster & Trailer

Yahoo Movies was taken over by the suave and sarcastic feline "Puss In Boots" today as the site revealed both the new poster and the trailer from the spinoff of the "Shrek" series.

Funny, I was just talking to TMT's own Jamie Williams about the series via phone and we were wondering if a "Puss In Boots" film needed all nine lives to make an impact on the general public.

It's obvious that the general public got sick of "Shrek", use the google machine and check out the numbers yourself. You can do it, I have faith in you. Not saying "Shrek 4" was horrible, but based on the numbers it is easy to see that interest went the way of the dogs as the series went on.

The character of Puss In Boots was used well and perfectly played in "Shrek 2", but if you care to watch the 3rd and 4th installments, the cat might as well have been put in a hat. He had nothing to do and became lost in the rest of his animated brethren.

You already saw the poster above, watch the trailer below.

The Muppets Trailer (Seriously, the real one!)

First they spoofed romantic comedies.  Then it was The Hangover.  This past weekend, it was the Green Lantern's turn.  Finally, we now have the official trailer for The Muppets, which opens in theaters this Thanksgiving.

Mahna-Mahna!  Haha...this looks like it will be a nice mix of (hopefully) introducing the characters to a new generation of fans, as well as a welcome, long overdue return of the Muppets for those of us who grew up with The Muppets.  I even had a Pigs in Space lunchbox in first grade.

The Muppets opens in theaters on November 23.

'The Dark Knight Rises' Teaser Trailer?

ComicBookMovie.com as apparently got their hands on a bootleg teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, playing somewhere internationally.  While they do stress the possibility that it may indeed be fake, it's hard to judge, which is why a question mark still remains in the title of this story.

Judge for yourself below:

Tom Cruise Wants to Know What Love Is

That's actually kinda cool.  Courtesy of Deadline, we have our first look of Tom Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages.  Directed by Hairspray's Adam Shankman, Rock of Ages is an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical about the denziens of Sunset Strip nightclub in the 1980s.  Cruise's character is the egomaniac (read: jerk) lead singer of the rock band Arsenal, who agrees to play the band's final show at the club to save it from destruction at the hands of a greedy developer.

If the movie sticks to the songs from the show, we'll get to hear Cruise sing such 80s hits as "Wanted Dead or Alive," "I Want to Know What Love Is," "Come On Feel the Noise," and "Heat of the Moment."  That could be...interesting, to say the least.  But the picture looks promising:

Rock of Ages opens in theaters on June 1, 2012.  In addition to Cruise, the movie also stars Diego Boneta, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, and Mary J. Blige.
