New Trailer "Im Still Here"

So Joaquin isn't bat shit crazy? Yeah I never would have figured this was all a hoax until now. The new trailer for the mockumentary "Im Still Here" is now online. The funny thing about the trailer is, it treats the film as if it were a "real" serious documentary, this should be hilarious!

The directorial debut of Oscar-nominated actor Casey Affleck, I’M STILL HERE is a striking portrayal of a tumultuous year in the life of internationally acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix. With remarkable access, I’M STILL HERE follows the Oscar-nominee as he announces his retirement from a successful film career in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. Sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, and always riveting, the film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads. Defying expectations, it deftly explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.

Be on the look out for Stanley Steamers and other absurd acts in your local theater this September 10th when Joaquin Phoenix shows everyone just how "crazy" he really is.

New Images From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Warner Bros has released several high-res images from their upcoming Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows the first of a two part finale due out November 19th of this year with Part Two hitting July 15th, 2011.

I'm not much of a Harry Potter nut, but I'll admit I am interested to see how the franchise concludes. For the rest of the images none of which I wouldn't consider spoilerish go HERE.

Oliver Platt Joining X-Men First Class

Holy shit balls the ridiculously long list of casting for X-Men First Class continues, TOLDJA! is reporting that Oliver Platt has now also joined the cast, but surprisingly he will NOT be a mutant unlike the other 500 mutants appearing in the film already. His character is known as "The Man in Black", which I'm assuming has no relation to legendary singer Johnny Cash.

The ridiculously long list of stars in this film is as follows, James McAvoy as Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Alice Eve as Emma Frost, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee, Lucas Till as Havoc, and Edi Gathegi as Darwin. Kevin Bacon is playing the villain and Rose Byrne will play McAvoy's love interest Moira MacTaggert.

Production is expected to start next month in London for a June 3, 2011 release date.

Marveling At The Past - Iron Man (2008)

"Jarvis, sometimes you've gotta run before you can walk"

And with that, Robert Downey Jnr. becomes Iron Man and soars off into the night sky on his first test flight. This was an important moment for me in the film because it was when I decided, no matter what, that it had me from this point on. The test flight sequence proved to be the epitome of something that has been lacking from far too many comic book movies, something which it meant a lot for me to see; the joy of being a superhero, the joy of flight.

It is fair enough that films such as the X-Men series are about social issues and oppressed characters with powers they view as a curse. It is fair enough that the Batman, Hulk or Daredevil films deal with deeply troubled or disturbed characters with no happiness in their lives. It is fair enough that the Fantastic Four films never seemed to have the money to show their super powers in full swing no matter what.

That still leaves us with movies such as 'Spider-man'; a film about the underdog being blessed with extraordinary abilities, films that attempt to place us in the shoes of the protagonist and ask the question 'what would you do?'. Most likely, we would go on a crazy all night web swinging binge across the city. We would be on a high. We would never want it to stop. This is why, no matter what some people tell me, I will always maintain that a Superman film, when done right, will be as big if not bigger than any other recent comic book movie. The joy of flight is something we can all relate to as the ultimate representation of freedom from everything in our own lives that tethers us to the ground. If you are looking out of a window as you're reading this, wishing you could open it, soar into the air and go wherever you wanted, I think I've proven my point.

Jon Favreau clearly understood this because, even though most of us cannot relate to the multi million dollar California penthouse, Tony Stark does exactly this. Even though his goal is to use Iron Man to tackle a global problem, he first instinct once the suit is complete is to give it a whirl just for the fun of it. He has been slaving away in his basement for endless days and weeks building this technology and this is his reward; the ability to, for a brief moment, forget all the problems and responsibilities he has and.......soar.

This is why, when Downey Jnr. is cheering himself on as he flies, it isn't cheesy, it gives you goose bumps. We are right there with him, sharing that joy. It meant a lot to me because this is exactly the sort of sequence I was expecting to get in 'Superman Returns'. Although I enjoyed the film a great deal, nothing disappointed me more than the sight of CGI Brandon Routh flying across Metropolis in some pretty pedestrian shots. 'Iron Man' breaks free of badly done CGI. It breaks free of the need most comic book movies feel to show heroes as tragic, lonely souls 100% of the time. And it broke free of certain clichés which were really starting to show their age in the comic book movie genre by this point.

Getting back to that test flight sequence for instance. In a lot of other directors hands, a crime fighting montage would immediately follow. Do we need to see the invincible Iron Man being a friend to the working man by saving a construction worker from falling off a girder? Do we need to see him through the eyes of a terrified lowlife criminal as he stops a mugging? Jon Favreau, thank goodness, believes that we do not.

How refreshing it is to have a hero whose goals are on a far more epic scale. Tony Stark's own weapons manufacturing conglomerate is dealing arms on the black market to terrorists around the globe and Iron Man functions solely to hunt them down and destroy them, wherever they may be. How refreshing also that Iron Man has no issues with dealing harsh justice to said enemies. Finally we have a superhero (in a PG13 movie) that kills people, free of any self imposed ethical code that prohibits it.

How great, after three bouts with Mary Jane Watson and her penchant for being kidnapped in the 'Spider-man' movies, to be presented with the character of Pepper Potts; a mousy but quietly confident, considerate, charming and likeable character. So often the support that our hero needs to get through adversity, the 'rock' if you will, comes in the form of a parental figure, deceased or otherwise. 'Iron Man' smartly places that function on the shoulders of the token female love interest and, as such, stops Pepper Potts from being just the token female love interest. Rather than being shoe-horned into the climax as bait for the hero, she actually brings about the climax by exposing Obadiah Stane for the criminal mastermind that he is.

The only cliche the film does fall pray to is with the villain himself. The only time the film slows to a crawl is during the five minute sequence where Stane needs to steal Stark's arc reactor powered artificial heart and does so by using a sonic paralysing gadget and then monologuing about he is behind everything and how Tony can do nothing to stop him. Though it may appear that Stane feels the need to eliminate Stark so that the company he is just as much an owner of can get back to making weapons, something which the latter has forbid and as such has become a liability. But the film clearly states that Stane conspired with the terrorists who captured him well before the events that happen later in the film which gives him the appearance of a slightly one dimensional power monger. Actually, come to think of it, that does kind of make Stane an original villain amongst all the jealous boyfriends, father figures and generally flawed people who have strayed from the light but are good deep down inside, which seem to populate the rest of the Marvel movies. It is refreshing to have a villain who is just a son of a bitch.

So that is really all I have to say on the subject of 'Iron Man'. I just wanted to explain what I responded to most in the film. Even if the planned Marvel Film Universe does completely unravel over the next few years, we can always look back on the first Iron Man as a self contained, untainted, glorious bout of fun. Speaking of that film universe, the first misstep came just a month after the release of 'Iron Man' in the form of 'The Incredible Hulk', a film that I do have a lot to say about. I hope you'll join me next time for that.

Rooney Mara Cast in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara have been cast in the lead roles of Columbia Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy under the direction of David Fincher. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – the first film of the series, which also includes The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest – begins shooting next month in Sweden. The screenplay is written by Steve Zaillian and the film is being produced by Scott Rudin, Cean Chaffin, Ole Sondberg and Søren Stærmose. Mikael Wallen and Anni Fernandez are executive producers. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is set for worldwide release December 21, 2011.

The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson has been published in 44 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide thus far. In the U.S. alone, the series has sold over 10 million copies, and the sales were recently calculated at the remarkable rate of one book per second. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has broken sales records in virtually every country in which it has been published. It has sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. and has out-sold any other e-book in that rapidly expanding market. A literary phenomenon, all three books currently sit atop the New York Times Best Seller lists. In describing the scale of Larsson’s achievement, The Economist said: “Stieg Larsson’s vivid characters, the depth of the detail across the three books, the powerfully imaginative plot, and the sheer verve of the writing make the trilogy a masterpiece of its genre.” Michiko Kakutani, of The New York Times, described the Lisbeth character: “Lisbeth Salander, Stieg Larsson’s fierce pixie of a heroine, is one of the most original characters in a thriller to come along in a while – a gamin, Audrey Hepburn look-alike but with tattoos and piercings, the take-no-prisoners attitude of Lara Croft and the cool, unsentimental intellect of Mr. Spock. She is the vulnerable victim turned vigilante; a willfully antisocial girl . . . who has proved herself to be as incandescently proficient as any video game warrior.” The three novels have all become #1 worldwide bestsellers, an achievement unrivaled in trade book publishing.

DAVID FINCHER most recently directed this fall’s much-anticipated The Social Network for Columbia Pictures, which opens in the U.S. on October 1st.

DANIEL CRAIG recently starred in the two highest-grossing films in the James Bond franchise, Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale. His earlier film roles include Munich, Enduring Love, Layer Cake, The Mother, Road to Perdition, and Some Voices. He has also recently completed filming on Jim Sheridan’s Dream House, Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, and Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens.

Before she was cast in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, Rooney Mara starred in THE WINNING SEASON!

Mara will also appear in this fall’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK. But if you can’t wait until then, catch her in THE WINNING SEASON, opening in theaters September 3, 2010!!!

The Avengers is being shot in 3D

According to Showbiz411 comes some completely un-shocking news, Joss Whedon’s The Avengers will be shot in 3D. I guess this is a step up from Thor and Cap, seeing as they're both being converted in post production, but did any of these films really need to be in 3D to begin with?

That stupid bastard James Cameron as royally fucked things up in Hollywood with his "epic" re-introduction of 3D in movies. Now every thing form comedies to horror, and especially action/comic book films are being released in 3D. Thanks so much James!

The avengers which comes out May 2012 starts production in February and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo.

New Avatar Special Edition Trailer

That overrated bastard James Cameron is re-releasing Avatar and he wants you to know about it! The special edition version of the film includes 9 minutes of never before seen footage, and apparently a sex scene as well, yay?

The new once again over hyped smurfs on steroids will return to the big screen on August 27th. They really want to push it over 3 billion and I have a feeling people are dumb enough to help them. Below is the new trailer.

Frank Sinatra & Marilyn Monroe Cast!

The Times are reporting that George Clooney and Angelina Jolie have been cast as legendary icons Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe in an adaptation of the upcoming novel, The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, and of His Friend, Marilyn Monroe.

The book, by Andrew O'Hagan and set for release this December, serves as a biopic of Monroe, told through the eyes of her Scottish maltese poodle, Mafia Honey (nicknamed Maf), given to her as a present by Sinatra.

It's not known yet if there's already a director attached, but with this star power and plot we can likely expect to see an A-List director coming on board.

This might also mean that the Martin Socrsese directed Sinatra Bio-Pic may be put on indefinite hold. Al Pacino was set to star as Sinatra. As much as I love both Scorsese and Pacino the casting at this point sounded completely ludicrous, that is unless Pacino would only only play Sinatra later in life. Regardless I just hope Clooney opts of playing "Clooney" when taking on such an iconic role.

Brian De Palma Toys With Psycho Thriller

It's a slow news day but as I peered through blurry eyes at the movie news while sipping a cup of tea this morning I came across news that hit and miss auteur Brian De Palma was lining up a new film.

Vulture reports that he is returning to an adaption of book called "Toyer" that he's been interested in for six years. The plot frankly sounds dopey but if they cast the right actor and actress it could an entertaining two-hander.

One thing I am not keen on is the location shift, it seems nothing more than visual gimmickry to me, which may distract from the central concept of the psycho vs doctor rivalry.

Six years ago, reports surfaced that Brian De Palma would next be directing the diabolical Gardner McKay novel and stage play Toyer, which follows a "serial lunatic." The Toyer doesn't murder or rape his beautiful female victims, he "toys" with them, torturing them psychologically, then puttting them into a medically induced coma. (Sort of like what De Palma did to audiences in Snake Eyes ... We kid, Brian!)

Anyway, without a capital crime to prosecute, the police and D.A. can only charge the Toyer with "mayhem," and as they're overwhelmed with hundreds of uncleared murder cases, the Toyer case becomes a lower priority. So a female neurologist who treats Toyer's victims teams up with a newspaper editor to draw him out and bring him to justice.

This time, we're told, Toyer really is happening, but as an indie financed via producers Tarak Ben Ammar, (who most famously produced Franco Zefferilli's La Traviata) and the L.A.-based Scott Steindorff. Steindorff has brought heavyweight literature like Philip Roth's The Human Stain and Gabriel García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera to the screen, and tells Vulture that the film will be shooting in Venice, Italy, late this fall and into the early winter.

That's a switch from the Gardner version, which is set in L.A., but should be far creepier: De Palma plans to set the mayhem against Venice's famous Carnevale di Venezia, for which elaborate masks disguising one's identity are traditionally worn on the street from St. Stephen's Day (the day after Christmas) until the start of the Venitian Carnival (two weeks before Ash Wednesday). Steindorff says shooting during the actual Carnival (during February and March) would be logistically impossible. They plan to re-create their own Carnival on location.

"It has all the elements of suspense that Brian does so well in films like Blow Out and Carrie," Steindorff says, adding, "And by that I mean, it's really frickin' scary: I read the script on a plane, and I was still terrified."

Rose Byrne & Jason Flemying Board X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class gets going pretty soon, and it's finalizing the cast just before cameras roll in the UK.

Two more reliably-solid character-actors are filling in secondary roles. As per THR, Rose Byrne (from Damages, i.e. one of the best television shows on right now – God bless you, DirecTV!) will play Moira MacTaggert, an ex-flame of James McAvoy's young (and possibly pre-hair challenged) Chucky Xavier.

If you didn't think there weren't enough "connect the dots" characters (because who needs to figure shit out for themselves), Jason Flemyng is onboard as Azazel, the demonic-looking teleporter who turns out to be Nightcrawler's daddy. This comes via Coming Soon. No word if we'll have a scene where Mystique runs out of birth-control and shrugs, "Eh, what’s the worst that could happen?"

The more I hear about First Class, I truthfully am getting less and less inclined to be confident in its quality. Feels like they're throwing in as many characters as they can (just as they did for the last two rather unpopular X-flicks).
