Really? Another Writer for 'Ghostbusters 3'

Another day, another news story about the development hell that is Ghostbusters 3.

Word comes today that Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, MIB 3) - not to be confused with Ethan Cohen of the Cohen Bros. - has come aboard to do a rewrite for the the long, long, long in-development three-quel to the 1984 original classic.

This comes hot on the heels of Dan Aykroyd's comments last week that a new writer was being brought on to re-work the script, which has previously been drafted by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky of TV's The Office.

I'm all for doing something right, but common at this point.  This film has been in the writing process for well over a decade now, maybe more than that.  Obviously there's a bigger issue here *cough..Bill Murray..cough* then just the script.  And really, if this thing doesn't turn out at least half as good as the original (it'll be lucky enough to get made by now), then all that hard work for rewrites and such will have been for nothing.

Oh and for those who have been living under a rock for the past 10 years and not know the premise of the film, Ghostbusters 3 is expected to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson handing off the torch to a new generation.

Superman Will Fly in Three Dimensions in The Man of Steel

No way Warner Brothers, who want to make as much money as possible on their high-profile Superman cinematic revival, would risk not adding the extra pay bump to see Henry Cavill throw a super-swing or Michael Shannon's Frankenstein exterior (Great actor and I'm sure a great guy but come on, he looks creepy!) in three dimensions.

Yep, The Man of Steel will be in 3D reports the official IMAX site.

The studio already has their justification. The jaw-dropping receipts of The Avengers and the good-but-not-great grosses of The Amazing Spider-Man this past week. Zack Snyder might hate 3D (God love em), but this wasn't his call to make.

Gary Mitchell Might Be Star Trek 2 Villain After All

Karl Urban knows the art of the mystery-box all too well having lived that ideology during the production of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek in addition to Dredd and Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Could the Kiwi genre fave-turned-DeForest Kelley impersonator really slip such a big secret?

Speaking to SFX, Urban (potentially) let the cat out of the bag on what villain Benedict Cumberbatch will be shit-stirring aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise for Star Trek 2 next May:

"He's awesome, he's a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary."

In the second pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before, Mitchell is an old pal of Captain Kirk's given god-like powers and subsequently loses his mind. It doesn't end well.

Encouraging choice if true, harkening back to the original series and paving a new direction for an old character we haven't heard from since 1966. Certainly gives Chris Pine's Kirk a character-arc since his Hero's Journey is complete; having graduated to the iconic yellow-uniform in Trek's closing moments.

He was also on the short-list of baddies Badass Digest leaked back in 2010. On the other hand, co-screenwriter/producer Roberto Orci recently listed Mitchell as one of five characters not to appear as per JoBlo. Someone is blowing smoke and Abrams has learned the ways of Christopher Nolan sending out fake "spoilers" to throw us off.

Weekend Box Office: July 6-8

Courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

1.  The Amazing Spider-Man - $65 million

2.  Ted - $32.5 million

3.  Brave - $20.1 million

4.  Savages - $16.1 million

5.  Magic Mike - $15.6 million

6.  Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection - $10.2 million

7.  Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted - $7.7 million

8.  Katy Perry: Part of Me - $7.1 million

9.  Moonrise Kingdom - $4.6 million

10.  To Rome With Love - $3.5 million

As expected, The Amazing Spider-Man easily took the top spot for the holiday weekend.  Also as expected, it didn't soar quite as high as the previous Sam Raimi-era Spider-Man films, even with the benefit of 3D...which probably makes this week's box office run look better than it actually is.  Nevertheless, it did perform well.  Since opening last Tuesday to get a jump start on the July 4th holiday weekend, the new Spidey has earned $140 million domesticallly so far, with an additional $201 million from overseas markets.  So it should enjoy a decent run.  At least for now, since a certain Caped Crusader happens to be waiting in the wings.

Still enjoying a terrific box office run is Ted, which crossed the $100 million mark this weekend with $32.5 million.  People love swearing teddy bears.  Who knew?

Pixar's Brave kept the family audiences busy, earning $20.1 million.  It's likely to pass the $200 million mark before it's finished at theaters, but it will face some heavy competition when Ice Age 4 opens next weekend.

The other new releases didn't make too much noise this weekend, although with $16.1 million, Savages was the least-disasterous opening for poor Taylor Kitsch this year.  And it was a far better opening than Katy Perry's concert movie, which went almost unnoticed with just $7.1 million.

In still mostly-limited release, Moonrise Kingdom earned another $4.6 million this weekend, while Woody Allen's To Rome With Love made its top ten debut with $3.4 million.  Another limited release, Fox's Beasts of the Southern Wild, is also playing very well - earning $376,000 in just 19 theaters nationwide.

There seems to be a calm-before-the-storm vibe coming from the box office, as the rest of the summer's releases are trying to stay the hell away from The Dark Knight Rises, which opens in less than two weeks now, but next week we do have a surefire hit coming as Ice Age: Continental Drift opens in theaters.

And as you can see, they're well aware of their proximity to Batman:

13-Minute TV Special for 'The Dark Knight Rises'

I'm not sure what channel or program this is for but Warner Bros. has released a pretty detailed behind-the-scenes look at a little indie film called The Dark Knight Rises.

Nothing seems too spoiler-ish about this movie from the footage shown but it definitely gives those few interested in seeing it a great idea of what to look forward to:

Had to look this one up but apparently the film opens in less than two weeks, July 20th.

Hmm...seems they have quite a cast too.

Oh and for those who haven't realized it by now, I'm being sarcastic.

New ED-209 Revealed And A Glimpse OF Robocop

The website omnicorp.com has given us the first look at ED-209 from the Robocop remake, as well as a peak at Robocop himself. The site is set up as if it is the official site for the corporation in the movie that makes weapons to keep our cities safe, and even features a products video.

Personally I love the modernized ED-209, it's a sleek and recognizable update, and Robocop himself looks as if he will be pretty sleek for the bit we can see.

Teaser Poster For Pacific Rim

Guilermo Del Toro's Mechs vs Monsters blockbuster is picking up steam and who knows what else might be revealed at SDCC over the coming week.

Today saw Warner Brothers release a new teaser poster which gives a glimpse at the Mechs, known as Jaegers apparently. As you can see they are going to be huge and kind of look like giant Master Chief's rather than what I was expecting, i.e something like the things in the Matrix Revolutions.

A New Poster For The Hobbit

Peter Jackson dropped this via Comic Con and I think it's perfect, I can hear the Shire theme just looking at it and it captures the tranquility before the adventure, just like the start of FOTR.

Three New Images From The Dark Knight Rises

Not long now folks, arguably the most anticipated movie of the summer is almost upon us and Warner Brothers has released three new images of the central characters!

I'm still surprised at the high-tech Newmar design Nolan went for with Catwoman but I think it has turned out well, and from the footage shown so far Anne Hathaway seems to have nailed the character.

New "Rise of the Guardians" Trailer

Wow, it's like The Avengers...with fairy tale characters!  Sort of.  At least it looks good enough that it might even be worth shelling out the extra cash for the 3D version.  Heat Vision has the second trailer for Rise of the Guardians, which teams up legendary characters including Santa Claus, Jack Frost, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Sandman against a common enemy called Pitch, who looks to bring all kinds of misery and scariness to the children our heroes take care of.

This new trailer centers on Jack Frost (voiced by Chris Pine), who was suspiciously absent from the first trailer, and he seems to be a rather important member of the team:

This looks really cool.  I was a big fan of How to Train Your Dragon - I actually saw it in 3D, then went back the next night to see it again in IMAX/3D - so if this is anywhere as good as that movie was, I think we're in for a treat.

Rise of the Guardians opens in theaters on November 21.
