Green Lantern Animated Series Poster

And the Green Lantern news continues...

DC announced earlier in the year that a Green Lantern animated series would begin with the upcoming film and now TV Guide has the first exclusive photo from the series. Its pretty basic and doesn't reveal much other than a tease that the series is coming.

This follows other big news from DC and announcements at the New York Comic Con. The series will air in 2011 with Bruce Timm producing who has headed all the major DC animated related projects.

Still No Greenlight on The Hobbit

In the same fashion I ignore Dan Aykroyd chatting up Ghostbusters 3 and everything coming outta Mark Millar's big mouth, The Hobbit is a topic I pay little to no attention to. Despite what anyone claims until MGM settles their mullah-woes (or sells off their share of the rights, and of course, that'll never happen), nothing will become of the two-movie Lord of the Rings prequel.

That's why I just shook my head and opted not to cover the "Hobbit will get the greenlight in a day or so and filming will start in January" story originating at the start of this week. It smelled like bullshit especially when paying attention to what's been going on.

Thankfully, I wasn't the only one as Peter Jackson admitted to Empire that there's no greenlight in sight on The Hobbit:

"We've seen these reports before, reports saying there was going to be a greenlight in a couple of days — well, a week's gone by and there isn’t one. You can't believe everything you read. There is only one thing you want to believe and that’s when the studio announces a greenlight. As far as I'm aware that's not going to be today."

Jackson (who also claims he's not secured a deal to direct – not sure I believe him though) remains optimistic this'll all work out. To be fair, the long-talked about Spyglass deal is inching closer to a reality. If things goes smoothly (and enough creditors approve), the studio could return refreshed from a pre-packaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan as early as Christmas. That's assuming there aren't any more pot holes on the road towards their reemergence.

But that's going to take time either way and this constant insistence of making those December 2012 and 2013 release dates on The Hobbit flies directly in the face of common sense and logic. 2012 isn't doable under these circumstances, folks.

Harry Potter Casts Spell Against 3D!

Let's be honest here. Harry Potter doesn't need that extra 3D bump anyway to bust the $1 billion cherry. Hell, the franchise averages around $950 million per film. And with all the press it'll get about these being the final installments, that'll only help push it past ten digits.

Warner Brothers has officially nipped their 3D plans in bud for Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows – Part I due to hit cinemas next month. THR has the details.

Well, at least they're being honest. They just can't it ready in time for next month. Notice how not a word is uttered about Deathly Hallows – Part II. AKA come Hell or high-water, the final Harry Potter movie will have 3D slapped on it.

Stumbling into a job at "Daybreak" (the last-place national morning news show), Becky decides to revitalize the show by bringing on legendary TV anchor Mike Pomeroy (Ford).  Unfortunately, Pomeroy refuses to cover morning show staples like celebrity gossip, weather, fashion  and crafts - let alone work with his new co-host, Colleen Peck (Keaton), a former beauty queen and longtime morning show personality who is more than happy covering morning "news." As Mike and Colleen clash, first behind the scenes and then on the air, Becky's blossoming love affair with fellow producer, Adam Bennett (Wilson) begins to unravel - and soon Becky is struggling to save her relationship, her reputation, her job and ultimately, the show itself.

Michelle Williams As Marilyn Monroe In "My Week With Marilyn"

In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark, just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of The Prince and the Showgirl, the film that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe, who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Arthur Miller.

Nearly 40 years on, his diary account "The Prince, the Showgirl and Me" was published, but one week was missing and this was published some years later as "My Week with Marilyn" - this is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of work.

Marilyn Monroe is played by the Academy Award nominated Michelle Williams and Tony award winning Eddie Redmayne stars as Colin Clark. Kenneth Branagh plays Sir Laurence Olivier with Judi Dench as Dame Sybil Thorndike. They are joined by Julia Ormond as Vivien Leigh, Dougray Scott as Arthur Miller, Zoe Wanamaker, Emma Watson, Toby Jones, Philip Jackson, Geraldine Somerville, Derek Jacobi, Simon Russell Beale and Dominic Cooper.

Simon Curtis' credits include the BAFTA and Emmy winning "Cranford," the International Emmy winning "A Short Stay in Switzerland" and the Golden Globe nominated "Five Days." The film is produced by David Parfitt and the screenplay is by Adrian Hodges. It is based on Colin Clark's diaries, "The Prince, The Showgirl and Me" and "My Week with Marilyn."

The film is produced by Trademark Films and is financed and distributed by The Weinstein Company. BBC Films and Lipsync Productions are also financing the picture. It was developed in association with the UK Film Council and BBC Films.

David Parfitt, Managing Director, Trademark Films, comments: "We are delighted to be re-establishing our successful partnership with the incomparable, irrepressible Harvey Weinstein. We have a superb cast and crew thanks in no small part to the support of The Weinstein Company and our incredible development partners: UK Film Council and BBC Films."

Harvey Weinstein from The Weinstein Company says: "We are truly thrilled to be working with the immensely talented Simon Curtis on his feature debut, with our trusted partners and good friends producer David Parfitt, Christine Langan and BBC Films, from a remarkable true story, beautifully realised script, stellar cast and top-notch crew, we couldn't be happier embarking on this production."

Christine Langan, Creative Director of BBC Films, adds: "With his illustrious background in BBC drama, we are proud to be supporting Simon Curtis in his movie debut. The brilliant host of talent that Simon, along with Oscar winning producer David Parfitt, has brought together to tell this gem of a British story is truly exciting and we are privileged to be going on this journey with the magnificent Harvey Weinstein."

Disney Theatrical Group Restructuring

Disney Theatrical Group is doing some reshuffling and changing of the guard, TOLDJA! has the press release. See below.

Today we are announcing a restructuring of some specific areas of Disney Theatrical Group (DTG), most significantly Marketing and Distribution, to align us more closely with both the Studio and Disney International organizations.  The new structure will give us more flexibility, focus and strength.  In addition, this simplified structure will allow us to more efficiently deliver our shows to audiences around the world.

Inevitably, a restructuring often involves complex staff changes and unavoidable reductions.  We have made these decisions after a thorough review of our business and organization.  The individuals directly affected by these structural changes have already been made aware, and will be provided severance benefits including outplacement assistance to support them in this transition.  I ask that we be sensitive and respectful during this time.  While circumstances can change, we do not have plans for additional layoffs at this time.

Below, I have outlined in broad strokes the new organization and changes, but we will gather as a group soon to discuss our plans for moving ahead and answer any questions you have.

I genuinely appreciate your cooperation during this time and look forward to shaping an exciting future together.

With thanks,
David

New Operational Structure for Disney Theatrical Group – October 2010

MARKETING

Andrew Flatt will lead a centralized marketing strategy and resources team encompassing five key areas:  creative, media/advertising, synergy/partnerships, social media/online and CRM/research.  Andrew’s team will manage these areas for all of our domestic businesses – self-produced and licensed musicals as well as coordinating approvals for Disney on Ice and Disney Live productions.  Andrew’s team will also serve as a shared services resource center for the local teams in international regions.

DOMESTIC DISTRIBUTION

Jack Eldon is relocating to New York to lead a team responsible for managing our domestic businesses including self-produced and licensed musicals as well as coordinating with Feld Entertainment on the success of domestic Disney on Ice and Disney Live engagements.

INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION

Ron Kollen will oversee strategy for all our businesses outside the U.S.  Around the world, Fiona Thomas, based in London, is responsible for Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) and Russia.  James Thane, based in Sydney, is responsible for Australia and South East Asia.  Michael Cassel, based in New York, is responsible for Japan, Latin America, China and India.  In addition, Felipe Gamba recently joined Ron’s team in New York to explore local content development opportunities with local country leadership worldwide.

FINANCE AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Mario Iannetta will lead finance and a newly formed business development role, headed by Michael Barra, who is coming to join Mario’s team in New York from a position with Studio Finance in Burbank.  In addition to analyzing new opportunities, Michael’s business development role will link into Leslie Stern’s Studio Franchise team to explore how DTG can adapt content developed by the Studio and Channels.

All four department heads will report to me along with Bryan Dockett (Domestic Sales), Steven Downing (Merchandising), June Heindel (Human Resources) and Dana Amendola (Operations). Myself, Steve Fickinger (Creative Development), Michele Steckler (Production), Joe Quenqua (Public Relations) and Jonathan Olson (Business and Legal Affairs) will continue to report to Tom.

As a result of this reorganization, the management of our long-time licensing relationship with Feld Entertainment will be consolidated into these new departments in New York.  As a result, we are informing the Glendale staff of changes today and closing the office at month’s end.  Carol Nygren, who successfully led this area for five years, will be leaving our group.  We thank Carol for her many years of enthusiastic leadership.

Change can be difficult and it can also be the key to successfully moving forward in a complex business environment.  Our first priority will always be to develop and deliver exceptional experiences that connect with our audiences.
