Ryan Reynolds is the Favorite for Safe House with Denzel Washington

As reported last month, Denzel Washington will star in Safe House, the thriller where its David Guggenheim-penned script went through a bidding war awhile back before settling in Universal's lap (and reviewed by our very own Peter Georgiou during our Inland Empire Strikes Back tenure).

Heat Vision reports the role of Matt Weston (the protagonist of the piece) will soon be filled and the front-runner appears to be Ryan Reynolds. An actor who's been very busy lately (just wrapped Green Lantern, about to start filming The Change-Up and R.I.P.D. looks to start up early next year), and as a matter of fact, has been referenced (in one form or another) in the last three articles I've written now. Is today "Ryan Reynolds Day" or something?

He'd play the rookie agent assigned to watch an ex-agent (Washington, who will no doubt do a great job here) in a CIA safe house. When their house is compromised, the two are forced on the run. Peter had pretty good things to say about the script and I like this pairing of Washington/Reynolds – assuming the deal goes through.

Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash) will direct.

Robert Schwentke in the Running to Direct R.I.P.D.

So I just spent the article below talking about how Fox and WB weren’t going to want to share Ryan Reynolds for their perspective comic-book franchises Deadpool and Green Lantern. But here we are talking about a third comic-based property the actor is attached to set up at a third studio (Universal). So am I a horse's ass?

Yes, but not over this. The project I'm referring to is R.I.P.D. and there's a big difference between having an actor doing something in this vein (itself about two deceased cops continuing their job in the after-life) as opposed to them dressing up in a costume, playing a comic-book superhero over potentially multiple flicks. It's apples and oranges.

Universal wants production on R.I.P.D. to start going ASAP. In this case, the moment Reynolds has free-time in his schedule. McG was hovering over this (as broken by Pajiba), but only as a follow-up to This Means Wars. So he's out. Instead, the Los Angeles Times report Robert Schwentke (whose Red hits this fall) has met with the studio.

If he gets the gig, there won't be a moment to spare as he'll immediately jump onboard. If all goes according to their plans, cameras could roll by the early months of next year.

Fox Versus WB - The Ryan Reynolds Round

The moment Ryan Reynolds signed on to headline Green Lantern (and by default any sequels and/or the much-rumored Justice League movie) for Warner Brothers, there was no way he was playing Deadpool for 20th Century Fox's planned X-Men spin-off.

"NU-UH! Fox hired those Zombieland writers and they talked to Robert Rodriguez about directing it! YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT!?!"

Take a breather there. We might still yet get that Deadpool movie, but you're nuts to think Reynolds will do it at this juncture.

"BUT REYNOLDS SAID HE WAS GONNA DO IT! AND HE WOULDN’T LIE ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE THAT! YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT!?!"

What people in the entertainment industry say out-loud rarely gels with the reality of what's going down. I'm sure there are public statements from Kevin Feige saying how much he can't wait to see Edward Norton in The Avengers. In a fashion similar to Bryan Singer having to choose between Fox and WB (twice in fact, once back in 2004 and the other just last year), Reynolds had to make a choice when the opportunity presented itself for him to play Hal Jordan versus Wade Wilson again.

The point of contention appears to be some Tweets made by Rob Liefeld (the creator of the Merc with the Mouth) over the last day or so:

"Bottom line about Deadpool film is that if FOX doesn't pull the DP film together with Ryan Reynolds between GL films-they should Hari Kari"

"Ryan Reynolds is the new Will Smith, if FOX can't maximize this window of opportunity with this star, this character, that script=MASSV FAIL"

"You have it reversed @GeekTyrant it's Warners that wants to film back 2 back GL's and disrupt Deadpool. Not FOX!! Get it right!"

To be fair, he subsequently reneged from some of those statements saying a piece over at Obsessed with Film triggered it. And some of the information there (referencing the rumors from last week of WB already moving ahead on Green Lantern 2 and 3) is false. Right now, they're lining their ducks up for one sequel that will obviously wait until the numbers come in from the June 17, 2011 opening weekend.

Come on, fellas. You really think both studios are perfectly fine with sharing Reynolds for rival comic-book franchises? Really?

John Belushi Biopic in Development at Warner Brothers

If you don't succeed, try a couple of decades later.

The story of comic-icon John Belushi was already chronicled in Wired, based on the Bob Woodward book. It was universally-rejected by Belushi's family/friends, critics and the general public. Good luck if you can find a copy of it on VHS.

But it's the kind of story that was eventually going to be attempted again. Properly handled, Belushi's story could result in a most excellent film. Risky Business reports Warner Brothers are up for that task and have assigned a screenwriter in Steven Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness) and Todd Phillips (currently one of the studio's Golden Boys – thanks to The Hangover, its forthcoming sequel due next May and this fall's Due Date).

For the time being Phillips' role is merely that of the producer. Whether he'll decide to sit in the director's chair will be determined down the line – i.e. after Conrad turns in his first draft and once The Hangover 2 wraps.

The big jalapeno, of course, is who would play Belushi. Again like the director, it's too early in the process to answer that question. But plenty in the current crop of "fat guy" actor/comedians are having their names thrown around – Zach Galifianakis, Jack Black and so on and so forth. If I'm casting this, I'd go for an unknown. That said I wouldn't bank on that.

Avengers Production Begins February 2011

The Avengers is looking for production start date in February, 2011. Marvel's newly rebooted Spider-Man franchise will have already been filming for a few months when their behemoth project gets underway.

Depending on the success of Thor and Captain America, this movie really could blow the lid off of summer blockbusters. Marvel has to be banking on Avengers to bring in numbers like The Dark Knight did in 2008 and I wouldn't be surprised if they are hoping to reach Avatar numbers.  With such a vast collection of well known heroes thrown into one movie, it would be hard to argue reasons why it will be successful.

I would put one suggestion in though, if you really want to solidify such large numbers at the box office; put Spider-Man and Wolverine in it as well. That would be over half of your audience probably. I understand the reasons of not putting Spider-Man in with all the recent changes but there's really nothing going against bringing Jackman back as Wolverine. I'd take him in Avengers over another mediocre solo film.

No Waltz For Spidey

Superherohype is reporting that Christopher Waltz is indeed not being cast as the villain in the next Spider-Man flick.

Last week rumors had many hopeful and some convinced that he would be involved as the next big baddie for the franchise. Its revealed that though Waltz will have no involvement, a great actor is being looked at for the part.

I thought this news gave instant credibility to the project and was looking forward to seeing him play the villain yet again. Its too early to grab any sort of opinion but nothing about it had really interested me at this point. Maybe their "great actor" will change the tides.

The Anderson Chronicles: Ghostbusters

In this week’s edition of The Anderson Chronicles I delve into the behind the scenes happenings on the currently in development hell Ghostbusters 3. It`s been rumoured for years now that the original team behind Ghostbusters would return for one last sequel, and in turn set up an additional trilogy with a younger cast. The one major issue always being that Bill Murray refused to reprise his role as Dr. Peter Vankman in the sequel.

The last few years more than anything the potential for actually seeing the film made have gotten higher, but still no real progress has actually been made. Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg who are also writers for the NBC sitcom The Office were hired to pen a script. According to Dan Akroyd the script is done, but they’re still waiting on the green light from the studio, which at this point seems highly unlikely. Originally the plan from Columbia was to release Ghostbusters 3 as a 2011 tent-pole in order to replace the revenue lost from scrapping Spider-Man 4 and rebooting that franchise for 2012. The problem being the studio was planning to go with either Ghostbusters or Men in Black, the latter of which is now in production set for a 2012 release date. At this point with the Spider-Man reboot and Men in Black 3 due out in 2012, Columbia is prepared to make a little less in 2011, which would have been the presumed release for a potential Ghostbusters sequel.

The most feasible option that seems to be left would be to start production immediately, which isn’t happening, or scrap the idea all together and move in a new direction. Although the first sequel to the original 1984 classic wasn’t received nearly as well they still saw moderate success with two animated series from the 80’s and 90’s, a new game and a shit ton of merchandise. Clearly the property still proves profitable, but if not a new live-action film where should the franchise be taken.

A live action TV show or a new animated series could successfully rejuvenate the franchise, the former being my first choice, but I’m assuming either could potentially make as much if not more than a third film depending on how many seasons it were picked up for. The opening pilot if it were to be live action could still include the original cast in cameo handing their proton packs down to a younger generation of Ghostbusters. Essentially the show would take the place of the purposed third film, and allow for the film continuity to remain intact. The same writers hired to pen the script for the film could very easily be brought on to write a bible for the potential pilot and first season, seeing as they both come from a comedic and TV sitcom background it would seem like a very easy transition.

The probability of Columbia going this route depends entirely on how soon they choose to take action. The show would likely only succeed if the original cast members were to appear in some capacity to give their blessing, the problem being the original cast aren’t getting any younger. At the very least they could decide to develop a new animated series instead and keep interest high as well as spike the interest of a new  generation of fans, before moving forward with the third feature film. Which comes back to if they ever to plan to move forward with the third instalment it’ll need to happen within the next year give or take.

I’m personally not holding my breath for any movement with the franchise, but like other lifelong fans I’m not giving up hope yet either. I’d love to see just about any new incarnation from the franchise at this point, but aside from the video game released last year I don’t think we can expect much more. At least not anytime soon.

Idris Elba May Be the New Alex Cross

James Patterson's detective/ psychologist hero Alex Cross appeared onscreen in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider as portrayed by Morgan Freeman. But with everything else under-the-sun getting rebooted, it was a matter of time before Alex Cross got his shot at a franchise resurrection.

Black Voices reports Cross (the twelfth of so far sixteen Patterson-written novels) will return the character onscreen. No details on who will be adapting the novel or any directors being considered.

They do however have the identity of who might take over the series for Freeman – Idris Elba. The confirmation came straight from the British actor himself:

"I have been offered to play Alex Cross and if that happens, I'm really excited about it."

Indeed, Elba is a very, very good choice for the Washington, D.C. based character. Having been a fan of the books, he fits the criteria for Cross – way more than Freeman who felt like he was doing more an extension of his Somerset character from Seven. Knock on wood, this happens. He's one of those actors you've seen around but couldn't put your finger on where you'd remembered him from. The Wire, his turn on The Office last year, The Losers, he'll appear as the god Heimdal in Thor next May, etc.
