Priest

Earlier today, fellow TMT writer Dan Scaglione posted the redband trailer of Legion, starring Paul Bettany and directed by Scott Stewart.  The above teaser is from the duos next project together, Priest.

Priest is an adaptation of a manga comic where man and vampire have been at war for centuries.  Paul's character is a warrior priest who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

Joining Paul in the cast is Cam Gigandet as a young wasteland sheriff who is part vampire, and Maggie Q as a priestess vampire hunter just as badass as the Priests.

Personally I always dig stories like this, and I'm liking the cast so far.  Is it me, or is there  atrend starting here with Legion, Magdalena, and Priest all heading to theater's?

Priest is expected to open August 13th 2010

DeLorean biopic driving towards the big screen!

It was the dream car of many of us 80's kids, ok that was partly because the version of it we fell in love with could travel through time, but never the less the DeLorean posters adorned many a bedroom wall and now it's getting it's own biopic, well the guy who invented it is but that's splitting hairs.

Alex Holmes has been tapped to steer a biopic of car designer John DeLorean that Time Inc. Studios and XYZ Films will produce.

Holmes, who most recently wrote and directed the HBO and BBC miniseries "House of Saddam," developed the DeLorean script with co-writer Rob Warr. They had previously collaborated on the BBC TV series "Dunkirk."

The DeLorean film will tell the story of how the auto industry maverick's glamorous life came crashing down when he was caught in an FBI drug trafficking sting, only to be acquitted on grounds of entrapment.

Holmes envisions the pic as a crime thriller with a tragic hero at its heart.

"As a kid, John DeLorean seemed an almost mythic figure to me. His dreams brought him head to head with both the British and American establishment, and they destroyed him," Holmes said.

The producers behind the pic are working closely with DeLorean's son Zachary DeLorean, the executor of the DeLorean estate. Film is also based on the carmaker's unpublished memoirs, articles from Fortune and Time, as well as Hillel Levin's book "Grand Delusions."

Time Inc. Studios prexy Paul Speaker; XYZ partners Nate Bolotin, Nick Spicer and Aram Tertzakian; and Tamir Ardon, who is also producing a docu on DeLorean, will produce the pic. Time Inc. Studios is the video and film production arm of Time Inc.

The project is racing to get to the bigscreen before other DeLorean pics, including one from Brett Ratner that James Toback is scripting and Robert Evans is producing, and another from David Permut based on life rights from DeLorean's longtime attorney, Mayer Morganroth.

"There are other producers out there trying to make a movie about my father," said Zachary DeLorean, "but this is the only one I'm standing behind, and the only one the DeLorean estate is allowing."

All joking aside this could be pretty interesting and entertaining stuff, it will certainly be interesting to see how much of the film is dedicated to the famous car and it's big screen life as part of one of the 80's biggest franchises.

"Criminal Macabre" set up at Universal

Variety reports that another of Dark Horse's properties has been picked up by a studio, this time Universal:

Universal Pictures has acquired "Criminal Macabre," the Dark Horse Entertainment comicbook miniseries created by Steve Niles. Kyle Ward has been set to write the script.

Story centers around a supernatural detective who doubles as hitman, taking out all the vampires, ghosts and other unsavory monsters who live among humans, hiding in the shadows by day and emerging at night.

The description doesn't really highlight anything that sets this apart from similar stories in the genre, but if executed well it could still be an entertaining slice of action horror.

Dorian needs some of Oil of Olay in new poster

Another retelling of the tale of the classic literary character is on it's way starring Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian) and EMPIRE have nabbed the poster for it. Now given the artistic oppertunities the tale of Dorian Gray affords I think this is a fairly bland and uninspired poster that comes off more like an ad for skin care than anything.

Superman On Trial

As Superman sleeps in his silver Mylar bed at his Fortress of Solitude dreaming of a Lois and Lana catfight, the battle rages on in court between the Siegels and Warner Bros/DC Comics. In another victory for the Siegels and their representative Mark Toberoff, the family has re-acquired the rights to additional Superman material. According to The Trades, the heirs to co-creator Jerry Siegels now own the rights to; two weeks of Superman newspaper comic strips, along with parts of some Action Comics and Superman related comic books.

What does this all mean? The Siegels now own the rights to most of Superman's origin that we are familiar with from the comics and the Donnverse. This includes; Superman's Kryptonian parents, infant Kal-El, the explosion of Krypton, the infant Kal-El being sent from Krypton in a ship, and infant Kal-El crash landing on earth. This is in addition to their ownership of Action Comics #1 which was awarded to the Siegels in 2008. That previous ruling allows them rights to reporter Clark Kent, reporter Lois Lane, their jobs at the Daily Planet working for an obsessive editor, and the romantic dyanmic between Lois, Clark, and Superman.

DC still owns some other elements including; Superman's flying ability and other powers, additional origin elements, Kryptonite, Jimmy Olsen, and Lex Luthor. Warner Bros and DC Comics seem to be staying even keel in regards to the outcome so far.

"Warner and DC Comics are pleased that the court has affirmed that the vast majority of key elements associated with the Superman character that were developed after Action Comics No. 1 are not part of the copyrights that the plaintiffs have recaptured and therefore remain solely owned by DC Comics."

According to previous court documents, DC Comics has received $12.1 million under the terms of its film agreement with Warner Bros for the release of 2006's Superman Returns. The 12.1 million dollars payed out from Warner Bros. to DC Comics along with the initial payment made to DC Comics by Warner Bros of 1.5 Million totals 13.6 million dollars. What this means under the terms of the agreement is that any compensation that was due to DC Comics from Warner Bros between 2003 and 2023 has been covered by the payment of 12.1 million made by Warner Bros to DC Comics for Superman Returns. Due to this completion of compensation, DC Comics is locked into an agreement with Warner Bros for film rights for the next 21 years. This prevents DC Comics from partnering with any other studio to develop a Superman film.

Due to the lack of reversion clause in the contract between WB and DC, the court previously ruled as below:

"Given that the potential for said commencement of filming exists at the present time, plaintiffs have not shown that the Superman film agreement, sans a reversion clause, is below the reasonable range for what a willing buyer would pay for the property from a willing seller. If, however, by 2011, no filming has commenced on a Superman sequel, plaintiffs could bring an accounting action at that time to recoup the damages then realized for the Superman film agreement's failure to contain a reversion clause."

As long as filming has started on a new Superman film by 2011, the film agreement between WB and DC would remain in tact for close to the next 20 years. The question is, would this prevent the Siegels approaching another studio to make a Superman film using the elements that they now have the rights to? I guess the Siegels could always come out with a comic book depicting a 30's version of Superman jumping around after crash landing from Krypton. When this is all said and done, the parties will settle. Until then, good like deciphering the legal speak.

Jason Patric the reluctant villain

Jason Patric who plays the villain in next years The Losers took the part reluctantly according to an interview he did with Variety

Here's a small quote:

"Let's face it, the geeks have inherited the world, and if you want to be a player in this system, you have to be willing to do some of this," Patric acknowledged. "But I wouldn't do 'The Losers' if it wasn't interesting to me as an actor."

It seems to be that he's more or less thumbing his nose at the idea of being in a comic book movie.  Which, let's not forget in the past decade or so have had some of the most critical and commercial successes in Hollywood.  It was just 2008, when Iron Man and The Dark Knight seemingly raised the stakes for all to folow.

I wonder, was Speed 2: Cruise Control really all that interesting as an actor?  Hopefully his seeming nonchalance toward the property doesn't affect hs performance.

New 'Zombieland' Poster

Coming Soon has unveiled the new poster for the fun-looking horror-comedy 'Zombieland'. Judging from the expression on Woody Harrelson's face, it appears that he had a blast making this flick........Or perhaps he's smirking over the irony of a movie sporting a 'Nut Up Or Shut Up' tag line would star a guy named Woody.

‘Legion’ Trailer Descends Upon The Earth

The red band trailer for Legion has hit the Internet bringing forth images of a demonic ice cream man, a machine gun toting angel, and one foul mouthed granny doing a spider walk that would make Peter Parker proud.

The Scott Stewart helmed film centers on legions of angels who are given the apocalyptic mission to exterminate mankind after God (finally) gets fed up with all of our bullshit.

Humanity’s only hope comes in the form of Michael (portrayed by Paul Bettany), a lone wingless angel who takes it upon himself to defend a remote truck stop's waitress (Adrianne Palicki) who just happens to be pregnant with the messiah.

The film also stars Dennis Quaid, Charles S. Dutton, Kate Walsh, Tyrese Gibson, and Kevin Durand as the archangel Gabriel.

Legion gets released on January 22nd, 2010.
