Here's the press release:

Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull in the studio's highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed "The Red Skull". The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

His other film credits include starring in V FOR VENDETTA, THE MATRIX franchise, and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios' THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Which Team Will You Be On?

Over all, I’m a pretty cynical guy. I admit it. I come over as abrasive and rude, even in the rare occasions when I’m not necessarily trying to be. Along with that, I’m heavily critical about other people’s ideas. That goes especially for movies, which, honestly works in my favor, because I can take a comedic approach to ripping a new one into everyone’s favorite films. Its as close to my heart as opening day of Major League Baseball is to many of you. You know, America’s Past Time and all of that. With that said, I’m gonna’ vent a little.

Hollywood, as it does, is taking an idea, and hammering it into the ground like Uncle Ronnie putting the stake in the lawn for the bad mitten net at every family reunion. The problem is, they’ve yet to prove that this is a good idea. Hopefully, they won’t smash they’re thumbs like Ronnie. It hurts and leaves a lingering problem for later down the road.

Yes, I’m getting to a point. Apparently, the studios are loving this idea of mercenary teams ravaging the silver screen. There’s a certain delicate mesh of all things needed to make a film with multiple lead characters work. Of course, the same standards apply. Good material for the talent. Good talent. And, for this type of film, I think brand recognition is important. You also need a decent balance of characters and a well integrated sense of chemistry between them.

So far on the slate, we have the appropriate titled The Losers, which, as Jen pointed out in the Box Office Report, has tanked since opening weekend. Next will be The A-Team. This is where brand recognition comes into play. Even if you never watched the 80’s hit TV show, you can’t go to the local five and dime and not run into at least one person that knows the phrase “I pity the fool”, and another person to laugh at it. That’s a foundation upon which you can build. Plus, you have the draw of names like Liam Neeson for quality acting and Bradley Cooper for the ladies. No offense Brad. We’ll have to see how well MMA star Quinton “Rampage” Jackson does in the role of B.A. Barakus. But speaking of star power, the third, yes third similarly plotted film of the same summer will probably get some attention, mainly from the older crowd, because of its cast made up of a whole slew of 80’s action stars mixed in with a few name actors, who have more recently been in the spot light. The Expendables, co-written, directed and starring Sylvester Stallone, finds a team of aging mercenaries being hired to over throw a dictator in a South American country. A lot of people grimace at the mention of Stallone’s last directorial attempt, when he reemerged as John Rambo. I actually enjoyed that flick. I’m interested to see how well he tackles a more dynamic film, with other guys who are as eager to not be forgotten as Sly himself. Let’s just go down the list. Along with the HGH enabled Stallone, we have Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke and…<snicker>…Dolph Lundgren working together along with Jason Statham and Jet Li. They one-upped The A-Team by not only having their own MMA star in Randy Couture, but also certified redneck WWE wrestler Steve Austin. Good job on dropping the “Stone Cold” from your resumé sheet. Then, making cameos we have The Govern-ATOR Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. I should also mention that the recently deceased Brittany Murphy is also listed on the cast, although I don’t have info on what part she takes within the film. Mix equal parts of past and present, shake well and serve over ice. No, the ice isn’t a metaphor for Lundgren’s acting abilities. It just cleverly worked itself out that way. In any case, Sly and the folks over at Lionsgate must have faith in the success, as its been said that Stallone has dropped plans for another Rambo sequel in order to prep for a part deux of The Expendables.

So, given the possibilities for success that the two latter mentioned films possess, what happened to The Losers? Honestly, I haven’t seen the film, but I’ve read that Chris Evans stole the show, which pretty much wraps it up for me. I’m sorry. I know he just landed the role of the decade with the Captain America gig, but I just can’t be excited about a movie, in which Evans is the premiere talent. However, again, without seeing the movie, I think the real adversary was timing. If WB had been smart, which they actually can be at times, they would have pushed back the release date until at least the A-Team had hit theaters. If you’re going to go head to head in The Box Office, you might want to somewhat ride on the coat tails of a better established group of, well, mercenaries. If The A-Team lands big, and carries well for several weeks, you can make a pretty safe bet that audiences want to see more of the same. So you get the rollover fans. If it ends up being The F-Team, which actually works pretty well for a Jenna Jameson flick, you can always take the cheap shot marketing approach that The Losers did it bigger and better. It might at least get you a bigger opening weekend. Maybe Warner Bros. was looking at it bass-akwards. I don’t know.

The Losers is in theaters now. You can catch the A-Team on June 11 and The Expendables is set to release on August 13. I’ll probably see all three when they come out on DVD.

Steven Spielberg to Direct War Horse

Steven Spielberg has been circling several projects for a while now trying to chhose his his next, from his long in gestation Lincoln biopic to an adaption of Michael Crichton's last novel Pirate Latitudes, at one point even a remake of Harvey was on the cards, but now he has finally chosen according to Variety.

Steven Spielberg has selected his next directing job: World War I epic "War Horse."

Disney and DreamWorks will release the film Aug. 10, 2011.

"War Horse" is based on Michael Morpurgo's novel of the same name, as well as a stage adaptation. Spielberg is producing with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Revel Guest. Scribes Lee Hall and Richard Curtis are penning the adapted script.

Set against the sweeping backdrop of the Great War, storyline charts the extraordinary friendship between a boy and a horse who are separated but whose fates continue to intertwine over the course of WWI.

Here's a synopsis of the book from Amazon.

From master storyteller, Michael Morpurgo comes an incredibly moving story about one horse's experience in the deadly chaos of the first world war. In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the frontline. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him.

This sounds like a return to his 80's and early 90's roots to me, a story with a certain innocence and hope to it, personally I think Spielberg has made a wise choice here. Granted it could turn out cheesy but that is the risk often taken with material that aspires to be inspirational, however given the glowing reviews of the book it seems Spielberg has got the material to work with that will allow him to tread on the right side of that line.

I think this is going to be one the summers sleeper hits along with The Sorcerers Apprentice. IGN has gotten hold of two rather cool new character posters.

New Trailer 'The American'

Focus Features has debuted the trailer for director Anton Corbijn's The American, starring George Clooney, Violante Placido, Thekla Reuten, Paolo Bonacelli and Bruce Altman.

In the suspense thriller, opening September 1st, Jack (Clooney) is a master craftsman who stands alone among assassins. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry (Altman) that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde (Reuten), is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Bonacelli) and pursues romance with local woman Clara (Placido). But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

Just from the looks of the trailer, I can't tell if this is going to be amazing, or if it's going to be ridiculously boring. The music through out the trailer was awful, it made the entire trailer boring as shit. I like George Clooney so I really hope this is good.

As Mac McCoy pointed out to me, he looks like a very slow Jason Bourne in his 40's. Who wants to watch that?

The Killers Trailer #2

I honestly can't recall much about trailer #1 other than I found it pretty poor, somehow this trailer doesn't feel knew to me but it is supposed to be.

This essentially looks like a charisma and laugh free version of Knight & Day, Kutcher and Heigl come off like B movie versions of Cruise and Diaz and the action also looks low budget in comparison.

My guess is they were aiming more to be a rip off of Mr and Mrs Smith meshed with a bit of True Lies, but due to the release of  Knight & Day in the same year they face a much more immediate and direct comparison, one I expect will not result in The Killers favour.

The Killers is released on June 4th and you can watch the trailer below.

Matthew Vaughn Back on Board for X-Men: First Class?

Just when we think it's over...they pull us right back in.

Variety is reporting that Matthew Vaughn is now in final talks with Fox to direct X-Men: First Class. Rumors swirled late last week that Vaughn was at the top of the studio's shortlist to direct the X-Men prequel, but that those talks had fallen apart and Vaughn had passed on what would have been his second shot at a directing an X-Men movie (he was originally set to direct X-Men: The Last Stand).

Now it looks like the talks are back on and they are now close to a deal.  According to Deadline, Fox had started interviewing other directors once the talks with Vaughn broke down last Thursday, but then cancelled the remaining interviews this morning when Vaughn came back to resume negotiations.

It sounds like they're finally close to a real deal this time - which is good news.  Vaughn proved he's got comic book movie muscle with Kick-Ass, he's got a good relationship with Bryan Singer, who's going to produce First Class along with Lauren Shuler-Donner and Simon Kinberg, and he's a favorite of the all-important fanboy crowd.  I think he's what the X-Men movie series needs right now.

Now let's hope nothing else goes wrong this time!

Box Office Actuals April 30 - May 2

The box office actuals are in for April 30 - May 2. A Nightmare On Elm Street had a somewhat strong opening coming in at number one with 32.9 million, and the other new opening this weekend Furry Vengeance failed to deliver, as expected. How to Train Your Dragon refuses to stay down, landing in the number two spot bringing in another 10.6 million this week

Next weekend we have Iron Man 2 (check back later tonight for my review) which will no doubt be taking the number one spot. You can expect Nightmare to take a huge drop, and possibly even fall out of the top ten sooner then later depending on word of mouth, as most of the reviews so far have been very bad.

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (New Line/WB) - $32.9 million

2. How to Train Your Dragon (DreamWorks Animation/Paramount) - $10.6 million

3. Date Night (20th Century Fox) - $7.5 million

4. The Back-Up Plan (CBS Films) - $7.2 million

5. Furry Vengeance (Summit) - $6.6 million

6. The Losers (Warner Bros.) - $5.8 million

7. Clash of the Titans (Warner Bros.) - $5.8 million

8. Kick-Ass (Lionsgate) - $4.5 million

9. Death at a Funeral (Sony/Screen Gems) - $4.1 million

10. Oceans (Disney) - $2.5 million

Check back to TMT on Wednesday for this coming weekends Box Office predictions.

Conan O' Brien on 60 minutes

If you missed it over the weekend, you can now watch Conan O’Brien’s full interview from 60 Minutes below. This is the first time since leaving The Tonight Show that he has been able to talk on the record about Jay Leno, NBC executives, his beard and his new TBS cable television show.

When Conan was asked whether or not he believes that Jay Leno acted honorably during the NBC scheduling fiasco, he hesitated before responding “If I had surrendered The Tonight Show and handed it over to somebody publicly and wished them well, I would not have come back six months later. But that’s me. Everyone’s got their own way of doing things.”
