A little perspective for G.I.Joe fans

Hey folks, this not news per se but Jamie thought I should tell you about it anyway.

In preperation for the release of 'G.I.Joe: Rise of Cobra' (my written review of which can be found in the reviews section of the site just a click away), I put together this little video of what happened when some of my countrymen tried to make 'a real American hero' a little less Amercian and just took it too far.

So if you're about to head into the new film fearing the worst, just watch this and realise that it can't possibly insult the G.I.Joe you know and love as much as..........ugh, 'Action Force'.

Comic-Con: Tron Sequel Finally Has A Decent Title

Jamie can't believe they're making it and I can't wait to see it but the sequel to the 1982 Disney classic 'Tron' is headed our way and has gone through several permutations of title along the way.

When the concept footage was first unveiled to the public at last year's Comic-Con (I believe it was last year), the film was called 'Tron 2' but the powers that be decided that wasn't hip/trendy/confusing enough so the title actually read as 'TR2N'.

Not long after that, the title was changed to simply 'Tron' which is so stupid it defies description.

Thankfully, just today at Disney's Comic-Con panel, they announced the new (hopefully final) title as 'Tron: Legacy'.  That'll do for me though I will never understand why studios are so against numbering their sequels normally.  At least this film is going to be a sequel and not a reboot.  I'm sick of bloody reboots.

Thanks to Cinema Blend for the report.

'Tron: Legacy' hits theatres in 2011....................end of line.

'Star Trek' DVD and Blu-Ray finally announced - and lovely deleted scenes with it

As a DVD freak, one of my favourite special features are the deleted scenes.  It is also one of my biggest pet peeves with the major studios who, quite often and with some strategy to hold back for an 'even more special/ultimate' edition or an extended cut, decide not to include them on the initial DVD/Blu-Ray release.

Cases in point would be the alternate ending to 'Quantum of Solace', the Krypton spaceship opening from 'Superman Returns', the tons of deleted scenes from Lord of the Rings that didn't even make it into the extended versions but we know exist, THE DELETED SCENES FROM THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOOOOOOOOOOGY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahem, the list goes on and on.  Anyway, another film which might have fallen pray to that ugly tradition is 'Star Trek' (ie. the only summer blockbuster I actually care about purchasing on DVD so far).  We loved the film.  We analysed the trailers frame by frame in high definition quicktime to catch sight of any deleted material.  We read the novelization.  We read the online articles about what was cut and hoped we get to see them soon.

Well the good folks at comingsoon.net have been provided the full specs for the DVD and Blu-Ray release of 'Star Trek' coming, at least to US shores on November 17 (waaaaaaaaaaah, why so long, waaaaaaaaah) and Paramount haven't let us down.  From the look of things, we're getting all the deleted scenes from the film.  No double dipping, no extended cut (it doesn't need one I think we would all agree).  Included in both the two disc DVD edition and Blu-Ray edition will be:-

    Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary
    o Spock Birth
    o Klingons Take Over Narada
o Young Kirk, Johnny and Uncle Frank
o Amanda and Sarek Argue After Spock Fights
    o Prison Interrogation and Breakout
    o Sarek Gets Amanda
o Dorm Room and Kobayashi Maru (original version)
o Kirk Apologizes to the Green Girl
    o Sarek Sees Spock

The titles of the deleted scenes may not be very snazzy but they certainly tell you what to expect.  I want to see those Klingon bastards, find out what Nero was doing for all that time he was waiting for Spock and more Winona Ryder.

You can see the full DVD/Blu-Ray release specs over at http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=57226

And yes, that's a real custom made Star Trek home theatre at the top and don't tell me you don't want one.

MovieMoan: The Original Series - To Boldly Moan Where Everyone Has Moaned Before

Hey folks, it's Phil here with your promised Trek episode of MovieMoan arriving at warp speed. Hopefully I have caught you either gearing up for a night at the movies seeing the rebirth of 'Star Trek' on the big screen or you've just come back from it and are hungry for more. In either case, this is for you:-

Apologies for the iffy sound quality at some points but we had some major technical problems the week we recorded this particular live show.

MovieMoan: The Original Series - The Merry Moaning Marvel Society

Hey folks, it's Phil here with another blast of nostalgic movie moaning madness.  I know it's been a longer gap than usual between my last batch of Superman videos and this one but I've been extremely busy at work the last few weeks.  To compensate, you'll be getting two episodes in the space of two weeks.  Next week, we'll be delving into the Star Trek movies to commemorate the rebirth of the franchise....

...but this week we tackle Spider-man 3, one of the greatest examples of the self-destruction of a seemingly indestructible franchise.  If it weren't for this horrible mess, we'd probably be talking about the first trailer for Spidey 4 right now.

On our original live show last year, we discussed all the Marvel movies to date but frankly, this rant was the only one worthy of Youtube enhancement goodness so enjoy:

ps. That end joke about 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'?  You've no idea how true that turned out to be for me.  Be sure to listen to this week's podcast and I'll tell you all about it.

MovieMoan: The Original Series - Supermoan

Hey folks, as an early Easter present from myself and Jamie Williams I proudly present another dose of 'MovieMoan' with visual YouTube enhancement.

This time, we take a look at my personal favourite set of movies; the Superman films (it's certainly the set of films I know more about than any other).  Unlike other movies series such as POTC where we can only bitch about bad writing and over-spending, Superman provides a huge kaleidoscope of topics to discuss and we pretty much cover it all in this set of videos.  I really hope you enjoy them as I'm pretty proud of these ones:-

Part 1: Adoration of Superman The Movie and bitching about Superman II.

Part 2: Come back Superman II, we ain't finished with you yet, and drag Superman III over here as well.

Part 3: Superman IV is better than Superman III says Phil.

Part 4: Superman Returns is actually based on the true story of Jamie's love life.

New Star Trek posters are not logical Jim!

Hey folks, shall we play a little game of spot the difference.  Okey dokey then.  Ready, set........GO:

    Hmmmmmmm....

There are much bigger concerns in the world right now than how the art of the modern movie poster is dying, replaced by the menace of 'the floating head' but I think Paramount may have crossed the line this time by directly ripping off a poster to one of their own blockbusters from only last year (unless it's just me that thinks this and I'm crazily seeing things that aren't there).

Aside from that, notice the wording directly below the title on the 'Star Trek' poster; 'The Future Begins'.  Is this the new subtitle for the film?  Apparently, this is one of the UK posters for the film so it might simply be a European exclusive subtitle.  We know that 'The Future Begins' was the subtitle of the subtitle of 'Terminator: Salvation' for a while before it got dropped.  Have Paramount stolen that as well?  Does 'Star Trek' need a subtitle?

Even though I think the answer is 'no', I'd love to hear your thoughts.  I'm really rather disappointed at Paramount right now.

A shout out to 'MovieWeb' which have some more brand new Trek posters right here

MovieMoan: The Original Series Episode 5 - Gawd, we even moan about 'Aliens'

Hey folks, I know the last Youtube MovieMoan spectacular promised that the next videos would be about how the Alien film series completely failed to live up to it's potential with parts 3 & 4.  Unfortunately (and I've been wrestling with this all week), the show sucked and would not make a good video for your enjoyment....

...Except perhaps this little bit.  Jamie and myself were joined by our good friend Darren J Seeley during which he pointed out a plot hole in my second favourite film ever, 'Aliens' which has been bugging me ever since.  Watch this and see if you can figure out the mystery.  Solutions in the comments section if you please.  Enjoy:-

And the next videos are all about the Superman movies so you can be sure that I will be cooking a full three course meal this time, so to speak:)

The Naked Gun 4? - YES PLEASE!!!

I know it's hard for us to remember but there was a time when spoof movies weren't something to be afraid of.  They didn't come down the cinematic waste tube every couple of months, be completely devoid of humour, effort, and in a few recent cases, actual spoofing.  Spoof movies in the 80's and 90's were sporadic, some were incredibly funny and almost all of them featured Leslie Neilsen.

The Naked Gun film trilogy, a spin-off from the short lived TV series 'Police Squad' (taken off the air for requiring too much attention from the viewer), is fondly remembered as among the best of the spoof movies, and just plain comedy films in my opinion.  Watching them back now, it strikes me how, rather than going for the easy gags of just mimicking whatever action/cop/whatever hit movie was around at the time (though the 'Untouchables' spoof during the opening scene of Naked Gun 33 1/3 was pretty awesome), they really tried to tell a good story, with great characters, awesome villains like Ricardo Montablan and Robert Goulet, and the perfect mix of both slapstick humour and incredible one liners.  We haven't seen the like of these films in a long time....

...So I jumped out of my chair with excitment when I popped over to AICN today to find a glowing script review for “THE NAKED GUN: WHAT 4? THE RHYTHM OF EVIL.”  You can read all about it here.

There are so many reasons why it seems this film shouldn't get made:-

*Neilsen is really getting on in age.  The studio will probably not want him headlining the film and a cameo role would piss off the die-hard fans.

*Having a fresh new cast take the reigns seems to defeat the point of it being Naked Gun 4.

*Priscilla Presley looks hideous now (sorry, had to be said).

*I don't know what will make the public react worse; doing the OJ Simpson jokes but not having him in the film, or OJ actually making an appearance.

*Who, below the age of 20, even knows about 'The Naked Gun' movies?

*Who's gonna pay to see a fourth?

*Who the hell is nearly as passionate about this as me?

And they are good questions to be sure.  All I know is that if Naked Gun 4 could be as funny as the script review suggests, I want it in my life.  This isn't like Beverly Hills Cop 4.  This is MEANT to be ridiculous.

I can't wait to find out Jamie's views on this during this week's podcast.

MovieMoan: The Original Series - Batmoan

Hey special friends, Phil Gee here again to deliver another Youtube enhanced 'MovieMoan' special edition.

I'm sure you know the drill by now.  From 2007 - 2008, Jamie Williams and myself presented a live movie discussion show where we deconstructed, analysed, bitched and lamented the movie franchises and series that had so much potential and turned to crap for whatever reason.

Shortly after the release of 'The Dark Knight' (you might have heard of it) we took a look at the entire Batman franchise but I was shocked to learn that Jamie hadn't even seen all of 'Batman & Robin' (but he did see 'Battlefield Earth' in theatres - go figure) and we kinda like the other Bat films so we didn't have much to say that would make a good Youtube video.

Then our wonderful friend Queen Kristina called in to discuss 'The Dark Knight' and since the real strength of any film is how well it stands up to the bitching of two Americans and a Brit, we did a little nitpicking on this otherwise outstanding film.  Enjoy:-
