    Weekend Box Office: March 22-24

    Courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

    1.  The Croods - $44.7 million

    2.  Olympus Has Fallen - $30.5 million

    3.  Oz The Great And Powerful - $22 million

    4.  The Call - $8.7 million

    5.  Admission - $6.4 million

    6.  Spring Breakers - $5 million

    7.  The Incredible Burt Wonderstone - $4.7 million

    8.  Jack the Giant Slayer - $2.9 million

    9.  Identity Thief - $2.5 million

    10.  Snitch - $1.9 million

It was great to be a caveman this weekend, as the animated The Croods did excellent business, earning an estimated $44.7 million.  That's a big sigh of relief for Dreamworks, whose Rise of the Guardians sputtered at the box office a few months ago.  Overseas, the film seems poised to be a hit of Ice Age-type proportions, having already grossed $62 million.

At last, this weekend also produced an action film that people showed up for, as Olympus Has Fallen earned an impressive $30.5 million, which is far better than the $24 million opening of A Good Day to Die Hard last month.  It also earned an "A-" Cinemascore from audiences, so unlike that phoned-in Die Hard sequel, this one may actually stick around for awhile.

Oz The Great And Powerful falls from first to third place, but gets that much closer to 2013's first $200 million grosser, earning $22 million to bring its domestic total to $177 million.

Halle Berry's The Call is still defying its original expectations, earning another $8.7 million.  The kidnapping thriller has earned a totally decent $30.9 million.

The weekend's other new release, Admission, starring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, didn't really catch on, earning just $6.4 million.  In wider release, Spring Breakers earned $5 million, which is significant since it's not really being widely advertised, but significant drops throughout the weekend could mean some not-so-good word of mouth to carry it much further from here.

Next weekend, the long-awaited (well, it was delayed from last summer) G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens in theaters, where it will be competing with the adaptation of the Stephanie Meyer novel that isn't Twilight, The Host.  Also in theaters will be Tyler Perry's latest, Temptation, and the British action thriller, Welcome to the Punch

J.J. Abrams Reminds Us He Wrote A Superman Movie

You want to know the influence of Superman: Flyby to The Man of Steel? We'll stick with just two things: Henry Cavill and that suit. They both originated from the J.J. Abrams-penned attempt to revive the Big Blue Boy Scout to the silver screen. Everyone be nice and say, "Thank you, McG!"

Someone was bound to ask Abrams his thoughts as Star Trek Into Darkness and The Man of Steel approach in the coming months. That someone is Empire:

"'The thing that I tried to emphasise in the story was that if the Kents found this boy, Kal-El, who had the power that he did, he would have most likely killed them both in short order,' Abrams told Empire. 'And the idea that these parents would see – if they were lucky to survive long enough – that they had to immediately begin teaching this kid to limit himself and to not be so fast, not be so strong, not be so powerful.'

'The result of that, psychologically, would be fear of oneself, self-doubt and being ashamed of what you were capable of. Extrapolating that to adulthood became a fascinating psychological profile of someone who was not pretending to be Clark Kent, but who was Clark Kent. Who had become that kind of a character who is not able or willing to accept who he was and what his destiny was.'

'The idea in the movie was that he became Superman because he realised he had to finally own his strength and what he’d always been. I don't know if that’s what Zack and Chris [Nolan] are doing, but it looks like that’s part of the idea and I could not be more thrilled to see that movie. That to me was always the way to go.'"

I must confess I'm surprised they didn't throw a "Story by" credit Abrams' way. Add to the nerd/general public cred that began with last summer's teaser trailer. By the way, the official promo tour kicks off next week with Henry Cavill in Japan. So for those of you still bitching about the lack of marketing, shut the Hell up. It's coming.

TASM Stunt-Double Shows Off Old Spidey Suit in TASM2

Earlier today, Spider-Man News  brought to public light that stunt-double and skateboarder William Spencer instagramed a picture of him in the costume from The Amazing Spider-Man while filming it's sequel, due out next summer.

Spencer also confirmed via tweet that this was indeed for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and not just a left-over picture for shits and giggles. This does much to quell fears that TASM 2 would just shove in the new (and some would argue improved) costume.

I, for one, always loved the 2012 costume; but the new one seems like it's the best of both worlds, of course many theories as to why Peter needs a new suit have been sprung up, mainly landing on the fact his old duds probably get trashed by Electro or Rhino.

My guess its we'll find out by the time a teaser trailer rolls around (which will hopefully be later this summer).

Ryan Reynolds Doesn't Care About Your Goddamned Justice League Movie

Being an actor primarily involved in geek fare, how long till you start tiring of the same pointless questions with the "Duh" answers? This excerpt from Ryan Reynolds' Empire chat tells the tale.

Until his dying breath, or those Christopher Nolan-producing rumors get confirmed or debunked, he'll have to field questions on Justice League since he remains the de-facto representation of Green Lantern despite his solo entry tanking and prospects of his continuing are nonexistent:

"'If you're going to do comic book movies in that vein, you really have to get them right,' says Reynolds. 'I believe that Joss Whedon is the guy that just nails it and Christopher Nolan obviously nails it. So if they were gonna do it like that, it would be an interesting thing to do.'

'It's just that... working on Green Lantern, I saw how difficult it is to make that concept palatable, and how confused it all can be when you don't really know exactly where you're going with it or you don't really know how to access that world properly - that world comic book fans have been accessing for decades and falling in love with,' he adds. 'So at this point I have very little interest in joining that kind of world. But, you know, a great script and a good director can always turn that around.'"

That, kids, is the sound of a man who doesn't give a shit. Also one who sees the writing on the wall (His Green Lantern contract reportedly expired... with no renewal) and tires of you asking him the same questions. Leave him alone. Move on.

SPRING BREAKERS Director Hosts Odd Reddit AMA

Spring Breakers opened today in it's wide-release, and to celebrate, director Harmony Korine hosted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit, found here.

The questions were all your average ones; but Korine's answers were certainly some head-scratchers.

This is all, however, seemingly normal for the director of Gummo and Kids. Korine did, however, address that he likes to work with different people, in regards to changing cinematographers in his films.

Also, Korine says he sought influence in Spring Breakers from: "money sex drugs and the mystic mix....cosmic gangsta shit....florida trap world....inventing all in a swirl of color and logic....magic"

Robert Redford Joins Captain America: The Winter Solider

For their times, paying Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson fortunes added weight to Superman: the Movie and Batman. Films based on comics were cheap junk. Throwing in Oscar-winning, legendary thespians brought the kind of legitimacy to get your parents attention. Those have yet to be equaled 'till this afternoon.

Robert Redford is joining Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Founder of the Sundance Film Festival, director of great, little intimate films like Ordinary People and Quiz Show and movie-star of yesteryear with Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Candidate and All the President's Men.

Yes, that Robert Redford is showing up in a big-budget superhero tentpole. What has the world come to?!  He'll play a senior SH.I.E.L.D. agent, likely to appear to future Marvel movies outside of next April's Cap sequel.

In the afore-mentioned examples of Brando and Nicholson, they were the first players added to the first picture. You know, lore them initially by their credibility and hope the quality keeps the audience around. Redford is coming onboard a follow-up. His mug won't add to box-office totals but it's a coupe on Marvel's part.

"The Crystal Script" Kickstarter Campaign Continues

Many people know the work of Phillip K. Dick (“Blade Runner” “Total Recall”), but in recent years interest in his short stories have become increasingly popular. When director Shahab Zargari and his brother writer Shahram Zargari started searching for an intriguing story to base their new short film, sparks flew. What they found was a “lost” gem.  The Crystal Crypt was first published in the January 1952 edition of Planet Stories magazine.  The setting in the distant future, with Earth and Mars on the verge of war and the last spaceship to leave Mars for Earth is suddenly stopped by Martian soldiers in search of three saboteurs who have destroyed a Martian city.  The story has a surprising conclusion, as is true with many of Dick’s most popular novels.

In independent filmmaking, the question is always: how can we get funding? But with a Sci-Fi genre film, the second question is how to make a journey through outer space look real, like Star Trek or Star Wars.

“If your concept is to create, let’s say, a remake of the Star Wars trilogy then you are so far past the short film it’s not even funny and lets not forget the problems with budgeting,” said director Shahab Zargari. “Try and come up with a concept that is simple and uses only a few locations with little to no special effects. As far as coming up with the actual story, keep it true to your vision.”

The brothers turned to Kickstarter, the popular crowd-funding website, but they are no strangers to production. They also enlisted producer Zeus Zamani, whom worked with them on the most recent promotional video for Luxor Las Vegas Casino.  The commercial ended up winning a total of five Silver Awards at the 2012 Davey Awards, including a trophy for the Videography & Cinematography category.

“The wonderful world of short filmmaking may be just the place for you to get started in the world of movie making,” states Zargari.  “We’re only a few months away from wrapping this project up, and I feel that I can share my thoughts on the subject. People should realize that independent filmmaking is less about ‘me’ and more about ‘we’.”

“I've been a Sci-fi nerd my entire life. I gravitated toward Philip K. Dick. He's one of my favorite authors in the genre. As soon as I saw Star Wars in the movie theaters as a little kid, I instantly knew that making movies was something I was passionate about,” says Zargari “I now have the confidence and the chops to start my directing career and I must succeed.”
