Aaron Sorkin Goes Social On Kevin Levines Blog

On Kevin Levine's once obscure but now socially acceptable blog, a commenter has upped his hit counts due to their complaint about "The Social Network". Dug deep in the comments section of Kevin Levine's review of "The Social Network" is a comment by an individual know as "Tarazza".

I love your blog!!

I also loved The Social Network, except for one thing-- the lack of a decent portrayal of women. With the exception of 1 or 2 of them (Rashida Jones included), they were basically sex objects/stupid groupies. Even what you say here:
Jesse Eisenberg is what Michael Cera aspires to be. Justin Timberlake continues to be the most talented STAR SEARCH winner ever, And Rashida Jones is just great to look at.

... kinda makes me think that Aaron Sorkin (though I love his writing) failed the women in this script. Kind of a shame considering he's written great women characters like C.J. Cregg!

Of course the film's screenwriter Aaron Sorkin just happened to be crusing the internet superhighway and decided to respond.

Believe me, I get it. It's not hard to understand how bright women could be appalled by what they saw in the movie but you have to understand that that was the very specific world I was writing about. Women are both prizes an equal. Mark's blogging that we hear in voiceover as he drinks, hacks, creates Facemash and dreams of the kind of party he's sure he's missing, came directly from Mark's blog. With the exception of doing some cuts and tightening (and I can promise you that nothing that I cut would have changed your perception of the people or the trajectory of the story by even an inch) I used Mark's blog verbatim. Mark said, "Erica Albright's a bitch" (Erica isn't her real name -- I changed three names in the movie when there was no need to embarrass anyone further), "Do you think that's because all B.U. girls are bitches?" Facebook was born during a night of incredibly misogyny. The idea of comparing women to farm animals, and then to each other, based on their looks and then publicly ranking them. It was a revenge stunt, aimed first at the woman who'd most recently broke his heart (who should get some kind of medal for not breaking his head) and then at the entire female population of Harvard.

More generally, I was writing about a very angry and deeply misogynistic group of people. These aren't the cuddly nerds we made movies about in the 80's. They're very angry that the cheerleader still wants to go out with the quarterback instead of the men (boys) who are running the universe right now. The women they surround themselves with aren't women who challenge them (and frankly, no woman who could challenge them would be interested in being anywhere near them.)

And this very disturbing attitude toward women isn't just confined to the guys who can't get dates.

I didn't invent the "F--k Truck", it's real -- and the men (boys) at the final clubs think it's what they deserve for being who they are. (It's only fair to note that the women -- bussed in from other schools for the "hot" parties, wait on line to get on that bus without anyone pointing guns at their heads.)

These women--whether it's the girls who are happy to take their clothes off and dance for the boys or Eduardo's psycho-girlfriend are real. I mean REALLY real. (In the case of Christy, Eduardo's girlfriend so beautifully played by Brenda Song, I conflated two characters -- again I hope you'll trust me that doing that did nothing to alter our take on the events. Christy was the second of three characters whose name I changed.)

I invented two characters -- one was Rashida Jones's "Marylin", the youngest lawyer on the team and a far cry from the other women we see in the movie. She's plainly serious, competent and, when asked, has no problem speaking the truth as she sees it to Mark. The other was Gretchen, Eduardo's lawyer (in reality there was a large team of litigators who all took turns deposing witnesses but I wanted us to become familiar with just one person -- a woman, who, again, is nobody's trophy.

And Rooney Mara's Erica's a class act.

I wish I could go door to door and make this explanation/apology to any woman offended by the things you've pointed out but obviously that's unrealistic so I thought the least I could do was speak directly to you.

Trailers For "Cool It" & "All Good Things"

Climate catastrophe? The end of civilization as we know it? COOL IT is based upon the book of the same name and lectures by Bjorn Lomborg, the controversial author of The Skeptical Environmentalist. Award-winning filmmaker Ondi Timoner travels the world with Lomborg exploring the real facts and true science of global warming and its impact. Lomborg is the founder and director of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, a globally respected think tank that brings together the world’s leading economists to prioritize major global problems -- among them malaria, the lack of potable water and HIV/AIDS -- based upon a cost/benefit analysis of available solutions. Amidst the strong and polarized opinions within the global warming debate, COOL IT follows Lomborg on his mission to bring the smartest solutions to climate change, environmental pollution, and other major problems in the world.

Inspired by the most notorious missing person’s case in New York history, ALL GOOD THINGS is a love story and murder mystery set against the backdrop of a New York real estate dynasty in the 1980s. Produced and directed by Andrew Jarecki (director of the Academy Award-nominated doc Capturing the Friedmans and producer of Catfish), the film was inspired by the story of Robert Durst, scion of the wealthy Durst family. Mr. Durst was suspected but never tried for killing his wife Kathie who disappeared in 1982 and was never found. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella as the powerful patriarch, and captures the emotion and complexity of this real-life unsolved mystery.

Weekend Box Office: October 15-17

Courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

1.  Jackass 3D - $50 million

2.  Red - $22.5 million

3.  The Social Network - $11 million

4.  Secretariat - $9.5 million

5.  Life as We Know It - $9.2 million

6.  Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole - $4.2 million

7.  The Town - $4 million

8.  My Soul to Take - $3.1 million

9.  Easy A - $2.6 million

10.  Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps - $2.3 million

Did anyone see that one coming?  Jackass 3D broke October box office records this weekend (no doubt helped by the 3D screenings this time around), opening with $50 million.  That easily tops the $48 million opening for Scary Movie 3 in 2003, which previously held the October opening weekend record.

Also opening well this weekend as the action comedy Red, which opened with $22.5 million, giving Summit Entertainment their first non-Twilight big opening weekend.

David Fincher's The Social Network drops to third place this weekend with $11 million, putting its total domestic gross at an impressive $63 million after just three weeks.  Switching places from last weekend, Disney's Secretariat landed in fourth place with $9.5 million (a drop of only 25%), while the Katherine Heigl comedy Life As We Know It came in just behind it with $9.2 million.

Legend of Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole comes in sixth place with $4.2 million, bringing its total to an a still-underwhelming $46 million.  Warner Bros must be really relieved that they've got a Harry Potter movie coming out next month, and that Ben Affleck's The Town has had such a great run, adding another $4 million this weekend to bring its total to an impressive $80 million.

Wes Craven's My Soul to Take did the expected second weekend nosedive for a horror film, dropping 53% to earn only $3.1 million.  The film has grossed just $11.9 million.  Easy A continues its terrific run, earning $2.6 million to bring its total to $52 million.  Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps just hangs on in tenth place with $1.3 million.  The sequel has grossed just $47 million after four weeks in theaters.

Clint Eastwood's Hereafter earned $231,000 in just six theaters in New York and Los Angeles.  That bodes well for when it opens wide next weekend, when its main competition will be Paranormal Activity 2.  We'll stayed tuned to see which take on the afterlife scores with audiences next weekend.

Update - From There & Back Again: The Hobbit Greenlit

UPDATE: It's officially official. Steve Cooper, Toby Emmerich and Alan Horn (the respective big-cheeses of New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers and MGM) have confirmed The Hobbit's greenlight status as well as Peter Jackson directing as per THR.

We've heard variations of this before. So I can't help but have a knee-jerk reaction and claim bullshit. Truth to be told, there's something that doesn't add up. But I'm nonetheless prepared to eat my words live on the next edition of Movie Moan!

Two separate outlets (The Wrap and New York Times) are reporting The Hobbit got its greenlight after an eternity of set-backs with studios' in financial shambles, directors jumping ship, plenty of casting rumors and everything else in between. Warner Brothers and MGM gave the go-ahead on the two-film Lord of the Rings prequel with a deal finalized to get Peter Jackson back in the director's chair (he was already onboard as the producer and screenwriter). Just where the cash-strapped MGM got their stash is anyone's guess.

Interestingly, the labor issues with New Zealand remain unresolved and both studios are still holding back on officially announcing the greenlight until everything's settled. Were they to opt to back out and head elsewhere (plenty of other countries have made offers, and frankly the Kiwis would be fucking retarded if they don't find common-ground with Jackson and the studios), a further delay from the now-projected February start would occur. As of this moment, they're still gunning for December 2012 (the 19th to be exact), but again I remain skeptical. We've heard this before.

But if they pull it off (I still think it'd be a surpise if it isn't delayed another year), Warner Brothers would officially own the month of December that year with both The Hobbit – Part I and Superman: The Man of Steel. Maybe this means we'll finally get shit going on something I'm far more interested in – the third James Bond installment with Daniel Craig.

And because there's always room for casting rumblings, Heat Vision states Martin Freeman is "expected" to headline as Bilbo Baggins with "TOLDJA" adding he'll "soon be set" for the role. Funny, 'cause just last week he let the cat out of the bag those tabloid reportings of his having to turn down an offer were dead-on. The fact that he even confessed of his candidacy didn't suggest he was still in the running.

While they're on the subject, the latter also adds Michael Fassbender, Jimmy Nesbitt and David Tennant (ironic considering he was a rumored Bilbo candidate at one time) have been offered unspecified roles along with the returning Sir Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis.

James Cameron Considering 3D Cleopatra Epic

This might result in James Cameron cancelling those plane tickets to Pandora. Honestly, that Avatar follow-up sounds like a better idea than this. Yeah, go ahead and boo me! If Cameron's name wasn't linked to this, most of you wouldn't give two shits about it.

According to "TOLDJA," Cameron has had serious chats with Sony to direct a new Cleopatra film, adapted from the book Cleopatra: A Life. 3D, of course, plays a hand in this project and Angelina Jolie to star.

Word is the studio is hot to get things moving as soon as next year after Brian Helgeland handed in his script. So it sounds like if even Cameron decides otherwise (he’s already working on Avatar 2 as well as producing At the Mountains of Madness at Universal) Sony will look elsewhere.

But right now, Cameron's involvement remains on the "Maybe..." side of things.

Spider-Man Searching for Some Young-Uns

Everyone can stop biting their fingernails regarding the major casting-plays on Spider-Man. We have a new web-slinger (Andrew Garfield), a baddie (Rhys Ifans as the Lizard) and a female lead to cocktease our hero (Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey).

There are still more roles to be cast as production quickly approaches its December start like J. Jonah Jameson, Aunt May and so forth. Movie Hole says the filmmakers are in search of two youngsters – one for li'l Petey Parker and the other for Dr. Connors' boy, Billy.

There must be a flashback where he's first adopted by Uncle Ben and Aunt May since they're eyeing a 4-to-6 year old. Perhaps it's a scene where the doomed, but benevolent Unc first lectures Peter on "With great power comes great responsibly?" No clue, just thinking out loud here, kiddos.

Apparently, young Mr. Connors is a cancer survivor in the comics. Maybe he'll be the driving force behind dear old dad's mutation. AKA his search for a cure leads to a "science experiment gone horribly wrong"and thus the Lizard is born. Not that we've seen done in a Spider-Man movie before.

Oz, the Great & Powerful Skirt Chaser

From what Pajiba supplied, I could easily imagine Robert Downey Jr. in this role. On the other hand, the character gives off a Don Draper vibe.

The site has received plot details on the forthcoming Sam Raimi-directed "re-imagining" Oz, the Great & Powerful that will most likely star Downey as the title character:

"The Wizard — a snake-oil salesman posing as a magician — enter Oz via a hot-air balloon, which he uses to escape an angry husband who has found out that Oz slept with his wife. There, Oz — a fast-talking huckster who wears a velveteen frock coat (yes, I can see that) — falls in love with Glinda (the Good Witch), and the two combine forces to Fight the Evil Witches Evanora and Theodora. Theodora starts out as a good witch, but after Oz jilts her sexual advances, Evanora — the truly evil witch — convinces Theodora to become an evil witch with her and help her to rule all of Oz. Both Evanora and Theodora are described as incredibly attractive, seductive women, and Theodora likes to wear black, thigh-high boots. What is this? Oz porn?"

My thoughts exactly, Mr. Rowles. By that same token, this actually makes me want to see this now. Knowing me, I'd still see Oz even if it didn't sound like an episode of Mad Men.

The Muppets New Movie, Starring Everybody...

A Muppet News Flash (sorry, couldn't resist it):  some updates on the upcoming return of The Muppets to the big screen:  Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Amy Adams is close to a deal to star alongside Jason Segel in the new film, where she will play his character's girlfriend as they road trip to Los Angeles to find fame and fortune at Muppet Studios.

Hold on...this film involves a Muppet road trip?  Is anyone else suddenly reminded of this?

Meanwhile, Heat Vision is reporting that Chris Cooper and Rashida Jones are also in talks to star in the film, which is aiming for a November start.   The film will be loosely based on a Jim Henson story called The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made, which has the Muppets scrambling to finish their film after director Gonzo blows their entire budget on the first day of shooting.  Cooper will be playing the film's villain, while Jones will play a network executive.

The as-yet-untitled new Muppet film, which will be directed by James Bobin, is set to be released on Christmas 2011.
